My goodness, I tripped and fell, it was so sharp! Those bull horns … We’ve all probably heard of Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, the world’s largest Miao settlement. Located about 30 kilometers away in Leishan County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province, it’s known as the center of Miao culture. This is probably the earliest place in the country to celebrate the New Year. The Miao New Year is Leishan County’s most important annual festival, with various celebrations. In November 2025, I visited Leishan County in Qiandongnan, Guizhou. In previous episodes, we witnessed the Miao New Year’s parade, a grand feast of Miao cuisine, and a massive long table banquet, hailed as a “mobile intangible cultural heritage museum.” In this episode, join me to watch a unique rural bullfighting competition during a Miao New Year celebration. Everyone arrived early; there are people selling benches. The loudspeaker is announcing that gambling outside the bullfighting are strictly prohibited. Civilized viewing is encouraged. Fried rice, fried noodles, fried rice noodles , cold noodles, rice… Before, when I watched bullfighting in the Liangshan area, I couldn’t understand a word because they were speaking Yi language. But here, I can understand a little bit of their dialect. Look, there are a few bulls in the backcourt. There ‘s a temporary gate I want to take a picture of. I don’t remember. Wow, another surprise! There’s an auntie basketball game going on over there. It’s the Datang Scenic Area Auntie Basketball Game. Little Cold Noodles Black Hawk , hey brother, how old is our bull? It’s about four or five years old, maybe six. Oh, five years old. How much does it weigh? 860 kilograms . 860 kilograms. Oh, how much is the highest prize? The highest prize is 20,000 yuan (about 2,850 US dollars). Go go go go! Hello! One, two, three. The alternate bulls are all quite far apart , otherwise they’ll fight. Next up is Little Cold Noodles Black Hawk. Best wishes! In the bullring, we can see that these bulls are water buffaloes sent by various villages. In the episode about Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, we learned in the Miao Museum that the bull is a symbol of the Miao people. The totem is deeply revered for the bull, which is seen as a symbol of diligence, strength, and heroism. Bullfighting, a tradition with thousands of years of history in Miao villages, is not only entertainment but also a way to strengthen relationships between relatives and villagers. The winning bull is called the Bull King , Bull God, and Bull Saint , bringing honor to the entire village. Suddenly, many staff members came down to the arena.
It seems the two bulls are locked in a stalemate, unable to determine a winner. Oh dear, what are these people doing, constantly gathering around ? Oh dear, Little Cold Eagle has fled in defeat . It’s alright, he tried his best; though he lost, he’s still honorable . Look, his head is covered in mud! I blessed you, so even when you lost, I still feel sorry for you . People are strange; if you’ve never met someone, it doesn’t matter who wins or loses. But if you’ve had a connection with someone, you hope they can win. Next up is number 88. Dad, number 88 , his Chinese name is Bull Field B. Bull Field B lost! The bull that flees first after a confrontation is declared the loser. This is the bull that just came down from the arena… The cows even need to be bathed with mineral water. Wow, it looks painful just looking at it ! (sound of impact) These cows!
