Building a signature brand that separates you from the masses should be the goal of every artist. There are many variables I use to help assist me with this process, such as lighting, composition, retouching techniques, etc. One underutilized variable is what lens you choose. For years I shot thousands of portraits using a 24mm focal length lens that helped me establish my brand early in my career. Recently I have been choosing my RF50mm F1.2L USM lens, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite portrait lenses. At its widest aperture of f/1.2, the results are breathtaking. For this image of Bruce, I used the Canon EOS R5, with the RF50mm F1.2L USM shot wide open. But as a side twist, I shot three total vertical images, center, left, and right, and then stitched them together in post to create one final square image.”
