Takamoridon’s Cedar Takamori Town, Aso District Description of Takamoridon’s Cedar. A pair of giant cedar trees that are over 400 years old stand halfway up the southern somma in Takamori Town, Aso District.

The circumference of the trunk is about 10m, the height is about 25m, and there are some with countless branches and others with three branches. These cedar trees are called “couple cedar” because they resemble a male cedar and a female cedar nestled against each other.

This cedar has been designated as a natural monument of Takamori Town and is carefully protected. Takamori-don refers to Takamori Iyonokami Korenao. It is said that in 1586, during the invasion of the Satsuma Shimazu clan, a defeated samurai was cornered while fleeing with his entourage and committed suicide at this spot.

Recently, actress Miho Kanno visited the tree and hugged the trunk, receiving power from it, and it was said that they were happily married soon after. Word of this spread, and it suddenly became famous as a matchmaking spot.

There is a short distance from the entrance of the first parking lot to Takamoridon’s cedar, so let’s take a walk together. It’s grazing land, so be careful of cow dung as you go. It’s quite an uphill climb, but you can get there in 5-6 minutes. The largest tree here is the Takamoridon’s cedar.
