⁴ᴷ Kumamoto: Hitoyoshi Station (熊本県: 人吉駅) – Japan Walking Tour (March, 2026)
I’ve decided to head west in search of warmer weather and travel all the way around Kyushu. After driving to Osaka and taking the ferry to Shin-Moji, I’m continuing my journey southward through the island.
Moving from Amakusa to Hitoyoshi City in southern Kumamoto, I witnessed the extensive reconstruction work still underway along the Kuma River. The constant stream of large dump trucks was a stark reminder of the devastating 2020 floods and the resilient spirit of the local recovery efforts.
By the time I reached Hitoyoshi Station, the area was wrapped in a quiet, nostalgic atmosphere. On display near the station was the “SL Hitoyoshi,” which I was saddened to learn had retired in 2024. I wish I could have seen it in motion, but even in its stillness, it added a poignant touch to this walk after sunset, where the whispers of history and the sound of the river meet.
