China–Myanmar Border’s Most UNTOUCHED Tea Village (Jingmai Mountain, Yunnan🇨🇳)

Jingmai Mountain (景迈山) rises along the southern edge of Yunnan, near the borderlands where China gradually blends into mainland Southeast Asia. Known as one of the world’s oldest cultivated tea landscapes, the mountain hosts an extraordinary cultural ecosystem shaped by forests, villages, and ancient tea trees. In 2023, the Cultural Landscape of Old Tea Forests of Jingmai Mountain in Pu’er (普洱景迈山古茶林文化景观) was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing not just the tea itself but the centuries-old relationship between people and landscape.

Unlike industrial plantations, tea here grows within a semi-wild forest environment. Towering old trees rise among bamboo, moss, and subtropical vegetation, forming what locals call “tea forests.” Many of these trees are hundreds of years old, producing leaves used for the renowned Pu’er tea (普洱茶). The cultivation philosophy emphasizes coexistence: farmers manage the forest lightly rather than replacing it, allowing biodiversity and agriculture to thrive together.

The surrounding villages—home mainly to the Dai people (傣族) and the Bulang people (布朗族)—maintain a lifestyle closely tied to tea. Wooden stilt houses sit beneath palms, temple roofs gleam in humid air, and the scent of drying leaves drifts through courtyards. In places like Wengji Village (翁基村) and Nuogan Village (糯干村), traditional architecture and customs remain remarkably intact.

Geographically, Jingmai lies within the basin of the Lancang River (澜沧江)—the upper Mekong. Warm monsoon air, frequent mist, and fertile soils create ideal tea-growing conditions. In early mornings the mountain often disappears beneath clouds, with temple roofs and ancient tea trees emerging slowly from the fog.

Yet Jingmai Mountain is about more than tea. It represents a rare landscape where agriculture, ecology, and culture evolved together over generations. Walking beneath the shaded canopy of ancient tea forests, hearing insects and distant temple bells, it becomes clear that Jingmai’s value lies not only in the leaves harvested each spring—but in the quiet continuity of a way of life shaped by the mountain itself.
