SAFFRON WALDEN: The Medieval Town Built on the World’s Most Expensive Spice

Welcome to our latest journey through England’s most enchanting corners!
Today, we are wandering through the timber-framed streets of Saffron Walden, a market town built on the world’s most expensive spice. If you’ve been looking for a destination that perfectly balances medieval charm with vibrant local culture, Saffron Walden is the place you’ve been dreaming of. From its colourful pargeted houses to the ruins of an ancient castle, there is a discovery waiting around every corner. Join us as we uncover why Saffron Walden remains one of the crown jewels of Essex.

The history of this town is as colourful as its buildings. Originally known simply as Walden, the town gained its aromatic prefix during the 15th and 16th centuries. This was the era of the Saffron Crocus, or Crocus sativus. The town became the English epicentre for cultivating this precious spice, used for everything from medicinal potions and expensive dyes to flavouring the food of royalty. As you walk through the Market Square today, you are walking the same paths where wealthy wool and saffron merchants traded centuries ago. The town’s wealth during the Middle Ages is still visible in the sheer scale of St. Mary the Virgin, the largest parish church in Essex. Even the earth itself holds secrets here; the town is home to a turf maze, one of only a few remaining in England, believed to be over 800 years old.

If you’re a fan of slow travel, this location is your sanctuary. The architecture is world-famous for pargeting, which is a decorative plasterwork found on the exterior of houses. The Old Sun Inn is a stunning example that will have you reaching for your camera every five seconds. For nature lovers, Bridge End Garden is a restored Victorian masterpiece featuring a wonderful hedge maze, a sunken garden, and a rose garden that smells like heaven in the summer months. Just on the outskirts lies Audley End House, one of England’s finest stately homes, offering a peek into Victorian life for both the elite and their servants. Finally, the local market pulse is unbeatable; these markets have been running since 1141. Whether you want artisan bread, antiques, or fresh local produce, the atmosphere is electric and authentically British.

  2. I bought my first house in Saffron Walden and briefly lived there for a couple of years. It was nowhere near as desirable as it is today back in the late 70s, early 80s. To be honest, I had no idea about half the things these gentlemen have covered in their video. Perhaps I go back there and spend a day walking around.

  3. Magnificent video with incredible beauty & exotic charm 😍 The joy & peace you both share through your wonderful videos is a kind of magical escape to a exceptional world & I'm loving this transition ❤ the town, houses, church, streets, gardens etc are phenomenal. Thank u Simon & Will 😊
