The Snowiest Place in Japan (Hokkaido)

In this travel documentary we explore Japan’s northern frontier — from the city of Sapporo to the island’s volcanic landscapes and legendary powder snow.

We begin in Sapporo, visiting Odori Park, the Sapporo TV Tower, Sapporo Clock Tower, the Red Brick Government Building, Hokkaido University, and the nightlife district of Susukino. Along the way we experience the Sapporo Snow Festival, ride the Mount Moiwa Ropeway, and try local food at Nijo Market, Ramen Alley, the Sapporo Beer Museum, and Shiroi Koibito Park.

Next we head to the historic port city of Otaru, known for the Otaru Canal, Sakaimachi Street, the Otaru Music Box Museum, and views from Mount Tengu.

Then it’s time for Japow powder skiing at Rusutsu Resort, with views of Mount Yotei.

Beyond the cities, Hokkaido reveals its dramatic nature at Lake Toya, Showa Shinzan, and Mount Usu, followed by the hot spring town of Noboribetsu, home to Jigokudani (Hell Valley), the Bear Park, and Marine Park Nixe.

We also visit Shiraoi’s Upopoy Ainu Museum to learn about Hokkaido’s indigenous culture, and finish in the port city of Muroran, overlooking the Pacific Ocean from Cape Chikyu and the Hakucho Bridge.

From deep snow and skiing to volcanoes, seafood, and history — Hokkaido is one of Japan’s most fascinating regions.

  7. 9:09 I live in Saskatchewan Canada. The university of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon has cows that stay on the property. The university is located completely in the city, thousands of people drive by the cows daily when they’re out grazing in the summer. In winter they’re inside their barn
