Thank you always for watching, truly grateful. From Hong Kong to Guangzhou. Look forward to exquisite Cantonese cuisine and historic temple visits.

Departing from Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Station, a 60-minute high-speed train to Guangzhou, a city of about 15 million people. The tomb of the second king of the Nanyue Kingdom, Wen Wang, excavated in 1983, is now preserved and open to the public.

Zhao Mei, the second king of the Nanyue Kingdom, ruled the Guangzhou area during the Western Han, also known as the Former Han era. This Han Dynasty tomb, discovered unlooted, is one of the significant archaeological finds of the 1980s. In 1988, the museum was completed and opened to the public.

Many excavated burial items are on display. Tools that were used. The West Ear Chamber was a storage room for various tools and treasures. The Main Chamber, East and West Side Chambers, and Front Chamber, where the tomb owner’s coffin is placed, are also displayed. It’s evident that his realm was vast.

The golden seal of Zhao Mei, the second ruler. The tomb’s occupant was adorned with a ‘Silk-Threaded Jade Suit’ made from 2,291 jade plates, sewn with red silk. In the Han era, it was believed that wearing a jade suit preserved the body from decay.

It measures 1.73 meters – the Han people were surprisingly tall. Intriguing historical facts about the arrangement of jade pieces and the queen’s attire. Guangxiao Temple, located in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, is one of the city’s four great temples. A sudden downpour. Observing the prayer rituals of people around while taking shelter.

It seems the practice is to buy flowers, then hold hands above the head, bow three times for offerings. The renowned ‘Burial Mound Tower’ is an octagonal, seven-tiered structure. Next, the towering ‘Thousand Buddha Pagoda’ at Liurong Temple. Lotus flowers bloom breathtakingly. On prayer days, amidst intense heat, cooling mists emerge.

The ‘Flower Pagoda’, a 57m, octagonal Thousand Buddha Pagoda, is beautifully shaped. The magnificent Dafo Temple, its night view to be shown later. Shunde’s famous and historic Cantonese-style milk pudding shop, “Double Skin Milk”. The recipe is quite simple: only milk, egg whites, and sugar (without coagulants).

Creating smooth “Double Skin Milk” requires skill. Steamed twice, the name comes from the two thin skins formed. Next, a popular spot! Queueing with a number ticket at the pigeon cuisine specialty, “Big Pigeon Rice”. Many pigeons hung in front of the shop, a spectacular sight.

Traditional door god paintings adorn the staircase to the second floor in Guangdong province. Door gods are guardians of the home, a tradition to ward off evil spirits. Lanterns depicting ‘pigeons’ dance in the sky, shining in myriad colors. The open kitchen offers a panoramic view of the vivid cooking scenes.

The complimentary ‘Coconut Pudding’, containing fruits and red beans. “Red-braised Crispy Milk Pigeon” (whole fried pigeon). The lady skillfully cuts the pigeon into smaller pieces. The swift preparation of the pigeon cut. Deliciousness ready in an instant. Whole fried milk pigeon, a favorite among the Cantonese. A challenge for the brave to try it whole.

As the crispy skin breaks, pure deliciousness floods the mouth. The intense flavor of the fat is irresistible. Mapo eggplant, striking red in appearance but not spicy, rich in flavor. Stir-fried mulberry leaves, attractive for their blood sugar-lowering health benefits. Post-meal stroll around the area, bustling with cheerful youth.

Shofang Street, a retro streetscape like stepping back in time. Let’s enjoy authentic Guangzhou dim sum with Chinese tea. Visiting ‘Diandoude’, a time-honored tea house established in 1933. Spacious and luxurious interior, buzzing like a banquet. Each table is equipped with a tea set, ready for service before ordering.

Honey-glazed char siu bao, a culinary treasure registered as intangible cultural heritage. Creamy filling bursts out, caution for the heat! Egg tarts, golden and crisp, freshly served. The pastry is equally delightful. A must-try. Relish the delicious dim sum and tea, a leisurely moment. Exploring the streets post-meal, a variety of skewer shops lined up.

Every shop is lively and bustling. Beijing Road, bustling even at night, a stunning crowd scene. On Beijing Road, a building glittering like a jewel box. What could it be? Here is the prominent ‘Dafo Temple’, one of Guangzhou’s five major temples, extravagant and vibrant.

The temple, originally founded during the Southern Han Dynasty, was rebuilt in the 17th century after a fire. The beautiful Dafo Temple holds high cultural and artistic value. A place visited by numerous pilgrims annually. A must-see. At the temple’s front, worshippers come late into the night. The statue is of Maitreya Buddha.

Devotees fervently offering prayers to the Buddha, Sakyamuni. At night, the Buddha’s light shines, rivaling the city’s luminance. Located in a bustling street, surrounded by skyscrapers, a unique tower-style temple. Once visited, the magnificence of the building beckons a return. Chinese taxis, remarkably affordable! Easy city travel at wallet-friendly prices.

