I have just disembarked P&O’s Iona, and I am staying at the Hotel Indigo in London for a couple of days to do some sight seeing before heading home.
I booked the Inner Circle Access Of Stonehenge Including Bath And Lacock Day Tour From London, and we met at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel London Kensington. (https://www.viator.com/tours/London/Private-Viewing-of-Stonehenge-including-Bath-and-Lacock/d737-2452T2)
As indicated, we met at the hotel at about 11am, and were told the ride was about 2 hours to Bath, and that the toilets on the bus were broken. Other than that, it was a comfortable bus ride.
Our first stop was the Roman Baths in Bath, UK. Our guide Nicholas led us from the square in through the town and to the site of the Roman Baths. There is a museum built around them, and swimming in them is not allowed.
We were led in to the group entrance line, and waited while Nicholas went in and made our arrangements. Then we were allowed in and able to pick up our complimentary listening devices.
You start at the top level of the baths and there was a person playing live music we could hear from the square between the Abbey and the Baths buildings. It lent a nice ambiance. The baths are fed by natural springs, and are said to have healing properties.
Along with the baths, the museum has some fine archeological pieces to see. I really enjoyed seeing this town and the baths.
Then it was off to Stonehenge (I know I have the order wrong in the video). With our inner circle access, we were first brought to the visitor’s center and waited while Nicholas made arrangements. We were able to go through the line as a group and have some time in the village on the back half of the center. There was also a standing stone on its side to show you how it may have been transported and to give you some idea of the scale. You cannot see Stonehenge really from the center, it is a good way up the trek still.
Our shuttle was brought around and we boarded as a group again. It was near closing for the center, and there were basically just groups left by the time we got there. Where the shuttle parked, you could see the road that runs closest to Stonehenge, and that is also where people can go to see the site if they don’t have inner circle access. But it is far away and the site looks small—you’d have to have some good binoculars and zoom lenses to get footage from there.
We walked up a long track to get to the site from where our bus dropped us. We were told by the Center’s guide to leave our bags behind on the path as they weren’t allowed inside the circle. The ground was soft from recent rains, but not too muddy, thankfully. The guide was clear that we were not to touch the stones because they want to preserve the moss and lichen that grow on them, and people touching it kills it off. This includes stones that are half buried in the ground where they fell, so we had to watch our step.
Walking through the site, though, was so amazing. The sense of history when you think about how long ago this was built and what a massive undertaking it must have been for the people of the time is impressive.
We had about half an hour before the sky opened up and just started POURING rain. When it had been going on for a bit and I could tell it wasn’t going to let up anytime soon, I gathered my gear and headed back to the bus. As it was, I got soaked by the time I made it back.
We then headed to the village of Lacock, which is arguably the most video/photographed town in the UK due to its standing as a well preserved town from hundreds of years ago. Nicholas pointed out several houses that had been featured in the Harry Potter series. After a walk around the town, we stopped for food at The Red Lion pub, our orders had been taken on the bus and called in before hand, and the food was tasty.
