Better than AMERICA? We find AFFORDABLE Healthcare abroad, but is it as ADVANCED? š²š¾ [SE E32]
Previously on “Two Up and Overloaded” – We cameĀ face to face with some terrifying reptiles, alongĀ Ā with some other amazing wildlife of Sarawak, EastĀ Malaysia. But our wildlife adventures that day were not over as we headed with ourĀ friend Lee to the Semonggoh Wildlife Center.Ā Ā
After getting tickets at the front, we tookĀ this little bus thing. What are those called?Ā Ā It was a golf cart… trolley. The golf cart trolley!Ā Where they put little kids on at Disneyland,Ā Ā you know? Yeah, exactly. We tookĀ one of those further into the park.
And as it came to a stop at a parking lot,Ā Ā we noticed a huge crowd of people gatheringĀ around this one corner of the parking lot.Ā Ā And we knew there had to be something going onĀ in the forest, something special in the trees. Yes.
It was an orangutan. It was super, super duperĀ awesome. Yeah. It was a pair of them. Yeah.Ā Ā That’s true. There were two of them, but thereĀ was one that was really kind of front and centerĀ Ā
Right there. And there was a guy who was tossingĀ up a kind of fruit up to the orangutan. I thinkĀ Ā it might have been jackfruit or something. It lookedĀ really, really yellow. So the orangutan actuallyĀ Ā moved down out of the tree and towards theĀ crowd of people. And the ranger was like,Ā Ā
“Get back, get back! Everybody move back!”Ā But the orangutan climbed down the tree,Ā Ā and then the orangutan went into theĀ jungle. It knew that it was about to rain. They could sense that a thunderstorm of epicĀ Ā proportions was about toĀ unleash its wrath upon us. It’s raining!
We all ran for shelter. There’s a little,Ā for lack of a better word, “shelter” that we ranĀ Ā under. And we waited for our little trolleyĀ thing to come pick us up. Golf cart trolley.Ā Ā Golf cart trolley. It was raining so hard, andĀ under the shelter, we weren’t getting wet. ButĀ Ā
Once we got into that trolley and then tryingĀ to get to the car in the parking lot, I mean,Ā Ā we just got soaked. Yeah, and when it rains,Ā it pours. Yeah, it does, though. It’s likeĀ Ā
Just a crazy thunderstorm. We were in Lee’s car,Ā and you couldn’t see 20 ft ahead of you. TrafficĀ Ā was just stopped. Crazy. We went somewhere to eatĀ and getting out of the car into the restaurant,Ā Ā which is always outdoors, you know? Well,Ā there’s no doors. They’re indoors withoutĀ Ā
Doors. You get out of the car, and you’reĀ instantly just soaked. It was raining kuchingsĀ “cats” and dogs. Wow, I think with the chicken, I haveĀ to use my fingers. You want to use finger? Yes.Ā Ā This restaurant had such good food. It had aĀ very special sauce from the Peninsular sideĀ Ā
Of Malaysia. So this was our first time eatingĀ Peninsular Malaysian food. It was from a placeĀ Ā called Kota Bharu, and it was deliciousĀ like a sauce that went over chicken andĀ rice.Ā That is so good. All right, you want toĀ taste the most delicious thing in the world? Yeah.
That’s to die for. We can’t thank Lee enoughĀ for his friendship and his kindness and forĀ Ā escorting us around Kuching. We’re glad thatĀ we now have acquired yet another lifelongĀ friend.Ā … Let everyone feel comfortable… Yeah, let’s go toĀ breakfast. Okay. Our fantastic adventures withĀ Ā Lee were far from over.
But first, weĀ had a not-so-great adventure. Because sometimesĀ Ā when your life is on the road, you need to take aĀ moment to go to the doctor. And I had a motorcycleĀ Ā injury from a fall in Indonesia that was just notĀ healing. “Are you all right? Are you all right?”Ā Ā
So before we could go anywhere else, we neededĀ to first go to a hospital. From what they could tell, it seemed like it’s notĀ healing. And that could require surgery. So… I don’t know. Hey everyone! Nice to have you here. We areĀ Tim, and Marisa Notier. I ride in the front.Ā Ā
And Iām in the rear. We travel the world andĀ we pack too much gear. Oh, all the places weāllĀ Ā go! Through rain and through sleet and throughĀ mud and through snow. Oh, all the things weāllĀ Ā
See! Weāve been to a country or two. Or three!Ā Oh, all the fun weāve had! To have you along,Ā Ā would make us real glad. So give us a like, andĀ hit subscribe to join us along our epic ride. [This episode is dedicated to our Hit the Road Patrons.]
