⁴ᴷ Ehime: Dogo Onsen Station (愛媛県: 道後温泉駅) – Japan Walking Tour (January, 2026)
I’ve decided to take an off-season trip back to my hometown in Kobe, using it as a starting point for a journey all the way around Shikoku. Traveling from Takamatsu through Kochi and around the Ashizuri Peninsula, I’ve now made my way north to Matsuyama City, Ehime.
My destination is the famous Dogo Onsen. The renovation of the iconic Dogo Onsen Honkan is complete, and it currently features stunning installations by photographer Mika Ninagawa. The fusion of historic architecture and vibrant modern art is truly a sight to behold.
As I explored further, I also found a well-preserved adult entertainment district—a landscape that is becoming increasingly rare in other hot spring towns across Japan. Walking through these streets, I was struck by the contrast between the colorful, artistic atmosphere of the main bathhouse and the raw, historical character of the nightlife district. It’s a unique urban scene where tradition and reality coexist.
