鳥取自動車道から見える“謎の城”へ|鳥取県の道の駅西いなば気楽里【S660ドライブ】

Alright, let’s get going. I thought we were heading back to the highway, but the navigation is guiding me through local roads, so let’s take them instead. Personally, I prefer local roads over highways. That railway above is the Chizu Express Line. It seems to be a pretty high-speed section. I believe the JR Limited Express “Super Hakuto” runs through here. There’s also the Awakura Onsen hot spring around here. Next, I’m heading to a roadside station in Tottori Prefecture. Let’s drive toward Michi-no-Eki Seiryu Chaya Kawahara. The previous roadside station sold souvenirs from both Tottori and Okayama. Local vegetables were sold in another nearby building. They also had pears from western Tottori. They were labeled as “West Tottori Pears,” but I actually bought some pears the last time I visited Tottori. So even though they looked delicious, I didn’t buy any this time. Huh? Looks like I took a wrong turn. I’ll turn left here. This is the only tunnel that passes through Shidosaka Pass. It’s one-way traffic, so I had to wait quite a while. Inside the tunnel, I crossed into Chizu Town, Tottori Prefecture. From here, I’ll drive along the Tottori Expressway. So, in the end, I ended up taking the Tottori Expressway after all. Michi-no-Eki Awakurando was one of my favorite roadside stations. It’s located right next to a river, and there was a well-maintained wooden walkway. There were many benches along it, and sitting there felt incredibly relaxing. It’s a place where I’d love to spend more time just relaxing. Listening to the sound of the river… You can hear some traffic from the nearby expressway, but it’s still nice to sit and enjoy the sound of the flowing water. It was such a peaceful, beautiful roadside station. It’s hard to fully express that feeling through video, but it’s definitely a great place to take your time and relax. I personally prefer roadside stations in rural areas rather than ones located in busy towns. That’s why I really liked Awakurando. Maybe I should’ve just stayed on the local road… Highways are convenient, but… They’re kind of boring to drive. Driving on the national route might have been the better choice. The Tottori Expressway is toll-free, though, and it does get you to your destination faster. Still, the drive itself isn’t as interesting. The scenery would’ve been nicer on the local roads. But the next roadside station happens to be along the expressway. Just 11 kilometers left until Michi-no-Eki Seiryu Chaya Kawahara. We’ll arrive in about ten minutes. So many tunnels. Almost all tunnels. Just tunnels everywhere. Really, nothing but tunnels. This is the Mochigase parking area. The next exit is Kawahara. Looks like I’ll arrive at the roadside station around lunchtime. I wanted to avoid arriving right at lunchtime. It’s about 300 meters after getting off at the Kawahara interchange. A beautiful view spreads out outside. The scenery along the local road looks nice. I can see a castle up ahead. This is Michi-no-Eki Seiryu Chaya Kawahara. I’ll exit near the Kawahara interchange. The compact car parking spaces are all full… I’ll try entering the roadside station from the local road. As expected, it’s quite crowded. There are some open parking spots, but… I’d like a bit more space to park comfortably. So I’ll head to the sightseeing spot I wanted to visit first. You can see a castle up ahead. That’s Kawahara Castle — I’m heading there now. Roadside stations tend to get crowded around lunchtime. Michi-no-Eki Kawahara is no exception — it’s quite busy. I’d prefer to visit popular roadside stations early in the morning. The castle is getting closer. It’s located up on a hill. Kawahara Castle. You can see this castle from the Tottori Expressway, and I’ve always been curious about it — this is my first visit. I’ll turn left here. And then, I’ll turn left again here. It seems you can also walk up using a hiking trail. This area once had a mountain castle called Maruyama Castle. When Toyotomi Hideyoshi besieged Tottori Castle, this was known as the site of his military encampment. The current castle was rebuilt in the Heisei era as a symbolic tower for the town. Inside, it serves as a local history museum showcasing the culture of Kawahara. Let’s head back to Michi-no-Eki Seiryu Chaya Kawahara once more. When I visited Kawahara Castle, I found that the entire building is made of reinforced concrete. The interior is modern, built during the Heisei period. Inside, there are many exhibits related to the Kawahara area, so it’s a great place to learn about the local history and culture. If you come to Kawahara, I recommend stopping by. It’s worth it. You can see Kawahara Castle from the Tottori Expressway. I’d always wanted to visit, so I’m glad I finally did. Now, I’ll return to the roadside station once again. This is Michi-no-Eki Seiryu Chaya Kawahara. I’ll stop by if there are fewer people now. It’s actually even more crowded than before. No luck with the timing today, so I’ll give up for now. I’ll make a U-turn here. Michi-no-Eki Seiryu Chaya Kawahara was too crowded, so I decided not to stop since parking calmly would be difficult. I’ll get back on the Tottori Expressway from here. There’s another roadside station ahead. I’ll change my plan and go to that one instead. The Seiryu Chaya Kawahara roadside station is quite popular and busy. I’ve actually been there before. If I remember correctly, they had a good variety of local products. But I’m not a fan of crowded places. It’s amazing that it’s busy even on weekdays. That just shows how popular it is. So let’s go to a different roadside station this time. I’m not good with big crowds… That’s the end of the Tottori Expressway. It connects directly to the free section of the San’in Expressway. Now I’m deciding which roadside station to visit next. I’m driving while thinking about the rest of today’s plan. There’s Michi-no-Eki Nishi Inaba Kirari nearby. It’s about 2.5 kilometers from here. Let’s go check out Michi-no-Eki Nishi Inaba Kirari. It’s not what I originally planned, though. This is the Hamamura-Shikano hot spring area. I’ll exit the expressway here. The roadside station is about 50 meters from the exit. I can see the roadside station right in front of me. The parking area looks spacious — that’s nice. There’s a Twilight Express Mizukaze sightseeing bus here. Maybe because it’s a weekday, the footbath wasn’t open. I just visited Michi-no-Eki Nishi Inaba Kirari, and I bought some food there. Smoked venison. And one more item— the “Tonosama Roll.” It’s sushi made with Shikano soba noodles, wrapped in seaweed like a roll. Here’s what it looks like inside. It’s filled generously with Shikano soba noodles. Delicious. I thought it had rice in it, but it’s actually all soba! Tasty. It’s my first time eating this — it’s really good. And the other one is the venison. It says to keep it below 10°C, so I’ll go ahead and eat it all now. Here’s what it looks like. It doesn’t have a strong gamey taste — surprisingly delicious. I expected the flavor to be much stronger. The venison is actually really tasty. Delicious. They sell this kind of food here too, so if you visit this roadside station, give it a try. Alright, let’s head to the next roadside station.
