The Chichibu Night Festival, which began about 300 years ago, is now known as one of Japan’s three major float festivals, along with the Kyoto Gion Festival and the Hida Takayama Festival. There are two floats called “Kasahoko,” which means flower umbrellas, and four floats called “Yatai.”

Chichibu Night Festival is a major festival at Chichibu Shrine. People tour the streets of Chichibu pulling gorgeous floats, and Kabuki is performed inside the floats. Fireworks decorate the night sky and the festival is crowded with many visitors.

The origins of the festival date back to the mid-Edo period, when a raw silk market opened within the grounds of a shrine. The charm of the festival is the brightly colored paper lanterns swaying on floats against the backdrop of fireworks exploding into the winter sky.

The Chichibu Festival floats and kagura have been designated as important intangible folk cultural properties.