The little cold noodle’s head is pinned to the ground by another opponent. Buy a bottle of this for 5 yuan! Then I saw this called Acaprol powder . It’s applied to the cow’s wound after it’s been injured, and it has an analgesic effect . It relieves moderate pain such as headaches, joint pain, and migraines . How much is the prize money for this first prize? The cows in front of me aren’t the water buffaloes my family used for plowing fields when I was a child; they’re specially raised for bullfighting. Bullfighting is very common in Guizhou , especially in the Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Qiandongnan. It ‘s concentrated in the Miao and Dong ethnic minority areas of Kaili, Leishan, Congjiang, Rongjiang, Taijiang, Danzhai, and Jianhe counties. Many festivals and important gatherings in this region, such as the Miao New Year , the Drum Festival , and the Lusheng Festival, include bullfighting activities . In the past, bullfighting mainly served the purpose of sacrifice, prayer, and village unity. Now, with the development of Guizhou’s “village-based” tourism (Village-Based Tourism)… The popularity of bullfighting in villages is growing, and cultural tourism is also booming. Local governments regard bullfighting as an important resource for “culture + tourism.” Bullfighting has gradually moved from a folk competition to a standardized and industrialized form, empowering festival brands and combining cattle breeding, competitions, catering, and cultural and creative industries to form an increasingly complete cultural tourism industry chain. Through these bullfighting competitions, tourists are constantly being attracted . In Guizhou, bullfighting has gradually moved from a village festival competition to a more economically promising cultural tourism brand. First, second , third, and fourth place in the basketball competition. The first place winner has 1500 RMB. It’s officially starting ! Haha, Auntie Basketball is a form of basketball in Leishan County, Qiandongnan Prefecture. It’s a no-rules basketball game. The “No Rules” basketball game is currently the most popular in Leishan County. We’re promoting it to showcase our Miao culture . They don’t usually play basketball. After the “Village Basketball” in Rongjiang County became popular, many counties in southeastern Guizhou also wanted to create their own basketball competition platforms to boost local tourism. There were almost no spectators at the court . Okay, let’s begin ! Ah, this is fun! This is no rules , no traveling! It’s my first time seeing a game like this, so interesting! Stand still! That’s a foul ! Two free throws! Good balls ! Too bad, two minutes isn’t too short. We can still try to steal the ball after the free throws . Good ball! Move aside ! Good ball! Aunt Xinqiao’s game! Next time it’s our turn! Which team are you from, you rascals? This guy runs fast and shoots accurately. Although the coach is arranging his lineup, it’s like a basketball game nearby, or a bullfight in the distance. Buying nanmu wood for 10 yuan a piece . This used to be an ordinary Miao village. But because a scenic area called Datang Jincang was built nearby, right behind the village , the villagers have built more and more buildings. In the future, these will likely become guesthouses, hotels , inns , and restaurants . This village is also located at the foot of the mountain. There’s a small pond in the courtyard . There ‘s a stone tablet here, indicating the geological disaster hazard and safe escape directions. Because, ah, many villages in Leishan County… The villagers at the foot of this hillside all seem to have a sign that says “Fire Safety Household.” The inspection was on October 4th, 2025. It seems there’s a monthly routine fire safety inspection by the relevant departments. Hello, aren’t you going to watch the basketball game ? No, no, no, haha! I want pig’s feet! That grandma from earlier, her way of speaking was quite old-fashioned; she said “watching bullfighting, ” not “bullfighting .” The score is very close, 19:20. When I first arrived, there were almost no spectators at the sidelines. The spectators are now in overtime. At first, I thought it was just a casual game , not a serious one, because it’s an informal basketball game, and everyone was just playing casually. But while the game was playing, I noticed that the ladies from each village were really serious. And this basketball game had the most laughter I’ve ever seen; the sidelines were filled with cheers and laughter , and almost everyone was laughing non-stop. The score was 23-23 . Auntie went out, good shot, 2 points , leading by 2 points again! There were 44 seconds left, Auntie was going out too. Time’s up! Congratulations to our Xinqiao Auntie for winning by 2 points! Wow , so much fun! Next up is the Xiahe Village team , the host team! The village we just visited is Xiahe Village in Datang Township . Their women’s basketball team is amazing; they won the championship in the 2023 Miao New Year Basketball League ! The players in those rose-red uniforms are from Xiahe Village. They’re warming up now . Wow! The first shot went in! So strong! The host team is amazing! Using a straw cake-shaped straw… oh my god, I tripped and fell ! The opponent’s all gone ! It’s your turn! Zhangpai (cow’s name) lost! What’s the purpose of this spray? Anti-inflammatory. Ah, anti-inflammatory! This bull, called Qianhu Team, looks like a champion. The staff are giving it a bath to cool it down and spraying it with anti- inflammatory spray . Why do you give a bull a bath after a fight ? To cool it down. They also give the bull rice wine. Because of the rice wine, the bull is a little dizzy, so it might not be as sensitive to pain . (Drinking rice wine) It should also give the bull a more wild and untamed feel. Next