This large butterfly is a very popular butterfly in butterfly houses. This beauty was filmed in Butterfly World, Coconut Creek, FL. Tripods are not allowed so this was a hand held image with a bit of fill flash. The key here is having enough shutter speed to hand hold a 100-400 IS II lens at minimum focus, and have enough depth of field to ensure the subject is sharp all around. The camera should be perfectly square with the plane of the butterfly wing to ensure adequate sharpness from top to bottom. Fill flash was set at minus 2 stops below the ambient light. This setting on a cloudy day reduces some of the darker shadow areas, and does not look flashed. I look for subjects I can square with, and are quite a bit in front of their background. This yields a soft natural looking background that is not distracting.” Camera: #Canon EOS IDX Mark III
