List of national treasure buildings ⑩Hiroshima/Yamaguchi Prefecture This is a channel that introduces national treasure buildings from all over Japan. This time we will introduce the national treasure buildings of Hiroshima and Yamaguchi prefectures. You can see national treasure buildings in 5 locations in Hiroshima Prefecture and 3 locations in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
1.Myooin main hall and 1 other building Myoo-in Temple in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima It is said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi in 807. A Shingon sect temple located on a slightly elevated location along the Ashida River The main hall was built in 1321. The five-storied pagoda is over 29 meters high. Built in 1348 The only remaining remains of a medieval Esoteric Buddhist temple 2.Jodoji main hall and 1 other building Jodoji Temple in Onomichi City, Hiroshima A Shingon sect temple said to have been founded in 616
One of the oldest temples in the Chugoku region, said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku The main hall was built in 1327. A compromise of 5 spaces for both girders and beams. Tahoto was built in 1319 The decoration on the crotch is also elaborate. Jodoji is here when seen from Senkoji Park 3. Kojoji temple three-storied pagoda Kojoji Temple on Ikuchijima Island in Onomichi City, Hiroshima A Soto sect temple founded in 1400 Go up the stairs on the left side of the main hall The three-storied pagoda was built in 1432. The newest of the national treasure three-storied pagodas It has a strong Zen-like feel, such as the flower head window. The tail rafters and braided design are also distinctive. The view of the Seto Inland Sea from the hill behind the tower is also wonderful. 4. Fudoin Kondo
Fudo-in Temple in Hiroshima City, Hiroshima A Shingon sect temple said to have been founded in the Heian period Kondo was built in 1540 A gabled structure with a 3-way girder row and 4-way beam space with a moss floor. It is the largest surviving Zen Buddhist temple in Japan. Climb the stairs behind the main hall There are also the graves of Masanori Fukushima and Ekei Ankokuji.
The name of the temple before it was renamed Fudoin was Ankokuji. 5. Itsukushima Shrine Main Hall and 9 other buildings Itsukushima Shrine in Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima It is said to have been founded in 593. The guardian deities of the sea, Ichikishima Hime, Tagori Hime, and Tagitsuhime, are enshrined.
Taira no Kiyomori repaired the Shinden-zukuri Maritime Shrine in 1168. (Main building, purification hall) Built in 1241 (Main building) Built in 1571 (Temple of Worship) Built in 1241 The main hall has 8 rooms in front of the column. The worship hall has a cypress bark roof with 10 girders. The east corridor has 45 rooms and the west corridor has 62 rooms. Both were built around 1600. The main building of Maroudo Shrine, a national treasure, is under repair until December 2022. The Otorii gate is also under repair until the same month. There is an inner shrine on Mt. Misen in the background.

Rurikoji Temple Five-storied Pagoda Rurikoji Temple in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Soto sect temple founded in 1471 The five-storied pagoda was built to pray for Yoshihiro Ouchi’s body. Built in 1442 The height is 31.2m, and the roof is thatched with cypress bark and has a gentle slope. Structure where the eaves protrude deeply and the spaces between the layers narrow towards the top.
There are only four five-storied pagodas with cypress bark roofs: Muroji Temple, Hasedera Temple, Itsukushima Shrine, and here. In the precincts, there is a history of the Choshu domain since it moved its castle from Hagi. There is also a graveyard of the Mori family. 7. Kozanji Buddhist Hall Kozanji Temple in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi
Soto sect temple founded in 1327 The main shrine was built in 1320. Japan’s oldest Zen Buddhist temple A typical example of Zen-style architecture with deeply curved eaves and a raised floor. Behind the Buddhist temple is the grave of the Mori family of the Chofu domain.
There is also a Hokyoin pagoda, which is said to be the grave of Yoshihiro Ouchi, who committed suicide here. 8. Sumiyoshi Shrine Main Hall Sumiyoshi Shrine in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi An old shrine said to have been founded by Empress Jingu Ichinomiya in Nagato Province, one of Japan’s three major Sumiyoshi
The first thing you see is the long and unusual shrine in the back. The main shrine was built in 1370. 9-ken shrine building with 22.8m rows It is made up of five shrine buildings connected by a phase hall. Each shrine has a staggered gable.
