In this video. We are road tripping all over Crete on a mission to eat everything. I’m talking some of the best seafood I’ve ever had. Crazy beautiful views that don’t even feel real and cozy little village taverns still cooking the old school way. Honestly, this place is pure magic. Buckle up. We are eating our way through Crete. Buongiorno, guys! it’s Max Ginestra I’m in Crete, Greece. Today we’re going to be starting an amazing road trip around the island. We’re going to be visiting local villages, beaches. We’re going to be having some of the most delicious seafood. Visit local taverns.
Oh! You’ll be amazed even more than me. Let’s go. To start our day, we made it to a super legendary spot here in Chania, Bougatsa Iordanis. Since 1924. oh, this is an icon here in Chania. Look at this. The menu is very simple. Bougatsa only One with cream and one with cheese. We got the one with cheese because we already tried the one with cream. They make the bougatsa super fresh, constantly in the lab right next to us. And then that right on the front, they slice it, they weight it and they serve it to the customers. Look at this.
Look how flaky. Just with a little bit of sugar on top. Let’s go for it. It’s insanely warm. So cheesy. Nice and sour.
It’s a punch in the face. I absolutely love it. Super fresh. The pastry, the phyllo, is super thin, almost like paper thin and crispy. I love it. Mamma Mia.
It’s very good. And look at the cheese, it’s so creamy. It’s not warm. It’s hot. I think it just came out of the oven right now It’s so delicious. And I mean, look how many people this place is an institution. Look at the old sign over there, they framed it like a piece of art. This is a top place for sure. And after this, we start our road trip Now things are getting serious. Get ready for a seafood feast of your dreams. I will tell you everything from the start. Please. The smaller one. on the right side. You make it fried. All of the fish you can check by yourself by press it, check it, smell it, or whatever you like, if it’s fresh or not. All right. Oh, wow. A local fish from this area is called Scaros That’s the local fish in the same family of parrotfish. The red one is a female and the black one is a male. Beautiful!

Everything is fresh here except the big screams and my wife. All the others are fresh. I didn’t want to laugh. Oveer here we also have tuna. -Oh, nice.

Freshly caught every day. Except the two things I told you. What about the story with the octopus there? We dry it for two and half or three days. That’s the traditional way to dry octopus. We never boil the octopus Oh, all of the other taverns they make it soft by boiling it. Okay. So what happens if you boil the octopus? Yes, it’s more soft but all of taste is in the water. Here (drying the traditional way) the taste remains in the octopus. The octopus is an experience in this island. You convinced me. Which fish do you recommend? Let’s say it’s my first time here. An hour and a half by car. Look at the Cretan map. And this is where we are. Sfinari. We came right from here. And hour and a half. Thank you. We just received our super mega fresh grilled octopus. Look at this. Wow. Grilled on charcoal by the master and finished with the extra virgin olive oil that they make and parsley. My goodness, let’s get a piece. Oh, still piping hot. Buon appetito Nice. Meaty, chewy, smoky. And you can taste the sea. Mamma mia, you can taste the sea. Super fresh and got a nice crunchy outer layer. Got a nice bite to it. I understand the reason why they’re famous for it. Oh, wow, this is very nice. Insane. What amazes me is the freshness. Nikos, it is very good. Mamma mia! Super good, super good. Super nice! Can’t wait for the fish now. Here is the grilled fish. Please Oh my God, beautiful! Seasonal herbs. Olive oil and lemon For the fish? Yes Thank you very much. Our beautiful fish is here. We got the local fish called Scaros. This is the female one, nicely grilled. Then we go a tuna. Even this one super fresh, grilled. Just served with the lemon and olive oil. They also gave us some extra that you pour on top. We also got some greens just to make ourselves think that we are healthy. And