Kyoto Japan|Stroll Around Nijo Castle & Shinsen-en Garden|字幕CC|Gardens & Castle from Heian Period|4K
Welcome back! the Gion Matsuri, which is one of the three biggest festivals in Japan. It’s held every July in Kyoto, and it’s a spectacle to behold. But do you know where the Gion Matsuri came from? Well, I didn’t either until I visited this amazing place in Kyoto.
It’s called the Shinsen-en Garden, and it’s a temple complex with a beautiful garden. It is located in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City. The garden has a huge pond called the Hojo-ike (Japanese:法成就池), which means the Dharma Pond.
In the middle of the pond, there’s a small island with a shrine dedicated to Benzaiten (弁財天), the goddess of wealth and music. She’s one of the seven lucky gods in Japan, and she’s very popular among people who want to prosper.
The Shinsen-en used to be even bigger. It covered about 130,000 square meters, and it included the Nijo Castle, which is another famous landmark in Kyoto. But when the castle was built in the 17th century, the garden was reduced to one-sixteenth of its original size. That’s still pretty big though, don’t you think?
One of the things I loved about the garden was the fish in the pond. There were so many carps swimming around, and they looked so happy and peaceful. I even saw a white carp that stood out from the rest. It was like a rare gem in the water.
Another thing that caught my eye was the bright red bridge that crossed the pond. It’s called the Hosei-kyo, which means the Law Bridge. The bridge matches perfectly with the green trees and the pink flowers around it.
There’s also another shrine in the garden that’s worth visiting. It’s called the Shinryu Gongen, which means the Dragon King Deity. It’s a shrine that honors the dragon god who controls water and rain.
One of the fun things you can do in the garden is to feed the fish. You can buy some fish food for 100 yen (about $1) and toss it into the pond.
Another thing you can do is to make a wish on the bridge. They say that if you cross the bridge and say your wish silently in your heart, your wish will come true. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I tried it anyway. I won’t tell you what I wished for though. That’s a secret.
I spent a lot of time in the garden, just wandering around and admiring the scenery. I felt like I was transported back in time, to when this place was full of life and activity.
I actually came here 10 years ago, when I saw the cherry blossoms in full bloom. It was a different season, but not much had changed. The place was still as beautiful and serene as ever. Autumn are passed, but there were still some scattered red leaves .
Did you know that this garden was where Japan’s first national Goryo-e was held?
A Goryo-e is a ritual to appease angry spirits and prevent disasters. In 863, there was an epidemic that killed many people, so Emperor Seiwa ordered a Goryo-e to be held here. In 869, another Goryo-e was held here with 66 floats that represented different provinces. This was the origin of the parade at the Gion Matsuri.
There’s also a small pool in the garden called the Shinji-ike, which means the Heart Mirror Pond. They say that when you look at your reflection in the water, you can see your true emotions.
It was built earlier than the imperial garden by Emperor Kanmu in 794 AD. It is a pond-and-spring circulation garden. It is now a nationally designated historic site. As you can see, the camellias are blooming. The red leaves in Shenquan Garden are still bright red, making it a good place to watch red leaves.
Opposite the Garden is Kyoto Nijo Castle. Let’s go and take a look. The ducks are swimming by the river. As I looked at the scenery reflected in the water, I could feel the harsh winter approaching in Kyoto. Kyoto Nijo Castle moat.
Nijo Castle in Kyoto was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1603 and is the site of many famous historical events. It is now a world cultural heritage. It’s about a 5-minute walk from Nijo-mae Subway Station. You can also come by JR trains and buses.
If you are interested in taking the train or bus, you can learn more in our blog post described below. Stay tuned for the next video as we show you the best places to visit and things to do in this beautiful city!
