横浜市緑区の町を歩きながら、古くからこの地に残る寺をたずねた。駅前の通りを抜けると、住宅のあいだに静かな境内が見えてくる。林光寺──かつて西光寺とともに祈りを守ってきた古刹だという。二つの名を持つ寺の境内には、時の流れを包み込むような穏やかな空気が漂っていた。石段を上がると、緑区遺産として知られる奇利吹の瀧があり、かつては滝行が行われていたという。不動明王と羅漢の像がその傍らに立ち、四国遍路を模した石仏が参道を囲んでいる。白鳥の像や鼠菩薩もあり、ひとつひとつに人々の祈りが宿っているようだった。外周の道を歩くと、斜面に白く光る地層が現れる。遠い昔、富士山から届いた火山灰が、長い時間をかけてこの地の記憶になったのだろう。暮らしのすぐそばに、祈りと自然が今も息づいていた。