let’s go for it. Okay, Max, this area have no many bones. Oh, that’s not your average fish. It has quite a lot of flavour. Nice, savoury, perfectly grilled. They poured some lemon, so it’s citrusy. Meaty. So far, not too bony. Okay, let’s use my hands. Oh, mamma mia. So you know what we do? Let’s do like this. Oh, the olive oil. Oh. Mamma mia, the olive oil. God bless the olive oil. It is very nice. And with the touch of lemon. Uff… It makes everything alive really. Now, on to the tuna. Oh, yeah. This is different. We all know tuna. Super meaty. Super meaty. Let’s go for it. Oh, yeah. The previous one was good. But the tuna… Maybe I have a soft spot for tuna. But this one is very good, super meaty, tender. This is like a steak. Oh, let’s do like this. Let’s pour the sauce all over. Beautiful! Let’s get some more. Wow. Look! Okay, even more sauce. It’s so satisfying. Are we joking? Super fresh! Mamma mia! And also, what I love is, how passionate and knowledgeable the owners are and super welcoming. So as soon as we arrived, they came outside to greet us. They welcomed us. They showed us them fresh catch of the day. They told us all about it. It was fantastic. You can really tell that they take a lot of pride in what they do. This is a place that has been running from generation to generation. They passed it down from
their father Fidias to their children. And maybe grandchildren. They keep the tradition alive. This is Creta, ladies and gentlemen. It doesn’t get any better than this. Almost forgot the greens. I love greens but in this case, we ordered it just to add some extra colour and, to make us feel better. Ooh! Oh, my gosh, amazing! A little bit bitter and with the lemon..wow! This has been boiled and sauteed in pan maybe with garlic. It’s really nice. I underestimated it. Do not underestimate veggies. Also, one more thing. They make their own wine. Barrel aged house white here. We tried it already. It is fantastic. So, this is cheers to you. Boom! It’s.. It’s definitely stronger than other whites that we had before, and, certainly tastes different, which is very, very good. Ragazzi, we just finished our lunch. Everything was absolutely delicious. Sherly can confirm Oh,even the veggies were super good. Eh, amore? So which fish was your favourite? The small one. Scaros, the local one. My favourite was the tuna. So, I liked both but the tuna.. Well, the octopus, we both can confirm was insane. We’ve just been given homemade Loukoumades with honey and cinnamon and sesame. Look at this! And of course, Raki. Buon appetito That’s what I needed. Sweet soft, fluffy, airy Mamma mia! Oh, what a meal! And the location is spectacular. We are in Sfinari beach, it is beautiful. Cheers. Alla salute! Wow, this is strong. Mamma mia! I’m on fire. This experience so far has been incredible. This road trip continues. We’re gonna go to other villages, to other taverns. It’s going to be epic. Yamas! And once again, the hospitality… I mean, Greek hospitality… Come on, second to none. After that amazing seafood feast Still, the weather is not the greatest. But we’re heading to Elafonisi which is one of the most popular and beautiful beaches in Crete. Wow, the road is fantastic around the mountains, hopefully the weather is not going to get worse. Because it opened up. So during lunch, it rained for around 10-15 minutes. But now it’s good. Okay, see you in Elafonisi. Ragazzi. We made it to Elafonisi beach. Mamma mia! Look at this beauty, amore. Look at that! There is a little island over there. So peaceful. All right, let’s take some time off, amore. Let’s do it. Let’s enjoy it just the two of us in peace. Ragazzi! We stopped by a mountain village
