Today I am at Marugame Station in Kagawa Prefecture. Walk to Marugame Castle from Marugame Station. It is about a 15 minute walk from the station to Marugame Castle. I could see the stone wall and the castle tower. The gate you can see in the foreground is Ote-ni-no-mon.

Otemon is made up of two main gates, Korai-mon and Ichi-no-mon, Yagura-mon. Marugame Castle was recently selected as one of the “100 Beloved Castles” released by KADOKAWA. Please check out the wonderful “Calendar of the 12 Existing Castle Towers” included in the separate appendix. Otemon is said to have been completed around 1670.

The inside of Oteichi-no-mon is open to the public, and we will tour it last. A chrysanthemum exhibition was being held at that time. I feel like I gained a lot. Ahead, the gate, guardhouse, and tenement house remain. This gate seems to have been the front gate of the Kyogoku clan’s mansion.

Return to the normal route and aim for the main enclosure. Marugame Castle is a flat mountain castle built on Kameyama at an altitude of 66 meters. The total height of the stone walls is the highest in Japan, and it is famous nationwide as a famous stone wall castle.

This high stone wall is called a fan slope. Kyoshi Takahama’s haiku monument. We have arrived at Sannomaru. What you can see in front of you is the remains of Ushitora Yaguradai. You can see all the way to the Seto Inland Sea. You can see Sanuki Fuji. Head to Ninomaru.

There is a well in Ninomaru, and it seems to be 65m deep. This is the Ninomaru’s grip. Let’s look at the castle tower from Sannomaru. I returned to Ninomaru. Finally, we head to the main enclosure. The castle tower was built in 1660 and is the oldest castle tower in Shikoku.

Enter the inside of the castle tower. This is a tile with the Kyogoku clan’s family crest, the “Yotsume-kyumon”. I went up to the second floor of the castle tower. The color and luster of the wood gives you a sense of the times. I arrived at the top floor.

It seems that there used to be turrets at the four corners of the main enclosure, which were connected by earthen walls. The stone wall on the south side of the castle collapsed due to heavy rains in western Japan, and restoration work is underway. I went down to Sannomaru.

On the way back, I will get off from the Ashi-te exit. This area is Tochinoki Gomonzeki. The entrance to Marugame Castle was once the main entrance, so the stone walls were built solidly. Earthworks were placed on the Edo side. Some of the stone walls in the field remain.

The south side is currently undergoing restoration work. I hope the construction progresses smoothly. There was also an Ishigaki restoration PR museum. Finally, we will tour the inside of Oteichi-no-mon. Thank you for your viewing.