Gliding through skyscrapers, heading to tonight’s stay. Destination: Park Hyatt Guangzhou, a night of luxury begins. More an art gallery than a hotel, an exquisite space. The lobby on the first floor, filled with a forest-like aroma. Art by Mr. Kawamata adorns the wall, depicting a dragon ascending to the heavens.

Ascending the stairs, a beautifully woven wooden front desk awaits. Also on display, an intricate spherical wooden sculpture. Guangzhou’s iconic tower changes colors, a spectacular light show. Luxurious lighting and sofas define the hotel’s allure. Every view is Instagram-worthy, as if gazing upon a painting. A lounge corner, the ‘living room’, offering a cozy retreat.

A well-equipped gym, perfect for fitness enthusiasts. Corridors filled with calligraphy art, a cultural treasure trove. A surprise! A celebration prepared for a wedding anniversary. Touched by the thoughtful gesture, an unforgettable experience. Grateful for the hotel’s attention to detail, truly five-star service. A specially prepared vivid red cake and roses, overflowing with romance.

Welcome fruits, bananas, apples, and pears adorn the table. Beginning the customary room tour. A bathtub visible from the bedside, the epitome of luxury. Two lavish washbasins, brushing teeth together, simply delightful. The shower booth resembles a lab, with mysterious shampoo bottles. Bergamot 22 fragrance, perfectly aligning with my taste.

Soft towels and a powerful hairdryer. Everything is simple and sophisticated. What’s behind this door? A mystery! Oh, it’s the tea set and fridge. A tea set brimming with Chinese charm. A treasure trove of teabags! An abundance of tea varieties, almost too many to choose from.

Stretching out in the deep bath, relaxing in the leisurely warmth of the tub. Day two in Guangzhou, slept well. As the electric blinds rise, Before me, the early morning Guangzhou Tower. A breathtaking view. Then suddenly, a person strikes a pose, appearing amusingly.

Taxi to go! Heading to ‘Chen Clan Academy’. A journey into history begins. Built in 1888, a voyage through time. A historical building funded by the Chen family. The roof carvings of the Chen Clan Academy, intricate and colorful, embody Chinese tradition. Just inside the entrance, a grand door god painting captivates with its presence.

Comparing the height of the ceiling and the size of the god’s feet to a human hand. The door carvings are also remarkably detailed. The stone carvings, minutely detailed, showcase exquisite craftsmanship. Perhaps a story is depicted in the carvings atop the roof? Small-sized dogs, or maybe lions?

Highlights include pillars, roofs, windows, railings, and more. Vivid stone carvings, brick carvings, iron castings display various motifs of animals and ancient patterns. See numerous handicrafts and their creation process. Astonished at the skill to finish such intricate wood carvings without damaging them midway.

Foshan ceramics, historically renowned. Next trip to Foshan City will feature ceramics. Vibrant handicrafts created by living national treasures. Numerous art crafts representing the south are displayed. Truly the gems of Lingnan culture, their unique charm and historical value shine. Focusing on the details reveals a charm that makes one forget time.

After the visit, the influx of group tourists. Entering first thing in the morning was the right choice! Strolling around, searching for a lunch spot. A journey of delicious discoveries. Headed to ‘Bao Han Xiao Cha Lou’, a local favorite restaurant established in 1979. Authentic flavors found here. Chose chrysanthemum tea as per my liking.

Tea pots ready on the table, embodying the rich tea culture. 2 00:19:50,000 –> 00:19:56,000 Tea leaves swiftly rinsed with hot water, a necessary step in the ritual of tea. Next, pouring in ample hot water. Teacups also rinsed in the same manner, continuing the ceremonial practice.

The arrival of congee, a standard breakfast in China. Juicy Xiao Long Bao, brimming with flavorful broth. A Cantonese dim sum specialty, Oyster Sauce Fresh Bamboo Roll, a treat for both taste and sight. Wrapped in bean curd skin, fried, and steamed with sauce. Utmost deliciousness! A dish of beef and rice dough rolled and simmered. Savoring authentic flavors at a local restaurant, away from tourists. Yongqing Fang, an old street lined with cafes and souvenir shops, blending history and modernity. Visiting ‘Thick Cut Fried Yogurt’ shop. Choosing flavors and having them filled into a cup.

Perfect for a hot day! The coolness is refreshingly delicious. A Japanese takoyaki stall here. Wonder if the locals find it tasty? Next, the Cantonese Opera Art Museum. Surprisingly, admission is free. A museum themed on Cantonese Opera. Displays include gardens, stages, and costumes. A little girl dressing in Cantonese Opera attire.

Being photographed in the corridor, watched by her parents. Boats used by 18th-19th century Cantonese Opera troupes for touring. An 83-year-old veteran member demonstrating the skill of manipulating teeth without hands. This skill is called ‘playing with teeth’. The performer skillfully spits out and swallows fangs, a remarkable talent.

Singing and moving with fangs in nostrils, showcasing versatile performances. An extraordinary art with a history of over 100 years. Even just for the costumes, it’s a must-visit destination.