tavern on the side of the road. It’s beautiful. So peaceful. Look at the view. So.. mountains You got two beautiful churches. I don’t know if you can see, but there is the sea over there. The view is amazing. Super peaceful. We ordered a few dishes. Dakos which are like, like Cretan bruschetta. Then a local homemade pie, and then another dish that the owner told me that is the invention of his brother in the kitchen. I cannot wait actually, everything sounds pretty delicious. And then we are just enjoying the atmosphere here and here, it’s just so cute, look. It’s like we have a treasure. We got.. local extra virgin olive oil. Yes This place is so nice and peaceful. Beautiful. And the food has arrived. We have the homemade pie with smoked pork and cheese. We have Dakos with the dry bread, tomato, cheese, maybe this is feta cheese and an olive on top. Then we have pork cooked with feta served with fries. Let’s try one fries just like that to break the ice. Nice Let’s start with the pie. Oh, can you see the pork? I’m salivating, attenzione. like pizza. Mamma mia! Smoky, soft, flaky, cheesy. Attention, ladies and gentlemen, Illegal!one. And it’s not greasy at all. Oh my God, attenzione! Attenzione, I can have ten of this. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. So good. Look! Cheese, pork. Wow. Super good. I did not expect that. Oh my God. And now on to the Dakos. Let’s go for it. Buon appetito! Oh I think it’s not feta, it’s Mizithra, the Cretan cheese. Oh, the tomato. Nice and sweet! I love this bread, it is nice and crunchy. Quite filling. And the olive oil. Wow. Cretan bruschetta with cheese and tomatoes, together, they are perfect. It just tastes fresh. Crunchiness, creaminess, juicy tomatoes. The food tastes even better with this view. Let’s try some pork before it gets too cold. Look how cheesy. It’s cooked with feta. Super tender! Look how juicy! Illegal, attenzione! Unbelievable. Incredible. And it completely disintegrates. You know what I want to do now? The combo that I want to do is with this. Let’s try to put some of the pork Extra pork. Mamma mia! Look at this. So good. Well, I’m sure is good. Ridiculous! Sit back and enjoy. Mamma mia. Super good We are flying. Flying Ridiculous. We decided to end it with a dessert. Look at this beauty We’re having homemade sheep yoghurt. Honey made by them. And look on top, pollen. Mamma mia! Oh, it looks fantastic. I cannot handle it actually. I really want to give it a try. Let’s go for it. Mamma mia, look at this. What a masterpiece. Oh my God! Sour. Sweet. Refreshing. And this pollen on top. It’s like sweet chunks. Very unique. There is this thick layer on top. It’s amazing. Oh. The yoghurt is good, but the honey…oh is unbelievable. Oh my God, I can’t stop. Oh, what a meal we had! We came here by accident. I mean, I made my research, but it wasn’t actually planned. But then we decided to stop. What a meal and what a surprise. Simple. Nice service, amazing view. You breathe fresh air. Really, really nice. Ragazzi, for dinner, we made it to a local village tavern This is amazing. Everything is done still the traditional way. Look, they’re cooking in this stone oven. They cook vegetables, moussaka
and many other traditional dishes. Cretan dishes. And look at this. They also cook on woodfire They fry French fries on woodfire Unbelievable. Look at the wood over there. Mountain view. It doesn’t get any better than this. And, follow me Over there They grill meat, pork, sausages, everything. Then look at this setup. Beautiful, huh? Mamma mia! It really feels like you are deep in the village. They smoke pork and lot more. And then they keep it hot near the fire on wood. Amazing. Okay. Pork belly. What a beautiful setup. I’m super excited. Sherly as well. We are quite impressed. I heard a lot of good things about this place. And I cannot wait to try the food and also to find the table because it is quite busy. So let’s go. Our food has arrived. We have feta Saganaki so feta cheese with tomatoes and peppers baked in the oven. Then we have their go to dish. This is smoked pork belly. Mamma mia! Look at this. This is the one that we saw before. How could I say no to it? This is goat, young goat, cooked the oven, in the stone oven that I showed you before. And with the olive oil and bay leaves, everything served with potatoes fried in olive oil on wood. Unbelievable. So they cook everything in olive wood. Lots of dishes in a stone oven. It doesn’t get any more attention than this. We are in the middle of the village, in the middle, almost of nowhere. It’s very beautiful. It really feels like we are in a farm. Okay, let’s try the dishes. I’m sure 100% they’re going to be amazing. Okay, let’s