[Join for as little as $1 a month! See link in the description below.] Okay, good morning. Today I’m going to be eatingĀ something that is considered by Anthony BourdainĀ Ā to be the Breakfast of the Gods. It is calledĀ Sarawak Laksa. Check it out. Ā Ā [Laksa Sarawak] This was actually my first time
Having one of my new favorite foods of the wholeĀ world, and it is called Laksa. To be specific,Ā Ā Laksa Sarawak. It’s made with a coconut broth thatĀ is spicy. So, this is the special Sarawak versionĀ Ā that is not like the rest of Malaysia. Let’s giveĀ it a try.
Oh, it’s good! It’s spicy, but it’sĀ Ā really good. It’s so delicious. It’s like all theĀ flavors that I love put into one. It’s almost likeĀ Ā a coconut creamy Thai curry that has shrimp andĀ very thin rice noodles and bean sprouts and otherĀ Ā vegetables in it. Really, really good.
GlutenousĀ flour and bean paste inside. I like it. Ā Ā What do you think, Tim? It’s not bad. I like it. So, asĀ we were spending time in Kuching catching upĀ Ā on making videos and taking a bit of a rest fromĀ the constant fatigue of the road, we figured thisĀ Ā
Would be as good of a moment as any to go to theĀ doctor. And we also had been renting this amazingĀ Ā apartment from our good friends Jason and Pilly.Ā Thank you, Jason and Pilly and Aya and Ibu, you guysĀ Ā
Are the best to let us rent this place. Thank you soĀ much. Wow, it’s beautiful. Look at this wonderfulĀ Ā gift! Thank you! Thank you! And it’s just given usĀ some time to settle down and do some research onĀ Ā
The doctors to go to. Malaysia is one of the bestĀ places to go because the healthcare services areĀ Ā top-notch while being still very affordable. Yeah,Ā there’s some cool apps out there that can help youĀ Ā decide where to go with trusted reviews and such,Ā and one of them being On Vacation Doctor just getsĀ Ā
You in contact with doctors that speak English,Ā which is really important because sometimes whenĀ Ā you’re describing pain and issues, there’s poorĀ translation. I mean, we had like a trio ofĀ Ā failures, majority on my end. I had lost someĀ hearing. I’m listening to podcasts and stuff,Ā Ā
And it seems echoey. Yeah. And it was really affectingĀ your mood too. Yeah, I was even moreĀ Ā stubborn. If you can imagine! Can you imagine,Ā folks? Yeah, I wanted to knowĀ Ā what it was, because I needed it to go away. I mean,Ā we ride motorcycles around the world, for like 6Ā Ā
Years. So that’s a lot of wind damage. And when IĀ was in my teenagers, there was a lot of Pantera andĀ Ā Guns and Roses blaring in my ears. And no earplugsĀ at that point in time. Young and reckless. NowĀ Ā
I’m old and a wreck. So we wanted to see theĀ hearing doctor. And we’re about to insert aĀ Ā gross picture. So children, women, men under 70,Ā close your eyes. Men over 70 can handle this. They’d be lik, “Oh yeah…” “I got that too.” “I get that too.”
But I went to the hearing doctor,Ā and there was a very nice gentleman,Ā Ā and he pulled out of my head a candlestick. So much wax! It was a lot of ear wax! This is true. So this was the before
And after of my eardrums. How disgusting isĀ that, folks? We won’t go into further detailĀ Ā just because I donāt want to lose subscribers.Ā Oh, but the best part is they give you this littleĀ Ā before and after thing like an ultrasound,Ā right? Yeah, this picture.Ā Ā
They give you this picture of shameĀ to bring home. Like I’m going to put it onĀ Ā my fridge or something. But I turned it around andĀ I wrote a little postcard to my brother Matt andĀ Ā
Sent it to him. And it never got to him becauseĀ I think along the way all the postal service people wereĀ Ā vomiting. Just like “what is this? Blahhh!” Until Ā someone finally… burnt it. You look to the mirror, you canĀ Ā
See this crack all the way going down. You went to theĀ dentist. Yeah, I had this nerve pain, ghost pain.Ā Ā And I’ve had a root canal done. I call it my crownĀ of Africa. I was crowned in Uganda. Yes,Ā Ā
We lived in Uganda for a little bit during theĀ pandemic, and you got a crown from our favoriteĀ Ā dentist over there, Stanley. I got a rootĀ canal, but it had been giving me trouble everĀ Ā since. Yeah, recurring infections actually. ItĀ was pretty bad. And so we went to a dentist whoĀ Ā
Said that the root canal was not done all theĀ way down and so he gave me a new root canal.Ā Ā Right? How exciting! Halfway through the rootĀ canal, he said your tooth is highly damaged.Ā Ā
