A cute Japanese girl Nechi-chan guided me around Asakusa by rickshaw😊 | Tokyo Asakusa

She: We’re off. Tokyo Rickshaw staff: Good luck. She: Please watch your step. And please wait a moment. She: Okay, please ride a rickshaw. Me: Thank you. She: Good. She: It’s cold today with the wind blowing so hard. Me: Yeah, it’s cold today.

Me: Have you ever come to Asakusa for New New Year’s day? She: Actually, this is my first time to spend New Year’s day in Asakusa. Me: Oh, I see. She: I’m excited. Me: I think Asakusa will be very crowded today. She: Yeah, I agree.

She: Is the seat belt tight? Me: It’s all right. Thank you. She: I’m excited about the start of a new year. Me: Yeah. She: And, I hear that today is a very good day in terms of Feng Shui. Me: Oh, I see.

She: It’s rare that this lucky day coincides with New Year’s Day. Me: Wow, today is a very auspicious day. She: Okay, it’s all set. Me: Thank you. She: Okay, I’ll lift it up. She: Please lean back. Okay, 1, 2, 3. She: Please sit back comfortably. Me: Okay.

She: We’re off! Tokyo Rickshaw staff: Good luck! Me: Viewers, it’s now the morning of January 1. She: New Year’s Day morning! Me: Oh, I find Mii-chan. Mii-chan: Good luck. She: I’ll do my best. Me: Happy New Year. She: This is my first run in 2024. Me: Oh, I see.

She: The traffic light will soon turn green, so I will introduce myself after crossing over there. Me: Okay. Thank you. She: It’s a nice day today, so you can see the Sky Tree clearly. Me: Yeah, it’s a nice day. She: Yeah, so I’m happy.

She: The year 2024 has a nice start. Me: Yeah. Me: There are a lot of police officers in city today. She: Yeah. Me: After about one hour, the main street will be blocked off by the police and closed to cars.

She: That’s right. The police will be busy now because the main street will soon be a pedestrian zone. She: Lots of rickshaws have been running since early this morning. Me: Oh, you’re right. She: Okay, we will stop here where we can see the Asahi Beer building. Me: Yeah. She: I’ll introduce myself.

She: I’m Ayane Takahashi. I will be your driver today. Me: Thank you. She: My real name is long, so please call me “Nechi”. Me: Nechi-chan? She: Yeah. This comes from the nickname “Ayanecchi”. She: I’ll do my best today. Me: Thank you.

She: Now there is a first sunrise of the year in the sky. Me: Oh, yeah. She: It’s a great morning. Me: Wow. She: The sun is shining. Me: Yeah. She: The sun seems to be blessing the beginning of the new year. She: The headquarters of Asahi Beer can be seen over there.

Me: Yeah. She: I guess that building has appeared in many of your videos. Me: Ah, yeah. She: That building on the left. Don’t you think the golden building with the jagged object on it looks like something? Me: That building looks like a beer. She: Yeah, nice answer.

She: Did you drink beer during the year-end holidays? Me: Yeah, I had it yesterday. She: That’s good. It’s great to drink alcohol on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Holidays. Me: Yeah. She: Can you see the object next to the Asahi Beer building? Me: Yeah.

She: That object has also appeared many times in your videos, so you probably already know what that thing is. She: That gold object is a flame object that expresses the passion of Asahi Beer employees. Me: Yeah.

She: The color of that building is gold, and my hair color is gold too. You might have golden luck this year, you know. Me: It’s rare to find a rickshaw driver with hair color like yours. She: That’s right. Among Asakusa’s rickshaw drivers, Gump Suzuki had this hair color not long ago.

She: But he recently changed his hair color, so I’m the only blonde hair rickshaw driver in Asakusa. Me: Wow. She: It’s a prominent color. Me: Yeah. Me: When did you make your debut as a rickshaw driver? She: I made my debut as a rickshaw driver last year around Christmas.

Me: About one week ago? She: Yeah. Me: Oh, I see. She: I did my best to make my debut before the year was out. Me: That’s great. Me: Is this rickshaw driver job your main job? She: Yeah. I’m currently only doing this rickshaw driver job.

