⁴ᴷ Kumamoto: Amakusa City (熊本県: 天草市) – Japan Walking Tour (March, 2026)

I’ve decided to head west in search of warmer weather and travel all the way around Kyushu. After driving to Osaka and taking the ferry to Shin-Moji, I’m continuing my journey through the island.

From Kumamoto, I traveled through Aso and crossed the sea to reach Amakusa. There is a distinct, mysterious aura to this land that’s hard to put into words. Passing by the “Largest Statue of Amakusa Shiro,” I found myself reflecting on the history of the Shimabara Rebellion. Having visited Shimabara a few years ago, crossing over to Amakusa has been a long-held dream of mine.

Since Amakusa City has no railway stations, I began my walk from the City Hall. While the shopping district felt quiet and somewhat faded, the sight of local students laughing and hanging out here and there was truly heartwarming. It was a peaceful walk after sunset, where the weight of history meets the lively energy of the next generation.