And so they pulled my tooth out. Mhm. So nowĀ I have like a half a pound of ear wax removed,Ā Ā a couple grams of a tooth removed. Are you feelingĀ more lightheaded now? I am. I’m still grumpy.Ā Ā
Can’t take that away from me. That’s my bloodline.Ā But the most important doctor that we went to goĀ Ā see⦠Excuse me. I think. TheĀ most important doctor was for my wrist.Ā Ok, so as you may know, about 3 months ago I fellĀ getting off the motorcycle and hurt my wrist.Ā Ā
I fell in a ditch and put my hand out, and IĀ pretty much went immediately to the nearestĀ Ā hospital in Cianjur in Indonesia, and they tookĀ x-rays. According to the X-rays, I had not brokenĀ Ā any bones. So that was really, really great. IĀ was trying to take care of my wrist after that,Ā Ā
And for about the first two weeks, it was feelingĀ pretty good, like it was really on the mend.Ā Ā But then after that, it started getting worseĀ and getting a lot more pain. I don’t know if IĀ Ā
Reinjured it in some way. But it’s been 3 monthsĀ now and now it doesn’t move, and it doesn’t moveĀ Ā back or forward. I can bend my fingers back,Ā but the wrist, this is as far back as it bends,Ā Ā
Whereas this one goes like that. And then itĀ doesn’t bend any more than that. I can’t putĀ Ā any pressure on it. I can’t be like, “stop,” likeĀ it just doesn’t bend. I can’t do a push-up,Ā Ā obviously. I can’t even do air push-ups, no.Ā So that’s not good, and I definitely want itĀ Ā
To get checked out again. So today, we areĀ going to go to the hospital and talk to theĀ Ā doctors and see what’s going on because there’sĀ definitely something wrong. So we went to one ofĀ Ā the biggest hospitals here in Kuching who hadĀ specialists in this area. But unfortunately,Ā Ā
When they did the x-ray, they were not able to getĀ any conclusive determination of whether my wrist…Ā Ā Whether my wrist was injured or not. Yes. There’sĀ a small little scaphoid bone that they said itĀ Ā
Could be broken, it might not be, it doesn’t lookĀ like there’s a lot of healing going on, but we’reĀ Ā not sure. So they wanted to get an MRI, and thisĀ was my first time in an MRI. It is big, it’s loud,Ā Ā
It’s clunky. You have to hold perfectly still forĀ a very long time. And for me, that was thankfullyĀ Ā only about 20 minutes, but it’s still prettyĀ uncomfortable and very, very loud and unnerving. But I got out of it. And then the worstĀ part happened. I just got out of the MRI,Ā Ā
Which was an interesting experience. Basically,Ā they’re not sure if I have a broken bone or not.Ā Ā It might be a tiny fracture. They want to seeĀ how much is healing. It might not be anything,Ā Ā but there is something wrong. But that’s why theĀ MRI was needed. But from what they could tell,Ā Ā
It seemed like it’s not healing. Worst caseĀ scenario is I would need surgery. They said,Ā Ā “Look, we don’t know if there’s any healingĀ happening here. If there isn’t any healing,Ā Ā you are probably going to need some sortĀ of surgery.” Like a bone graft was going toĀ Ā
Be involved because we didn’t catch it in time.Ā Along with titanium rods. It sounded pretty bad.Ā Ā But they said that theyĀ wouldn’t know for sure until the MRI resultsĀ Ā came in, which would be the next morning. The nextĀ day, and it’s like 13 hours of like, “Oh my God!”Ā Ā
We’ll see. We’ll come back tomorrowĀ at 10:30 a.m. to find out the results. Okay, so it is the morning that we are goingĀ to go back to the hospital and see the officialĀ Ā diagnosis of my wrist. I got an MRI, and thatĀ should tell if my scaphoid is broken or not,Ā Ā
Or if I need to have surgery. So we’reĀ going to go find out. Wish us luck. The next morning, we headed to the hospital. GoodĀ news, good news, good news! The MRI showed thatĀ Ā I do not have a very serious broken bone. IfĀ anything, it’s just small minor fractures, andĀ Ā
It seems to be healing. In general, I don’t need aĀ cast, I don’t need surgery! All I need is time andĀ Ā love and patience and doing some exercises with myĀ wrist. Yay! This is such such such good news! Oh,Ā Ā
What a great day! I did not have any broken bones,Ā and as you can see since then, it has improvedĀ Ā dramatically. It is not 100%, but it bends aĀ whole lot better than it used to. This is true. Show people your purple palm.Ā Oh! In the comments below,Ā Ā