Me: So, do you come to work more often during the week? She: Yeah, I come to work a lot. She: I’m one of the most often coming to work girl drivers. Me: Wow. Me: So, if a viewer went to the rickshaw stop of Tokyo Rickshaw, they have the chances of seeing you?

She: Yeah, I think your viewers would probably be able to meet me. Me: Viewers, if you have a chance to come to Japan, please take a ride on her rickshaw. She: Yeah, I’ll be waiting. Me: By the way, can you guide foreign customers in English?

She: Well… I use only passion to guide for my foreign customers. She: I’m currently learning how to guide using English. Me: Oh, I see. Me: You are energetic and easy to talk to, so foreign customers are sure to enjoy your rickshaw. She: Yeah, I smile all the time.

She: These days, translator app make it possible to guide foreign customers without problems. Me: It’s helpful. She: Yeah. Me: Do you have a favorite restaurant in Asakusa? She: Let’s see…, I like tempura. She: I originally liked tempura. And the first tempura I had in Asakusa was so delicious.

She: Tempura in Asakusa is so delicious at every restaurant that it is difficult to choose one favorite. Me: Yeah. She: The freshly deep-fried tempura at Asakusa’s tempura restaurant is the best. Me: Yeah. She: I especially like “Akimitsu” restaurant because it was the first place I ate tempura in Asakusa. Me: Oh, I see.

Me: What is your favorite tempura ingredient? She: Well… I like “sand borers”.(=a fish that japanese people commonly eat.) Me: You like sand borer? Wow you’re an adult. She: I like white fish. Me: You like white fish. She: Yeah. Me: Oh, we can see the Sky Tree clearly today.

Me: Did you have any difficulties during your training period? She: When I was a trainee, it was very difficult to go up the slopes. Me: Oh, I see. Me: There are many slopes around the bridge, aren’t there? She: Yeah, so I practiced going up slopes around the Azuma bridge many times.

Me: That was tough. She: Yeah, I remember the practice in Azuma bridge very well. She: I increased my work days and practiced every day. She: I practiced every day until I reached the limit of my physical strength. Me: Did you have any exercise experience? She: Yeah, I used to do rhythmic gymnastics.

Me: You did rhythmic gymnastics? She: Yeah, for a long time. Me: Where are our destination for today? She: We are going to “Matsuchiyama Shoden”. Me: Yeah. She: Next to that we’ll go to Imado Shrine. This is the New Year’s “Hatsumoude(=The first shrine/temple visit of the year)” course. Me: Thank you.

Me: During the New Year’s holidays, tourists often go to shrines and temples in hopes of finding good luck. Me: I’m sure you guide a lot of rickshaw customers to Matsuchiyama Shoden during this holidays? She: Yeah, a lot.

She: Usually we often take customers who want to go to Sensoji Temple to places such as nearby Asakusa Shrine, which is located near the temple. She: But during the New Year’s holidays, tourists are not allowed to enter Senso-ji Temple through any entrance other than the Kaminarimon gate.

She: So, we guide tourists who want to visit shrines and temples to the Matsuchiyama Shoden and the Imado Shrine. She: Sometimes we will guide our customers to the shrines and temples of the Seven Lucky Gods Tour. Yoshiwara Shrine, Hashiba Fudoson, Ishihama Shrine, etc. She: I hear that.

She: I have not yet guided customers to those places because it’s my first time working at New Year’s holidays. Me: You debuted at the busiest time of the year. She: You’re right. She: The male driver who was training with me also made his debut yesterday. Me: Wow.

She: We are trying to do our best this New Year’s holidays. She: It will shake a little. Me: Okay. She: Okay. Me: Do you enjoy this job? She: Yeah, I enjoy very much. She: But I feel I need to be more physical.

She: Actually, I never liked to exercise much, so I had never done much running. She: I run a lot in this job and sometimes my stamina is not enough. Me: Why did you start this job? She: I used to work in the hospitality service industry.

She: It’s a theme park with a famous mouse character. Me: Ah, I understand where you are talking about. She: I worked there for a long time. Me: Oh, I see. She: Later, I took another job. But I wanted to do work that entertained people.

