佐和山城 琵琶湖と彦根城を望む石田三成の居城 滋賀県 Sawayama Castle 2025

Today, I’m heading to Sawayama Castle in Shiga Prefecture. Sawayama Castle is famous for being the castle’s former owner, Ishida Mitsunari. I’m heading to Hikone on the Biwako Line. Sawayama Castle is visible from Hikone Station. There’s a large poster of Ishida Mitsunari hanging at the station. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the station to the entrance to Sawayama Castle. After the Battle of Odawara, Sawayama Castle was remodeled into a modern castle by Ishida Mitsunari. Ishida Mitsunari’s residence is believed to have been located around here. There’s a model of the castle tower. In the background, you can see a sign for the ruins of Sawayama Castle. After the Battle of Sekigahara, Ii Naomasa entered Sawayama Castle. However, the castle was later abandoned when Hikone Castle was built. This is Seiryoji Temple, the family temple of the Ii family. Finally, I’ve reached the entrance to the castle. There’s a Kannon statue and a stone monument commemorating the souls of Ishida Mitsunari. Behind them is a bronze statue of Ishida Mitsunari. We proceed through the grounds of Ryutanji Temple. We pass through the Sanmon Gate. We walk beside the Kannon Hall. I hope we don’t encounter any wild monkeys. We’ve entered the hiking trail. The slope continues steeply. This is a cut-through marked on old maps as “Kamozaka Dori Okan.” This is the remains of a saltpeter tower. This is the lower part of the Nishinomaru, and this area appears to be the upper part of the Nishinomaru. There is a vertical moat. We’re almost to the Honmaru. We’ve arrived at the Honmaru. Sawayama is 233 meters above sea level. We also look toward Lake Biwa. Hikone Castle is also clearly visible. The Honmaru once had a castle tower base and a five-story castle tower. Many of the buildings appear to have been repurposed for Hikone Castle, Seiryoji Temple, and Ryutanji Temple at the foot of the mountain. It seems that much of Sawayama Castle’s stone walls were also used in the construction of Hikone Castle. There seem to be some traces of stone walls below, so we take a look. There are stones that appear to be traces of stone walls. Thank you for watching.
