Sumpu Castle Park: Boat Tour, Tea House & Shizuoka Unagi

This video documents our journey to Sumpu Castle Park in Shizuoka, Japan.

Sumpu Castle Park🏯
Sumpu Castle Park, located in the heart of Shizuoka City, occupies the historic site of the former residence and retirement seat of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo Shogunate. Originally constructed in 1585, the castle served as a pivotal political center during the early 17th century before the main structures were destroyed by fire and later dismantled during the Meiji Restoration. Today, the park is a premier cultural destination featuring meticulously reconstructed landmarks, including the Higashi Gomon (East Gate), the Tatsumi Yagura (an L-shaped corner turret), and the Hitsujisaru Yagura. Visitors can also explore the Momijiyama Garden, a traditional Japanese landscape garden representing regional scenery such as Mt. Fuji and Shizuoka’s tea plantations. Conveniently situated approximately a 15-minute walk from JR Shizuoka Station, the park serves as a serene public space that blends archaeological significance with seasonal beauty, particularly during the spring cherry blossom season.

Access to Sumpu Castle Park is generally free of charge; however, specific fees apply to enter the reconstructed historical facilities and the traditional garden. Admission is required for the Higashi Gomon and Tatsumi Yagura, the Hitsujisaru Yagura, and the Momijiyama Garden.

For visitors planning to view all areas, a combined “Common Pass” is available for 360 yen for adults , providing a discounted rate for access to all three main attractions. Additionally, Momijiyama Garden offers a tea room service where guests can enjoy Japanese tea and seasonal sweets for an additional fee, usually ranging from 500 to 800 yen.

Aoi Bune🚤
The Aoi Bune is a traditional sightseeing boat that navigates the inner moat of Sumpu Castle in Shizuoka City. This experience offers passengers a unique perspective of the castle’s stone walls and the surrounding park landscape from the water. The boats are designed to reflect the historical atmosphere of the Edo period, providing a tranquil journey that highlights the seasonal changes of the area, particularly the cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn foliage.

The boat tour lasts approximately 40 minutes. Boarding takes place at a dedicated pier near the Higashi Gomon (East Gate). Tickets are priced at 1,200 yen for adults during the regular season, and 800 yen for December through February. This attraction serves as a peaceful way to explore the archaeological heritage of the Tokugawa Ieyasu era while enjoying the natural environment of the city center.