She: Because I had found it rewarding when I worked at Disney. Me: Oh, you said “Disney”. She: Oh, I’ve said it. She: So I wanted to get another job again that entertained people. She: Then I looked for a job on a job search site. She: I found a rickshaw job on that website.

She: I became very interested in this job. She: It’ll shake a little. Me: Okay. Me: Now I understand why you started this job. She: Yeah. She: Okay, we have arrived at the Matsuchiyama Shoden. Me: Thank you. She: I’ll put down it. 1, 2, 3… Me: Thank you. She: Okay, let’s go. Me: Yeah.

She: The Daikon(Japanese radish) Festival is held here on January 7. She: Have you heard of Furofuki Daikon? Oh, watch your step. Me: Yeah. She: This temple is closely related to Daikon radish.

She: At this temple, worshippers can offer Daikon radishes to the temple. At the Daikon Festival, “Furofuki Daikon” is cooked with those Daikon radishes. Me: Wow. She: I would like to eat it. She: Well, let’s take a bow here. Me: This gate was renovationed, right? She: Yeah, the gate was renovationed.

Me: Oh, there are a lot of worshippers here today. She: Yeah. She: Please take a look here. This one has probably appeared many times in your videos too. She: This is a Daikon radish. She: These two Daikon radishes represent a human couple.

She: Because of the intersection of these two Daikon radishes, this temple has the blessing of happy marriage. She: This is a drawstring bag here. It’s an old Japanese wallet. She: This wallet is tied with a string, meaning that money cannot leave the wallet. Therefore, it’s a blessing for money.

She: There are many Daikon radish and drawstring bag designs in this temple grounds. She: That incense burner also has a drawstring bag design. She: This temple is cute, full of Daikon radishes and drawstring bags. Me: Yeah. She: This lantern also depicts a drawstring bag.

She: Look, that one is also in the shape of a drawstring bag. She: It’s said that the smoke from this incense burner purifies the body. So, you should put lots of smoke on your body. Me: Oh, thank you.

She: I would like to bring the blessings of this smoke to the viewers as well. She: Your body has now been purified. Me: Oh, it’s unusual for this hall to be open. She: Yeah, it must be because today is New Year’s days.

Me: It writtend that a “Hounou Kagura(sacred music and dance)” performance will be held today. She: Wow, I want to see it. She: This is the first time I have seen this hall open. Me: Yeah. Me: It looks little crowded in front of the temple’s main hall. She: Yeah.

She: I heard that it will be more crowded today. There are long lines to visit the temple, I heard. She: So, now is the good time. Me: I think worshiping on New Year’s Day is better to be done early in the morning. She: Yeah.

She: Even on New Year’s Day, if it is early in the morning, many shrines and temples, including Sensoji Temple, will not be too crowded. She: And it’s also easier to ride a rickshaw in the early morning. Me: Yeah. Me: Thank you. She: Yeah. She: Please watch your step. Me: Yeah.

She: In temples, do not clap your hands and worship quietly. Me: Yeah. She: Usually there is a temple gong over there that worshippers can ring. She: But today it is removed, so worshippers must worship quietly. Me: Yeah. She: On days when the temple’s gongs are in place, worshippers are free to ring them.

She: Please watch your step again. Me: Thank you. She: All the leaves of the ginkgo trees in the precinct have fallen and there is a winter atmosphere. Me: Yeah. She: I’ll show you where you can get a good view of the Sky Tree. She: This is “Jouju Bridge”.

She: Wow, two shots of the morning sun and the Sky Tree. She: Backlit, is shot okay? Me: Yeah, I’ll try to move a little. She: The first sunrise is blessing us. Today we are stars. She: From here you can enjoy the view of the temple’s plants and the pond.

She: I can’t find the carp. Me: I see some carp at the far end of the pond. She: Oh, yeah. There is also a golden carp. That’s a good luck. She: There is only one golden carp in this pond. She: So it’s lucky to find golden carp here.

Me: Only one golden carp? She: Yeah. She: So we are very lucky today. She: The view of this garden and the Sky Tree is great. Me: Yeah, the view from here is great. She: This is the best photo spot.

