“I started my photography career in 2008, and started using Canon products in 2013 after selling my previous gear. Most of my photography friends were using Canon when I’d hire them as my assistant, and they talked about how great of a system it was. So, I decided to take a chance and never looked back. After transitioning into new gear and understanding my role as a photojournalist, I took my photography and storytelling skills more seriously so that I could value the images as moments that were meant to be archived and cherished. These same skills helped me meet some of my idols and share stories that have a place in the historical aspect of not only African American history, but world history.
I’m grateful to have the opportunity to share what has been bestowed on me, now as a Canon Explorer of Light. This honor allows me to continue the same work, and set the path for more Black, women, and LGBTQ+ photojournalists and portrait photographers to know that they have a rightful place in documenting everyday life without constraints.”
