I nativi americani ce li siamo sempre immaginati in sella ad un cavallo al galoppo in praterie sterminate, adornati con costumi tradizionali e immersi in rituali sacri attorno ad un fuoco acceso tra le tipì.
Ma la loro realtà è molto diversa. Intere generazioni cancellate con brutalità da colonizzatori bianchi venuti dal vecchio continente, che hanno prima soppresso le loro identità e poi rinchiuso ciò che ne rimaneva in pezzi di terra isolati: le riserve, luoghi in cui oggi regnano l’abuso di sostanze, la disoccupazione e la povertà.
Ma anche in mezzo alle macerie di un passato di cui si sente solo l’eco, ci sono persone che non si sono arrese e ribadiscono con fierezza le loro origini, lottando per migliorare le vite delle loro comunità.
Siamo entrati nella riserva Lakota di Pine Ridge per cercare la risposta ad una grande domanda: che cos’è la felicità per gli ultimi nativi americani?

When you reference life expectancy 47 and third word country i know for sure u comparing to Africa .. fyi “Africa's life expectancy is around 64 years” per WHO . and people death and expiration is determined by god not whether in first world or 3rd world. 🌎 good documentary tho.
Docs like this are embarrassing especially for us who are actually working and going to school and making a life for our kids, people watch docs like this and look down on all indigenous people. Causes people to disrespect and act racist towards natives.

People watch videos like this n think they understand Pine Ridge, but what you see on a camera is only a small piece of the truth.
Rez life isn’t just poverty. It’s history, systems, broken treaties, stolen land, boarding schools, addiction, trauma passed down through generations things that didn’t happen by accident.
But what doesn’t get shown enough is the other side.
The aunties holding families together.
The kids with big dreams even when they got nothing.
The jokes, the music, the culture, the ceremonies, the way people still share their last plate of food.
We’re not just statistics or sad stories for documentaries.
We’re nations that survived everything meant to erase us.
Pine Ridge isn’t just “the poorest place in America.”
It’s one of the most resilient places in America.
Don’t just watch this like it’s entertainment.
Learn the history. Respect the people. Support Native communities directly.
Rez life is hard, yeah.

You will be amazed how common the Australian indigenous aboriginal community and the American natives have very similar lives. Alcoholism is such a big problem with both cultures. They are beautiful people when sober but once they are drunk it’s like a whole new beast comes out. Unfortunately change has to start with THEM. The elders aren’t being listened to anymore- the youth are running wild
There is no way to save them. 0 education. 0 aspirations to get an education. 0 family structure. It’s a vicious cycle. That woman has 5 kids and she should’ve never had one. Sad. The ones that do have the willpower and determination leave as soon as they are educated or get a good job and you can’t blame them

The only groups in the US I have total sympathy and respect for are native Americans and combat veterans.
This is not a prison camp. Every single person on this reservation is free to leave whenever they want to. The fact is that they get free subsidies and housing on the Rez so they choose not to leave. Basic laziness with addiction to alcohol and drugs. Those addictions are by choice. I served in the Navy in 1980 with a full blood Sioux named Ghost Dog. He chose not to drink a drop.

28:39 So sad to see that his is so true. My Native American studies class I took in college was eye opening and heartbreaking. When we are young we are taught that the genocide of Native Americans was so long ago and that everything is great now. When in realty it is not. Not to mention that they don't even teach us about the genocide. They sugar coat it and they just say they were "displaced", moved to good land. When we all know that is not realty. I understand elementary kids not being taught this but high school kids are old enough to understand.
The best thing to do is get off the rez, then make something of yourself so you can further your people and tribe. Natives are sovereign and don’t have the same rules as the American people. Get off the res and fix it. The only way natives are ever gonna get ahead. But they think government handouts are better than hard work to preserve themselves. I am Native American. I have seen what can happen if you leave the rez.
They bring up past historical battles and wounds but I cant feel sorry for the current situation. Alcohol abuse and use is a choice. Drug abuse is a choice. Criminality is a choice mostly. The plight of these folks is self induced.
These folks have health care. They have free education and opportunities others simply don't have. They also recieve income just as tribal members.
Now look at their properties. Junk and garbage and torn up homes the taxpayer has had built for them. Poverty or status doesnt mean you need to livenon that filth. Thats a choice.
Personally ive got plenty of problems. I live in poverty and dont have much but I'm resolved not to be a criminal. Im not going to drink or steal or take illicit substances and Im going to live clean. Its a choice.

I don't know about any of the rate reservations next to anybody else.But all the states around me , marijuana is legalized in the Reservations are the one selling it And they have lines out the door that they also saw gas on their reservation , and they make a lot of money