She: It is said that if you make a wish again when you walk on this bridge, what you prayed at the temple’s main hall, you will receive more blessings. She: If you want to receive more blessings at this temple, I recommend you should come to this bridge as well. Me: Yeah.

She: This garden is planted with a variety of plants, so worshippers can enjoy beautiful scenery in every season. Me: Your guide is good. She: Oh, really? Thank you. She: I’m sure many of my coworkers’ drivers will be here today with their customers.

She: Soon this area will be lively with worshippers and rickshaw drivers. She: Oh, it’s “Amazake(=sweet drink made from fermented rice)”. Me: Is Amazake a Japanese drink? She: Yeah. I was never a fan of Amazake in the first place. Do you like it? Me: Yeah, I like it.

She: Amazake is called the IV drip to drink because it is high in nutrition. She: So it’s good that you like Amazake. Me: Oh, there are many rickshaws. She: Yeah, it’s time to get crowded.

Me: So many worshippers come on New Year’s Day to visit the temple on a rickshaw? She: Yeah, they are. She: Then, please wait a moment. Me: Yeah. She: Okay. Me: Thank you. She: Please watch your step and ride. Me: Thank you. She: I’ll put a blanket on you again. Me: Thank you.

Me: Your nail art looks nice. She: Oh, thank you. She: My blonde hair and flashy nails make me look like a gal. She: But my personality is not a gal. Me: As you say, you look like a gal. Me: Some foreign viewers may not know the meaning of gal in Japan.

She: Japanese gal. Me: It is difficult to explain Japanese gal culture to foreign viewers. She: Yeah. She: Japanese gals are girls with flashy makeup and high spirits. Me: You’re right. She: They are fond of saying “AGE”. She: I’m a serious person, unlike the Japanese gals. She: We will move forward slowly.

She: It’ll shake a little. Me: Yeah. She: Oh, there is a rickshaw parked over there, too. Me: Oh, it’s true. Me: Your hair ribbon looks nice. She: Thank you. I dressed up today. She: I usually wear a scrunchie. But today I wear a ribbon. She: I made my back look cute. Me: Yeah.

Me: Do you work every day during the New Year’s holidays? She: Yeah. She: Everyday. She: I’ll take care of myself and do my best every day. Me: Could you explain to an foreign viewer how the Japanese spend New Year’s holidays? She: There are several ways for Japanese people to spend New Year’s holidays.

She: One is to go out of the house and spend time going to Hatsumode (New Year’s visit to a shrine) or Hatsu-uri (New Year’s sales). She: At the first sales in Japan, products called Fukubukuro(=grab bag) are sold. During this holidays, things are sold at a discount.

She: This is an active way to spend New Year’s holidays. She: Another way to spend the time is to stay home. During the New Year’s holidays, TV programs that are different from the usual are aired, so people enjoy them. She: Spending New Year’s holidays without leaving the house is called “Neshogatsu”. Me: Yeah.

She: These two are typical examples of how Japanese people spend New Year’s holidays. Me: Yeah, some people stay home to relax and others go out to be active. She: Yeah, which one are you? Me: Since I started YouTube, I have been going out for New Year’s holidays. She: Oh, you’re active. Me: Yeah.

She: Go for a Hatsumode or some shopping? Me: The atmosphere of the town is different from usual during New Year’s holidays, so I sometimes go there to take photos and videos. She: That’s good. She: Do you shoot anything other than rickshaws?

Me: Yeah, I sometimes film other things than rickshaws. But I only publish rickshaw videos on my YouTube. She: Oh, I see. Me: We arrived. She: Oh, shrines are decorated with New Year’s holidays. Me: Yeah. She: Today, rickshaws are not allowed to enter through this entrance. We will use the other entrance. Me: Okay.

She: It’ll shake a little. Me: Yeah. Me: This is the first time to enter from here. She: There is a trick to passing through here. She: Okay. Me: Wow. She: Today we entered the shrine grounds through a different entrance than usual. Oh, it’ll shake a little again.

