[Introduction]
Takanawa Gateway Station is one of Tokyo’s newest and most innovative railway stations, located in Minato City between Shinagawa and Tamachi on the JR Yamanote Line. It officially opened in 2020 as part of a large-scale urban redevelopment project.
Designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the station features a striking wooden roof inspired by traditional Japanese origami. Natural light fills the spacious interior, creating a bright and open atmosphere that blends modern technology with traditional aesthetics.
The name “Gateway” symbolizes the area’s historical role as an entrance to Edo (old Tokyo). During the Edo period, Takanawa was home to one of the city’s checkpoints, serving as a gateway between Edo and the rest of Japan.
Today, the station is at the heart of the “Global Gateway Shinagawa” redevelopment project. The surrounding area is being transformed into a smart city district with offices, hotels, residences, and cultural facilities. Advanced technologies such as robotics, AI, and mobility innovations are being tested and introduced here.
