Photo by @acacia.johnson: “You know that a wildlife encounter is a success when the animals are completely at peace with your presence. In Alaska’s McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, more brown bears gather to fish for salmon than anywhere else on earth – and thanks to a carefully managed bear-viewing program, the bears view humans as a neutral presence.

As I sat on the rocky tidal flats with a companion and the sanctuary manager, this beautiful mother bear wandered in front of us, lay down, and began nursing her two yearling cubs. I immediately lay flat on the ground with my camera and zoomed in at eye-level with the bears – both to blur the foreground and to give the sense of connecting with them eye-to-eye.

To me, this image is about the incredible trust that can exist between humans and animals — when we protect the space and habitat they need to thrive.”
