32 HOMBRES y 1 MUJER perdidos en una isla – La Reina de Anatahan | Viajando se Aprende – JL Pastor
Today we know Japan for its technology, for its reputation for tireless workers and for cities like Tokyo that seem straight out of a science fiction movie that contrast with the more traditional towns like Ishikawa Go, for example, not to mention all the pop culture and
Audiovisual that we consume from that country throughout the world. but this Japan that is familiar to us today was very different until the end of the Second World War, when the Japanese army was not only feared, but was considered one of the most bloodthirsty and cruel in the world,
A very delicate subject to deal with. Japanese. Regarding this, on our trip to Japan we were told the story of Hiro Onoda, a Japanese soldier in the Philippines who did not know that the war was over and who only surrendered when they found him in 1974, 30 years after it
Had ended. that conflict. but what we did not know is that this story was going to lead us to another even stranger one related to that topic, because it turns out that 30 Japanese soldiers stranded on a tiny volcanic island, also unaware that the war had ended – the same Second
World War – They fought a deadly competition for the only woman left on the island. They called her the queen bee and men were willing to fight and kill for her. Today when traveling you learn I will tell you the story of the Queen of Anatahan [Music]. Anatahan is
A small volcanic island located in the Northern Mariana Islands, which is a group of remote islands between Hawaii and the Philippines and is the setting for this story as well. Characterized by its lush tropical forests during World War II, this island, only 32
Km in circumference and unknown to many, became a refuge for a group of Japanese soldiers. The story begins with a shipwreck in June 1944. A Japanese convoy was destroyed by the Allied forces in the middle of its journey. The survivors, 30 Japanese
Soldiers and sailors, swam tirelessly and found refuge in Anatahan. They didn’t know that the war was about to end in a few months in 1945, but their Odyssey was just beginning. It must be clarified that at the time of the shipwreck the Island was not deserted,
Because before all this, Anatahan Island had been used by the Japanese for the production of copra, that is, coconut pulp. About 40 islanders worked on the Anatahan copra farms under Japanese supervision. Eventually the islanders abandoned Anatahan and only
A few Japanese remained. One of the few Japanese who remained on the island was a woman of Okinawan origin: Kazuki Higa, married to a man named Soichi Higa. Worried about his sister living in a war zone, Shoichi left Kazuko in Anatahan while he went to Saipan
To check on his sister. but he never returned. Kazuko then went on to live with another man also named Giga, named Cuikichiro. The fact is that suddenly, Kazuko became the only woman upon the arrival of these 30 castaways. The horror scenario was then set and began
Almost immediately when the sudden and accidental deaths of several people occurred. First, a Mysterious explosion killed several of the men on the Island. Mysterious because none of the Japanese died, but the islanders who were already there and Kazuko’s husband did. Later, this explosion was attributed to a non-war munition. detonated but that seems
More like the first of several lies that were speculated because another version, more credible and confessed after the fact, says that his romantic partner Cuikichiro was shot dead by the Japanese soldier Gaburu Yoshiro. This was the beginning of what is idealized in many
Narratives as the reign of Kasuko as if she were the queen of Anatahan, but which in reality was a fight for the power of the island and for the affection centered on Kasuco by 30 men, attitude fueled by jealousy, desperation and the madness of loneliness. Many later chronicles
Highlight that Kazuko managed men with an incredible capacity for command and manipulation and with this they attribute a psychological aspect to the dynamics of life on this island of Anatahan. But that is still a sexist and romantic view of what happened and one can only imagine the
Terror of this woman and what she had to go through for her to be the object of desire of more than 30 men, soldiers surviving with hardships and alienated by isolation and loneliness in this small infernal society. Let us also remember that being totally isolated from the world they did not even know
That World War II had already ended with the surrender of the Japanese troops. Life in Anatahan was hard, the men built huts with the rubble and survived on coconuts – taro, which is a type of sweet potato or tuber that is called
Chinese sweet potato in some places – and fish. but the real danger came from within. Tensions would continue to rise, leading to a disturbing cycle of violence and death. one of the unidentified soldiers was killed among several for his insistent request for affection from
Kazuko. Yoshiro, the killer of the original kazuko couple was in turn stabbed to death by soldier Morio Chiba, who died a theoretically natural death. Two more men killed themselves in a duel for her attention and to avoid more fights, suffering and conflict, she “married”
In quotes several more, one of them named Ishiro Yanagibashi, he drowned in the ocean but it is doubted that it was accidental and it seems that there were also several of the men from La Isla who killed him. In total about 11 men died in Anatahan over those years, some were
Accidental and others were murdered. At this point the disputes were evidently not only about Kazuko’s love, but also about the leadership in this small colony of alienated people. In 1950, American troops massively dropped pamphlets from a plane assuring the
Survivors that the war was over and that they could leave, but the Japanese refused to surrender, thinking that they were just lies from the Americans. By that year, 1950, it is said that the men were no longer competing for Kazuko and rather they came up with the brilliant idea that if they
Eliminated her they could forgive each other, right? and meet everyone with friends. Evidently, when Kazuko learned that her life was in danger, she fled to hide on the island and apparently signaled to a passing American ship to rescue her. According to
Another version, a Japanese who worked for the American government went to Anatahan and convinced Higa to surrender, to surrender to her, and so did the rest of the men who were on the island. but on June 30, 1951 the remaining 19 Japanese finally surrendered when
The Americans dropped letters from the men’s own relatives urging them to Surrender as the war was effectively over. From then on they waved white flags when they saw the American planes. The Americans immediately sent ships to Anatahan to pick up the Japanese. World War II had finally
Ended 6 years after the fact for these Japanese soldiers. It is said that over time Kasuko returned to Okinawa where she met her first husband by chance, they became husband and wife again and if this is true, life makes things come full circle but,
Like much of this story, it seems More of a story narrative. The story of Anatahan and his queen has inspired films and books, capturing the imagination of many. The most famous adaptation that we have been illustrating part of this story with is Joseph
Von Stenberg’s 1953 film called “The Anatahan Saga” which deals with this complex story of survival, authority and human behavior in extraordinary circumstances, but It romanticizes it very much. The story of the Queen of Anatahan is much more than a story of survival, it speaks
Of the Power of isolation, the human need to have a social structure and the sometimes blurred line between reality and deception. However, after all these years and although it is a little unknown, it is still a captivating story for those of us who are interested in stories of
Dark and hidden journeys. And just as it is a curious story that we discover while traveling, there are many similar ones, like this one: in which we tell you how after a rather crazy Hungarian destroyed a Vatican treasure was a small town of Puno, in Peru, which he helped the Pope
