⁴ᴷ Fukuoka: Iizuka Station (福岡県: 飯塚駅) – Japan Walking Tour (March, 2026)

I’ve decided to head west in search of warmer weather and travel all the way around Kyushu. After driving to Osaka and taking the ferry to Shin-Moji, my first stop on land is Iizuka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. With a population of 120,000, it’s the fourth largest city in the prefecture and was once the heart of the Chikuho Coalfield.

Iizuka Station is currently undergoing a massive redevelopment, and the temporary station building is a sight in itself. The town center is located about a kilometer from the station, featuring a grand and surprisingly luxurious shopping arcade.

As a former post town along the historic Nagasaki Kaido, the city clearly has deep roots, but many shops now bear “For Lease” or “For Sale” signs. Walking through the quiet arcade and the adjacent entertainment district, I felt the poignant contrast between its storied past and the quiet reality of the present during this walk after sunset.
