Nestled in the heart of the shitamachi (old downtown) district, the hotel sits just 1–2 minutes on foot from Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine, one of Tokyo’s most historic shrines founded in the early Edo period. Known as “Fukagawa Hachimangu,” it is recognized as the birthplace of kanjin-sumo (organized sumo), features a stunning golden mikoshi (portable shrine) on display year-round, and is the historic site connected to Ino Tadataka, the man who mapped Japan at the age of 50. The shrine’s 400th anniversary celebrations are planned for 2027.

The room features an in-room Toshiba washing machine, ReFa hair dryer, ReFa shower head, De’Longhi kettle, 43-inch TV, air purifier, and microwave — everything designed for an extended, home-like stay. In the evening, I dined at Tomioka Icchome no Yuhi, a hidden gem serving exquisite seasonal Japanese cuisine. The next morning brought a visit to the shrine for a goshuin (temple seal) and a beautiful breakfast at a café along the approach path.
