Odawara Walk to Itabashi Jizodo via Historic Tokaido Route – Kanagawa Japan Travel 4K
In Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, the pale pink of early-blooming cherry blossoms, translucent in the spring sunlight, cast soft shadows on the cold asphalt. The hustle and bustle of the old Tokaido road, once trodden by countless straw sandals, has long since subsided, and now only a gentle sea breeze blows through. However, looking up at the decaying stone steps hidden beside the modern Hakone Hospital, one can see the Hachiman Shrine quietly lurking, silently supporting the same sky that Edo travelers once saw. The wind caressing the stone monument marking the sacred site where Nichiren Shonin had a vision of the distant Boso Peninsula carried a hint of salt in the air. The road has gradually become completely integrated into people’s daily lives, and the innocent voices of children echo through the grounds of the Itabashi Jizo Hall. The Jizo statues that have sat here since 1569 gently watch over the trajectory of thrown balls with narrowed eyes. In this town, the boundary between prayer and daily life is terribly blurred. At Jōkōji Temple, countless windmills turn with a dry, humming sound, seemingly dissolving heartfelt wishes into the sky. Beside Ryōkakuin Temple, which retains the dignity of Shugendō (mountain asceticism), the daily routine of a nursery school unfolds calmly. Suddenly, I find myself standing still before a white paper streamer that has fallen at my feet. Beyond the boundary someone accidentally broke, I feel the unseen presence of countless years of history quietly pulsating in the depths of this town that has weathered numerous earthquakes.