Guess why Marisa’s hands are purple? So we had a celebratory meal right after the goodĀ news and went to our favorite little restaurant inĀ Ā the area. It’s called The All-In Cafe. Hey! I’mĀ here at my favorite little restaurant here. WeĀ Ā
Always always eat here, and this is Andi, andĀ he is just the best. He’s such a great chef,Ā Ā and we absolutely love all the food that he cooksĀ here, and we come here all the time. Thank you soĀ Ā
Much, Andi! Thank you so much! Thank you so much.Ā And our dear friend Andi works there. He becameĀ Ā our friend because we went to this restaurant allĀ the time, and he’s amazing. He’s an awesome person.Ā Ā And Andi makes these wonderful Indian breadsĀ called “roti canai-o.” I mean, he makes allĀ Ā
Sorts of different types, but those are the onesĀ that we like, and a special curry sauce that goesĀ Ā along with it. And he’s just an awesome dude.Ā And through Google translate and broken Malay…Ā Ā There’s a language barrier. But it’s justĀ really cool. We really are appreciative ofĀ Ā
His kindness. Everybody’s kindness! Lee hasĀ just been an awesome tour guide.Ā Ā And he wanted to take us to that night bridgeĀ Yeah! Ā [Satok Bridge – 1.5547Ė North 110.3243Ė East] So for further celebration,Ā we went to this gorgeous bridge at night thatĀ was all lit up. Walking down that bridge was likeĀ Ā
Bifrost from Thor. Oh, that bridge in Asgard,Ā the Rainbow Bridge? Yeah. It was like that!Ā Ā It was totally awesome. I was Thor, I didn’t knowĀ if that was obvious. I’ll be Loki, don’t worry. But it was about time that we felt we wantedĀ to get back on a motorcycle. And Lee saidĀ Ā that we could borrow his little Honda 150.Ā Good morning, everyone! Today, we’re going to doĀ Ā something super special. We’re going to be ridingĀ a motorcycle here in Malaysia for the first time.Ā Ā
As you probably know, we had to leave Dorco, ourĀ motorcycle, back in Indonesia. But here our friendĀ Ā Lee is going to be letting us use his motorcycle,Ā one of his motorcycles, so that we’reĀ Ā
Going to go together to a very special place thatĀ a lot of motorcyclists here go to called Mile 0 orĀ Ā Kilometer Zero. It’s kind of like the end of theĀ road of Borneo. So that should be pretty cool,Ā Ā
And we’re super excited to finally be on theĀ road in Malaysia. 150 cubic cm’s, small motorcycle.Ā Ā Small bike, lightweight bike. I love it. What is itĀ exactly? Honda RS 150R, this one. And he wouldĀ Ā ride his BMW GS 1200. And we were like, “Yeah,Ā this sounds awesome!” Uh, but yeah, I didn’t knowĀ Ā
How the little 150 was going to keep up with theĀ 1200. Especially with both of us on it. Whoa… But that will all be in the next episode. We’re going faster than we were on Dorco! Look atĀ that! 85! We’re cruising, folks! How fast? We’re doing a 100 kilometers per hour!Ā Ā
We’re only in fifth gear. We got a whole otherĀ gear to burn through. So I hope you like thisĀ Ā video. If you did, please give us a big thumbsĀ up and hit the subscribe button below. Ding ding.Ā
And we’ll be seeing you next time. Stay safe,Ā everybody. We’d love to have you guys along forĀ Ā the ride. And if you are interested, weĀ do have a Patreon page where we release theĀ Ā videos like 5 days to a week early. And we sendĀ out postcards from wherever we are in the world.
So check out our Patreon link in the descriptionĀ below, and we hope to see you there. Stay safe,Ā Ā everybody. Bye! Peace. The thing about laksa isĀ that it could be spice level one or it could beĀ Ā spice level 101. You just don’tĀ know what you’re getting until you’reĀ Ā
Either crying tears of happinessĀ or tears of pain. Tears of pain.Ā Ā Yes, and sometimes both. Yes. One outĀ of each eye. A tear and a little blood drop.
Itās scary enough leaving your home for a trip to the other side of the world. But when your life is completely on the road, there are times when you have to do things that you would normally save for back home ā such as going to the hospital.
Thatās precisely what we had to do in Kuching, East Malaysia. And not just the hospital, but the hearing doctor, the dentist⦠And we had one burning question on our minds the whole time – is health care good in Southeast Asia? Will it meet our standards?
Well, weāre here to dispel all myths, and share the reality of the Malaysian medical system.
