@suebrycephotographer’s journey to becoming a #CanonExplorerOfLight: “In October 2016, I was on stage at my first conference where I did this shoot live. I had all 12 of the people I photographed walk on stage holding their printed portrait. This complete series was 12 different subjects and I asked them to dress how they wanted and do their hair how they wanted. When I saw Tolu, I noticed she had no makeup on and I asked her if that was her intention and she said yes! I took this photo of her and my heart exploded.

I have built a career on exactly this type of session, How do you want to be photographed? How do you want to be seen? One woman and one light and an intimate conversation, after 33 years this is still the most magical part of what I do.

For many photographers, a portrait is an environmental or technical perfection. For me it is just a moment of who you really are, a connection, just a glimpse of your inner confidence and power. I want you as a viewer to feel her presence in this image and read her story in her eyes, but I want her to see her true beauty and the light of her soul.

I purchased my first Canon film camera in 1992 when I became a full-time photographer and then my first Canon digital camera in 2003, the year I launched my business. As my business became successful, I evolved through the years upgrading my camera until this shoot in 2016 when I stood on the stage of my boutique conference in front of 500 photographers and shot on the then-new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.

I became a Canon Explorer of Light for Canon USA in November 2015, after over 20 years of using this camera system, I felt it was the greatest honor of my career. To be up on stage showing photographers how I built a career and the magic of what we create, are the iconic moments for me.”
