Welcome to Positano, one of the most spectacular places in southern Italy. In this video, we’ll take you on a virtual tour of Positano. Join us on a captivating evening walking tour as we meander through the streets and hidden gems of this coastal village.
Positano – a destination that attracts with its coastal beauty, cultural richness, and an undeniable sense of Mediterranean magic. The ancient Romans built a number of sumptuous villas on the coast of Positano, the ruins of which can be seen in the vicinity of the Church dell’Assunta.
It is believed that the town was founded in the 9th century around a Benedictine abbey. The town grew considerably following the arrival of inhabitants from Paestum, who were fleeing Saracen incursions. The fortunes of Positano, like its roads, have continually risen and fallen. In 1343 the town was destroyed by a terrible tsunami,
And in the 15th century it was victim to continual attacks by Ottoman pirates. In the 18th century, Positano enjoyed a period of prosperity as a major port and trading hub. Following the unification of Italy and the opening of a number of new commercial routes, the town’s importance began to decline.
In just a few decades it was reduced to little more than a humble fishing village, and many of the inhabitants decided to emigrate to the United States. Positano once more began to flourish with the construction of the SS163 road.
The new road united the town with Sorrento and Naples and allowed the first tourists to reach Positano. These were no ordinary tourists, but rather an elite group of travelers comprised of intellectuals, artists, and celebrities who, from the early 20th century onwards, elected Positano and Ravello as their preferred holiday resorts.
Positano is the first town you reach on the Amalfi Coast when arriving from Naples, and it’s about a 20-minute drive from the Sorrentine Peninsula and about 30 minutes from Capri by ferry. After Positano, the next towns are Praiano, Conca de’ Marini, Amalfi, and the other villages along the coast.
Positano is perfect for couples, with its romantic atmosphere and leisurely days on the beaches: Fornillo, Arienzo, Laurito, or Spiaggia Grande. There are great cafés and restaurants and you can also take a boat tour to admire the Li Galli Islets, Capri, and the surrounding coastline.

Which houses the Byzantine Madonna Nera that is the object of much devotion among locals. This historic icon was found on the beach after a violent storm and on that site, the church was built. Spiaggia Grande is the heart of Positano’s waterfront.
Spanning 300 meters, this beach is one of the largest on the Amalfi Coast, as well as one of the most glamorous, attracting a fashionable crowd of artists, actors, and celebrities. In summer the beach is the meeting point for nightlife: bars, restaurants and
Summer events offer different alternatives to spend an unforgettable evening in the vertical city. Take a dip in the crystalline waters off the coast, admire the dramatic cliffs by sea on a mini-cruise, relax over a romantic dinner overlooking the water. Positano is built on two steep hills.
Walking through Positano is like getting a stairclimber workout. Since the shops, restaurants, and hotels are all built on these hills, you will walk up and down quite a few hills and staircases. Positano is a wonderful place to visit from mid-April through the end of October.
June, July, August, and September are the busiest months, with peak season being July and August. The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast is mid-April through May and mid-September through October. Crowds are lower and the weather is fantastic. Sunsets are gorgeous in Positano, as the setting sun bathes the town in
Warm hues of gold, orange, and pink, that complement the colors of the buildings. One of the best places to watch the sunset is from a rooftop bar but you can also do so from the beach, one of the viewpoints in town, or your hotel.
One of the best “free” spots in town to get a good sunset view of Positano is on Via Cristoforo Colombo. Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for more captivating content in our next video. Until then, take care and keep exploring!

Positano stands as the crown jewel of the Amalfi Coast, a captivating stretch of coastline kissed by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea and cradled by the peaks of the Lattari Mountains. This UNESCO World Heritage Site unfolds for 37 miles (60 kilometres) between Naples and Salerno in the Campania region of southern Italy, featuring equally picturesque towns like Amalfi and Ravello.
Immerse yourself in the crystalline waters, embark on a mini-cruise to marvel at the dramatic cliffs, savour a romantic dinner with a sea view, and wander through narrow lanes shaded by wisteria and lemon trees. Located approximately 20 minutes from the Sorrentine Peninsula and a half-hour ferry ride from Capri, Positano is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. The coastal journey continues through Praiano, Conca de’ Marini, Amalfi, and other enchanting villages.
Transportation options abound, with buses connecting Positano to Sorrento or Amalfi, featuring stops at “La Sponda” and “Chiesa Nuova.” Additionally, summer ferries operate from Sorrento and Capri, adding a scenic maritime dimension to the journey.
Perched on the slopes of Monte Comune, Positano’s vertical landscape is a marvel to behold, with houses seemingly stacked atop the other. The village, adorned with citrus gardens and palm trees, unfolds like a masterpiece.
Exploring Positano demands courage and comfortable footwear, as its intricate network of stairs and sloping lanes challenges visitors. Despite the close-knit, towering houses, Positano’s charm is undeniable, drawing crowds of tourists and inspiring artists to create amidst its scenic beauty.
Once a thriving fishing village in the 16th and 17th centuries, Positano witnessed a shift as its inhabitants sought new horizons in the United States. Tourism emerged as the mainstay in the mid-20th century, transforming the village’s fortunes. However, the influx of affluent tourists brought about a price surge, unsettling the local residents.
On the quaint “Piazzetta des Moulins,” the village square, the church is a focal point steeped in the legend of the Madonna. Intertwined with its stunning coastal landscape, Positano’s history creates a tapestry of contrasts, where tradition meets the influx of modernity through tourism.
