Hanoi Art Museums & Galleries Tour | 48-hour Vietnam Contemporary Art trip

This is a short trip to Hanoi to explore Northern Vietnam’s rich art scene, featuring national masterpieces, private collections, and local contemporary galleries.

In this episode, I balance a quick trip with a deep dive into Hanoi’s vibrant fine arts landscape. We start at a hidden private museum owned by artist Van Duong Thanh near West Lake, exploring works ranging from traditional Vietnamese lacquer to bold oil paintings, as well as intimate works by modern masters Bui Xuan Phai and Nguyen Tu Nghiem.
Next, we spend the morning at the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts, housed in a stunning 1930s French colonial building. I guide you through its extensive collection:
First Floor: Ancient Dong Son bronze drums, Buddhist sculptures, and intricate Cham Pa stone carvings.
Second Floor: Wooden religious statues from the Le and Nguyen eras, including the magnificent Guanyin with a thousand hands and eyes, alongside early 20th-century European oil blends.
Third Floor: Moving 20th-century lacquer masterpieces and a beautiful collection of traditional Vietnamese silk paintings.

To capture the full local experience, I also take a break to enjoy authentic local foods like Phở, Eel vermicelli (Miến Lươn), West Lake Shrimp Cake (Bánh Tôm Hồ Tây), and midnight ice cream at the legendary Kem Tràng Tiền.

We finish the tour by visiting two contemporary art spaces tucked inside century-old French villas: Art 30 (featuring the exhibition “Hội Hè Miên Man”) and the highly influential Manzi art space.
