We will visit the area around Kushida Jinja-mae Station on the Fukuoka Municipal Subway Nanakuma Line. Kushida-jinja-mae Station was opened in March 2023, when the Nanakuma Subway Line opened from Tenjin-minami to Hakata. Traditional Hakata crafts such as Hakata dolls and Hakata textiles are on display in the concourse.

These traditional handicrafts delight the eyes of visitors to the station. Once you get to the ground, you will see office buildings and hotels. It is a corner of the center of Hakata. About 5 minutes walk from Kushida Jinja-mae Station. We arrived at the approach to Kushida Shrine.

This area is the old center of Hakata. This streetscape gives you a sense of the history of Hakata, a trading city that has continued since the Middle Ages. Kushida Shrine is said to have been founded in 757. During the Middle Ages, it was destroyed several times by fires caused by battles.

The current shrine building was donated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587. Three gods are enshrined at Kushida Shrine. Ohtanushi no mikoto Susanoo no Mikoto Amaterasu Omikami Kushida Shrine is the guardian deity of Hakata. He is also the god of business and eternal youth and longevity. It has attracted the deep faith of local people.

Kushida Shrine is also a tourist spot in Hakata. Many tourists visit from inside and outside Japan. Kushida Shrine’s annual festival, Hakata Gion Yamakasa, is held every July. Decorated Yamakasa, which can be said to be the symbol of the festival, are permanently installed on the grounds.

The area around Kushida Shrine is a downtown area. This street is commonly called “Ginnan(ginkgo) Street”. The building on the right is the Guion Building, built in 1950. Kawabata-dori shopping street. It boasts a history of over 130 years as the center of the commercial city of Hakata.

There are about 100 shops in the arcade, which is over 400 meters long. It is lined with shops of various genres, from long-established shops to newly opened shops, restaurants to clothing stores. It is a shopping street that caters to the diverse needs of tourists and local residents. Speaking of Hakata, it’s “ramen”

There are many ramen shops in Kawabatadori shopping street. This is the ramen restaurant “Nagahamake” This is one of the restaurants that continues to preserve the taste of “Nagahama Ramen”. “Nagahama Ramen” has a light taste of pork bone soup. There are many other types of ramen in Hakata.

Ramen restaurant “Dosanko”. Miso ramen is famous. The key point is that it’s not “Sapporo ramen” but “Hakata miso ramen.” This miso-flavored ramen is different from the “tonkotsu soup” that has been loved in Hakata for over 50 years. This is the “Zenzai” square.

It inherits the taste of Kawabata Zenzai, which was said to be the sweetest in Japan during the Taisho era(1912~1926). After passing through the Kawabata-dori shopping street, you will arrive at Nakasu Kawabata Station on the Subway Airport Line.