up is Qianhu Team. He seems to have been to this bullring many times. When I first came here to watch bullfighting, I wasn’t particularly interested, but seeing… As you gradually learn more and more, you become increasingly immersed in it, and the more you watch, the more beautiful it becomes—that’s the feeling . And the more immersed you are, the more you can feel the power of this bull, the explosive force of a living, breathing creature. They sell painkillers, medicine for falls and injuries , glucose to replenish energy, and even the bull-leading rope. This is a new arena; this is the first bullfighting competition held here. This bull continues to be given water (rice wine). I remember the thousand-household warrior; he’s been to the battlefield many times. From the beginning, it’s been an elimination tournament —losers are eliminated, winners advance— so he’s able to repeatedly enter the arena. That’s an invincible bull. Look at this brown drink, that’s local rice wine. Look how much this bull drank today! Haha, look how many people are surrounding this bull to take care of it , or rather, to manage it—some are carrying water, some are giving it medicine, some are leading it, some are spraying it, and so on. The competition started at 2 PM , and it lasted for more than three hours. The whistle blew, and the competition began . After a short standoff, they ran away. They were locked in a stalemate for five minutes without a winner. The staff came down and separated them. Just now, you saw the staff on both sides pulling the bull’s hind legs backward because… If the two cows haven’t decided a winner by the time it’s time (5 minutes), they’ll be separated and fight other cows to determine the winner. Otherwise, if they remain deadlocked , it might waste time. So, the two finalists have qualified. I feel a little nervous now. I don’t know why, but the anticipation and excitement of the whole arena is reaching its most thrilling moment. My feelings right now are truly mixed. First, one cow enters, and then after that cow is ready, the other cow is brought in through the same door. The battle is about to begin! It seems these bulls have been fighting all afternoon. While they might not be covered in wounds , they’re certainly exhausted. Those still on the battlefield are top-tier bulls, the strongest of the bunch, as
the competition has entered its latter stages, possibly nearing the finals. The host team and the Thousand-Household War God team … if I look closely at these bulls, they’re bleeding, with red wounds on their foreheads . You can still feel the brutality of bullfighting. The staff came down and slowly approached . What does that mean? The stalemate has almost ended… If a winner can’t be decided in 5 minutes, then we’ll have to pause the match and see if a winner can be determined within 5 minutes. Instead, we’ll tie a rope to one of the cow’s hind legs and pull them apart. Okay, one of the finalists is entering the arena! Wow, I’m so excited , nervous, and looking forward to it all. It’s going to be pretty bloody, but how can I put it? It’s come to this point, I really want to know the result. This is another finalist, from the Qianhu team . His forehead is covered with a straw mat. My god, another bloody match is about to begin! Wow, it sounds so painful! Another 200 yuan! I’ll say , a big impact, a big impact on the main… The organizers are giving out 200 yuan as a reward. They must have bumped into each other more than ten times! 200 yuan for every bump (about $28)! That’s quite a generous reward from the organizers! Yes, it’s reached a stalemate! My heart is in my throat! Look, it’s almost dark, and no one has left. You can hear the crashing sounds from afar , along with the low, rough breathing of the bulls. No matter who wins or loses, they’ve defeated so many opponents to get this far. I’ve been holding my breath, I’ve even forgotten how to breathe, you know? It’s so intense! Wow, they just knocked down another bull! The Qianhu team is too strong! I just… The camera showed your wound , but you remained undeterred! You’re so strong! He just grabbed another bull by the leg and knocked it down! I watched all day! It was the first time I’d ever seen anything like it! Wow, I’m really excited! Friends, if you have the chance, win! Wow! Team Qianhu won! Look! Wow! The whole arena is buzzing with boos! Team Qianhu won by skill! This victory has nothing to do with me , but I’m still quite excited. I don’t know why, but my heart is racing. I’ve seen many bullfights, even quite a few in the Liangshan Mountains , but this is the one with the biggest emotional rollercoaster. Because of this… One reason might be because I watched the whole thing. His teammates seemed very proud of him, their faces beaming with smiles. We were happy for the first place winner and felt sorry for the second. It was like the saying, ” Why did fate create both Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang?” That’s how competitions are—a zero-sum game . This was my first time entering this arena, a newly discovered one . From now on, a bullfighting competition will be held here every year. The staff upstairs, if they want to come down, they’ll be wrapped in this white rope. Below, they should be awarding prizes and prize money. I wish this place all the best. I watched a free, exciting bullfighting competition with fireworks. This was the first Bullfighting Competition in Datang Township. The scenic area I mentioned earlier is the Datang Jincang Scenic Area. Because of the opening of this scenic area, the surrounding villages have also been boosted. I still feel a bit unsatisfied, haha. Maybe I’m a little hungry now, a bit weak in my limbs. The main road has now become a market of small stalls. Let’s see how to get back to Leishan County.