She: Oh, there are many worshippers. Me: Yeah, there’s a line. She: I’ll park the rickshaw here. Me: Yeah, thank you. She: I’ll put it down. Me: Yeah. She: Okay. Me: We find “Nami-chan”, the mascot cat of this shrine. She: Yeah. Me: Let’s get a little closer to that cat. She: Wow. She: Hi.

She: Hi, Happy New Year. She: This cat looks sleepy. Me: Yeah. She: This cat may have been busy on the New Year’s Eve. Worshipper: Hi, Nami. She: Nami-chan looks very sleepy today. She&Me: Cute. She: Thank you. She: So cute. Me: Yeah.

Me: This may have the first time I was able to meet Nami-chan during the shooting. She: Oh, really? She: Wow, we are lucky today. She: I’m sure good things will happen for all the viewers watching this videos too. She: Wow. She: Let’s be happy together. She: I will introduce the Ema. Me: Yeah.

She: Here is another cat. Me: These ema are cute. She: Yeah. She: Ema are generally pentagonal in shape, but these ema are round shape. She: The round shape is called “en” in Japanese. Also, to be married to a lover in Japanese is also called “en”.

She: If you have a lover, you will have a good result if you worship at this shrine. She: Couples who got a good results come to write their thanks on an Ema with a clothed cat on it.

She: Because the Japanese pronunciation of “Fuku ga kita(got lucky)” and the Japanese pronunciation of “Fuku ga kita(clothed)” are the same. She: The Ema of this shrine is very unique. She: It’s crowded today, so let’s worship next to the shrine’s main hall. Me: Okay. She: It takes time to worship today.

Me: There is a line of worshippers, so today we will do a quick worship. She: We will worship next to the shrine’s main hall. She: The names of these two cats are Nami and Nagi. Me: Oh, I see. She: It is the same name as the cat we met earlier.

She: This name is derived from “Izanagi no Mikoto” and “Izanami no Mikoto”, the deities of this shrine. She: It is said that if you pat the head of this cat, your wish will come true. She: It is as beneficial as worshipping at the shrine’s main hall.

Me: Cat’s head is changing color. She: Yeah, because a lot of worshippers touched it. She: Worshippers who wanted to marry their lovers patted many of here, which is why it changed color. She: If you worshipping here, you will receive the same blessings as when worshipping at the shrine’s main hall.

She: I recommend that worshippers who do not have time to wait in line to worship from here. Me: Yeah. She: When worshipping, please give 2 bows, 2 claps, and 1 bow. She: Is it okay if we don’t go over there? Me: Yeah, it’s crowded today, so let’s go back to the rickshaw.

Me: Okay, we’ll end today’s shoot here. She: Thank you. Me: Thank you too. Me:I’ll come back for a ride. She: Yeah, let’s enjoy rickshaws together again. Me: Viewers, please come and ride her rickshaw. She: Yeah, I’ll be waiting. Me: See you again. She: Thank you.

Nechi-chan is a rickshaw driver who made her debut end of last year.
She is a blonde girl rickshaw driver, which is rare in Asakusa.
This time, Nechi and I went to Asakusa on New Year’s Day for Hatsumode.😊

  1. こんばんは!今回は東京電力のねちちんの人力車に乗ったんですね。僕も来月末に東京に引っ越すのでおちついたら久しぶりに東京力車の人力車乗りに行きたいです。

  2. She is a new, very simple, intelligent and talented wow girl.
Thank you for this awesome video

  3. riding by Nechi-chan feels like she doing it for long time, all perfectly explained. this video was really great to watch, hopefully soon again a ride with her

  4. Thank you. I was glad to see you didn't have snow to travel in. Have you ever asked the rickshaw drivers if they've had to work under snowy conditions? I think already being an athlete for Nechi was a benefit, but you probably use different muscles. I hope both of you have a good week. Take care.

  5. GTJT, would a JLPT N4 or N5 level of Japanese proficiency (at best I'm N4 at worst N5) be enough to communicate with the rickshaw drivers because I don't want to trouble them to try to speak in English for me. I've seen videos of some of them (rickshaw girls) struggle a bit in communicating in English, so I might as well make the adjustment and not the rickshaw girls.

  6. Thanks for the uploud ! I think Nechi chan is a very cute and fun richshaw driver!