start with the feta. Mamma mia! Look at this, amore. Mamma mia, look at this, beautiful. Oh, so soft. Oooh! Okay, let’s grab one piece with tomatoes and peppers. Do you thin it’s too hot if I do one bite? Okay, let’s go for it. It looks amazing and smells delicious. Wow. Buon appetito Wow! It completely disintegrates in your mouth I love the contrast with the sourness of the cheese, sweetness of the tomatoes and the bitterness of the green peppers. Wow. And I love the crunch from the peppers. Now, serious stuff with the bread. Oh, it’s a bit spicy, huh, with the pepper. Look at this. This is the real deal. So good! The cat is here. He’s so cute. You should see this cat. Orange, chunky. I can’t touch him now, I’m very tempted but I’m eating. Later! Now, focus Max. I did not expect it to be a bit spicy. Nice! So, it’s creamy. I love the crunch from the peppers. There is a bit of black pepper as well. It melts in your mouth. This is a must try dish here in Greece. Insane. Now let’s go for the goat. This is one of their recommendations, so I couldn’t say no with olive oil and bay leaves. Attention! Buon appetito To me. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Wow. Nice fatty. You can taste bay leaves. Just a bit oily. Oh, actually, the flavour is not as strong as lamb. It’s actually less intense. Usually lamb is very strong no matter how you cook it. Okay. You can cover it with spices and everything, but the flavour is strong. Actually, goat is a lot more subtle compared to lamb. Very nice! It’s a bit fatty, I love it. Goat is quite popular animal here in Crete, so. Certainly they know how to cook it. Very delicious, tender, nicely cooked in the oven. It doesn’t get any better than this. Wow. Fantastic. Now I want to try the fries. Cooked on wood and in olive oil. Ooooh, not greasy at all. Mamma mia! Oh, way different, way different. Oh, man, these are good. Now, what I’ve been waiting for, Smoked pork belly. Let’s go for it. Look at this. Look. Simply seasoned with oregano And our boy here soon will be fed. Look how cute. Collaboration Tender, tender, tender, tender, fatty, nice and salty. Savoury. The skin almost as a bit of a crunch. I don’t think it’s smoky. I can taste smokiness. It’s delicious, it is very good. This is definitely slow cooked because it’s very tender. I love it. How can you dislike pork belly that unless it’s cooked the wrong way? I saw basically everyone having this and I said I have to have it. Then the waitress said,
I think you should try the goat because it’s delicious. She told us that it’s one of their go to dishes and feta saganaki. As soon as I saw another table having it served on a claypot, was sold to me. Great food, great atmosphere. Now at night, it’s really nice. Really cosy. I think during summer is even better because it’s warm. You can come here, for lunch and have a nice experience and enjoy the tables outside over there because how beautiful. What an experience. This really is Cretan traditional cuisine. Guys, if you come here, look for Bob. It’s him. Super cute cat. He’s even purring now. It’s like a train. Oh my God. Oh, I thought we were friends. Αγαπητέ Μαξ έκανες την καλύτερη επιλογή να πας στην Κρήτη της οποίας το φαγητό είναι λίγο καλύτερο από οποιοδήποτε άλλο μέρος της Ελλάδας και αυτό οφείλεται προφανώς στα υλικά που παράγει αυτός ο τόπος.Ραγκατσι έχω την εντύπωση ότι εκτός από συμπαθής είσαι και καλός άνθρωπος και σου εύχομαι να πραγματοποιήσεις όλα σου τα όνειρα και όταν πείνας να έρχεσαι Ελλαδα και να απολαμβάνεις φαγητό και ποτό.

  3. Parrot fish “skaros” is very underrated and honestly I don’t think sold enough in Greece. In all honesty if you were to have red mullets the best ones are the smaller ones in the saronic gulf.

Wow, what a feast you had in Crete 🤗, The octopus & fish looked amazing & delicious & the greens you were eating were either Rathidkia or Horta (wild greens) very good for the body & cleans the blood.   9. J'etais à Mikonos et une autre îles à proximité, franchement, à part les feuilles de vignes farcies, les pates, les pizzas et une fois la moussaka mal rechauffé, c'etait un calvère. En ce qui concerne la poulpe, j'en est pas vue ni gouté…
