4K Helsinki 🇫🇮 : The Best Library In The World – How Is It Inside?

In this episode we invite you to explore Oodi – the best library in the world situated in central Helsinki. It is designed by ALA Architects and completed in 2018. Helsinki has a challenging climate so Finns attach great importance to any activity “under the roof”.

This day outside was about -18°C. So the best way of walking was entering the “covered” spaces as this one. Oodi has been built using local materials. The library intand “to promote lifelong learning, active citizenship, democracy and freedom of expression.”

It has been voted winner of the 2019 Public Library of the Year award by the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA). The middle layer of the building is filled with spruce boards 3.3 centimeters thick. This treatment can be interpreted as a nod to ancient Finnish wooden architecture

Or the local furniture-making tradition. The design divides the functions of the library into three levels. The ground floor extends the town square into an interior space. The second floor – the “Attic” – enclosed in-between volume contains rooms to accommodate additional services and facilities within the library.

The upper floor is a “book heaven”. “The upper surface of the canopy structure has been used to create a large public terrace, from which Helsinki citizens can look directly over the square to the steps and main entrance of the Finnish parliament. The terrace doubles

The amount of public outdoor space provided for library visitors and creates a new destination where people can meet and observe the city below,” – from the architects. On the other side of the park there is the Finlandia Hall a congress and event venue designed by Alvar Aalto and built in 1971.

Now the building is under renovation. Now we are walking toward the Central station of Helsinki. Do you like winter city architectural walks? See you in the next episode

In the first episode of Helsinki Walks we invite you to explore Oodi – the best library in the world situated in central Helsinki. It is designed by ALA Architects and completed in 2018. Helsinki has a challenging climate so Finns attach great importance to any activity “under the roof”. Books only fill one third of the space within the library – there are many other facilities introduced in the building including a café, restaurant, public balcony, movie theatre, audio-visual recording studios and a makerspace. Oodi has been built using local materials.
We invite you to expore this remarkable project and to visit it inside and then to take a walk in the snow towards the The Finlandia Hall designed by Alvar Aalto.
