Kotohira-gu Shrine is a popular tourist attraction representing Kagawa Prefecture. The closest stations to the Shrine are Japan Railways’ Kotohira Station and Kotoden Kotohira Station. To go to Kotohira-gu Shrine from Takamatsu city, you can transfer to the J R Takamatsu to Kotohira Station, which takes about an
Hour. You can also take the Kotohira Electric Railway. The Railway is a tram line with great history and characteristics. It takes about an hour to get to Kotoden Kotohira Station. Kotoden Kotohira Station has a long history and a nostalgic atmosphere. Now let’s go outside the station.
Suddenly, a huge torii gate appeared at the station, with the direction of Kotohira-gu Shrine behind it. This is the starting point of Kotohira-gu Shrine, called the Omiya Torii. From this point on, the roads are no longer asphalt, but cobbled.
This is a place called Hokushinen in Kotohira Shrine. There is an old torii gate in North Aster Garden with a lantern inside. This was built in 1865 and is currently designated as a national important folk cultural property. The building is about 27
Meters high and has three floors inside. It is the tallest wooden lantern in Japan. After passing through the torii gate, there is a bridge. Before entering the gate of the Shrine, there are many shops on both sides, selling souvenirs, renting wooden sticks, and restaurants.
Kagawa Prefecture is the birthplace of udon, so there are many udon shops and Japanese restaurants on this street. There is also a soft ice cream vending stall, too. We went to a winery first. This brewery is a sake brewery with a long history, established in 1789.
It has now been converted into a museum and is open to the public free of charge. In the center of the museum is the courtyard, with a huge camphor tree in the center! The camphor tree is a sacred tree and is revered as the guardian tree of eternal winemaking.
Based on the estimated age of the tree, the tree is from the Kamakura period. The beautiful courtyard has a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. Here, we can visit the history of the winery, from the rice warehouse to the fermentation vat, from the press to the storage warehouse, and also display various winemaking tools
And utensils. The museum explains the sake brewing process in detail, and also displays many sake-related cultural materials and sake utensils. There are restrooms and seats here, making it a good place to take a short break. There is also a free hot spring bath in shopping streets of Omotesando . This is
A foot bath for bathing, and even non-guests can use it for free. The footbath is located next to the shrine approach. You can enjoy a leisurely footbath while overlooking Omotesando. We walked up the stairs. Starting from the first staircase, we had to climb 785 steps to reach the main hall of Shrine.
We went to the Kotohira Town Public Hall, which is a wooden Western-style building built in the 1930s and is one of the landmarks of Kotohira Town. The building is located near the approach to Kotohira-gu Shrine and has a majestic appearance with the beautiful green mountains as its
Backdrop. The cherry blossom trees in the spring garden are in bloom and the scenery is beautiful. The Kotohira Town Public Hall is a national cultural property and is not open to the public.
