ITATí y su MAJESTUOSO SANTUARIO (Walking Tour)🔸ARGENTINA 4K

Hello friends how are you? Good morning… We are here in Itatí, province of Corrientes. Visiting the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Itatí. A small, but beautiful place. So let’s get to know him, shall we? Come on!

Itatí is a city in the north of the province of Corrientes, on the banks of the Paraná River, Argentina. The municipality includes the islands: Verde, Guazú, Itá Ritá, Pañuelo, and Abra. We are now crossing the Fray Luis de Bolaños Central Plaza.

The city was founded on December 7, 1615 by the Franciscan priest Luis de Bolaños. The foundation was probably made in the vicinity of an ancient indigenous town that Sebastián Gaboto arrived in 1528 and called Santa Ana.

The existence of Santa Ana was confirmed, like Fort Sancti Spiritus, in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (first modern atlas ), published in 1570. Itatí is located 73 kilometers from the City of Corrientes, the provincial capital. In 1999, the historic center of Itatí was declared a “Historic Town”.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Itatí is a Catholic sanctuary and temple, the main center of veneration of the image of the Virgin of Itatí and located in front of the main square of Itatí. Its size and design are unique in this region.

Its measurements are 81 meters long by 63 meters wide, with a capacity to hold 9,000 faithful inside. Its peak, crowned by an image of the Virgin made of copper, reaches 88 meters, being the highest in South America.

The construction of the Basilica began in 1938, under the direction of the Italian Alfredo Gibellini, and it was partially opened on July 16, 1950, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Coronation of the Virgin.

Behind the main altar is the Virgin’s dressing room, a kind of oratory chapel intended for more intimate meditation and contemplation. The back of the dressing room has a beautiful mural that represents indigenous people with native musical instruments, venerating the Virgin on the banks of the Paraná River.

Likewise, the main image of the Virgin is located inside a rotating display case, which during mass hours, the image remains facing the main altar, while during silent adoration, the Virgin rotates until she is located with her back to the main altar. , looking towards the dressing room.

The devotion comes from a wooden sculpture that was taken to an existing indigenous reduction in what is now Itatí, the image of Mary would have manifested itself in 1615, indicating her willingness to remain in that place. The basilica is the last of 9 sanctuaries, intended for the veneration of said image.

Do I have to pay? Thank you. Hello good morning! To go up to the terrace, what is it? Is it the dome? Yes. $200 pesos? Yes how much? One. Just go ahead. Thank you! It seems like there are a few steps we have to climb, but it will surely be worth it.

Let’s go up to the Dome. In the background the majestic Paraná River. It seems there were leaks in the ceiling. They are passing liquid membrane. The old church of Itatí, today the Sacred Museum. View towards the Main Plaza.

The chapel that served as a sanctuary before the construction of the basilica still remains on one side of it, having been converted into a Sacred Museum. The name Itatí has an etymology of Guaraní origin.

It is believed to come from the combination of two words: “ita”, which means “stone” and “ty”, which translates as “white”. Therefore, Itatí can be interpreted as meaning “white stone.” The reason behind this name has to do with a legendary story, which takes place in the province of Corrientes.

According to legend, a young Guaraní girl named Itatí was persecuted by the Spanish conquistadors. Itatí sought refuge on the banks of the Paraná River and asked the Virgin Mary to protect her from her pursuers. The Virgin granted his request and transformed Itatí into a pile of white stones.

Since then, the place where this transformation occurred became a pilgrimage point and a church was built in honor of the Virgin of Itatí. This place became known as the “White Stone”, in allusion to the name of the young Guaraní woman.

Over time, the name Itatí also came to be used as a proper name, especially in the Corrientes region and in Paraguay. It is a very popular name and its use has spread to various cultures and Spanish-speaking countries. We are reaching the Itatí waterfront, where we started the walk.

Well, that’s it for our journey. I hope you enjoyed it. The truth is the Church of Itatí… If there is a word to define it it is…. Monumental! When you see it face to face it is something impressively large, beautiful. So well… I hope you enjoyed the ride.
