@davidbergman’s journey to becoming a #CanonExplorerOfLight: “While I’m mostly known for my work today as a music photographer and photo educator, this 2004 portrait of my daughter has had a major influence on my career. It was the day before her six-month birthday and the initial exhaustion and stress of having a newborn was finally starting to wear off. I wanted to make a ‘real’ portrait, so I set up a couple of large studio lights with softboxes in my living room, rolled out a backdrop, and gently placed my little girl on top of a pillow. I captured this expression just as she tried to put her foot in her mouth – literally.

This image reminds me of what photography is really about: documenting the most important moments and people in our lives. That could be our family and friends, or even the music that brings us all together. Whether I’m working on stages around the world or teaching a live workshop, I’m keenly aware that photography is a recording of history. The work is a collection of memories for myself, and for fans of the artists I work with. I don’t take that responsibility for granted.

Now 18 years old and wise beyond her years, my daughter continues to make me proud of the woman she’s become. It feels like I made this photo just yesterday, but also a million years ago. Because I took out the camera on that day in 2004, I’ll always be able to remember her as the six-month-old baby girl with those big, beautiful eyes.”
