Walking Around Omiya Station, Kyoto: A Neighborhood That Time Forgot

I originally wanted to travel toward the Tohoku region, but due to recent news about bear sightings, I decided to change direction and head west instead. The final destination of this journey is planned to be Okayama Prefecture.

Traveling from Mie through Shiga, I arrived in Kyoto. When you hear “Omiya Station,” many people in the Kanto area might think of the major station in Saitama, but in Kansai, Omiya Station refers to this one in Kyoto. Some of you may have used it when transferring to the Keifuku Arashiyama Line on the way to Arashiyama.

Personally, I used to come here regularly about 30 years ago during my years as a student preparing for university entrance exams. I was surprised by how little the area around the station has changed. Lotteria (now rebranded as Zetteria) and McDonald’s are still in the same locations, bringing back many old memories.

While the station area and Shijo Street are lively, walking a bit farther to Sanjo Street reveals a large covered shopping arcade. Compared to how much the Kawaramachi and Karasuma areas have changed, it’s nice to see that the area around Omiya Station has remained mostly the same.
