【藤沢駅】大規模再開発で激変する湘南の玄関口!3路線ターミナル駅を散策

Today we came to Fujisawa Station in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture! This is Shonan area’s largest terminal station where three lines meet: JR Tokaido Line, Odakyu Enoshima Line, and Enoshima Electric Railway. It takes about 50 minutes from Tokyo Station on the JR Tokaido Line, about 20 minutes from Yokohama, and about 1 hour from Shinjuku Station on the Odakyu Line. As it’s called the gateway to Shonan, it’s also famous as a tourist hub for Enoshima and Kamakura areas. On the Odakyu Line, it’s 6 minutes to Katase-Enoshima Station, and about 13 minutes to Enoshima Station on the Enoden. To Kamakura, it’s about 17 minutes via transfer at Ofuna Station. Not only for tourists, but it’s also convenient for commuting to Tokyo, making it a popular area for people who want to live here. Today we came to explore around Fujisawa Station starting from 7 AM on a Saturday morning. We thought it might be quiet since it’s a holiday, but we’re surprised by how many people are here even at this time! Let’s start exploring around JR Fujisawa Station right away! We exited the JR ticket gates and came to the North Exit pedestrian deck. This is a very spacious pedestrian deck. There’s a large tree in the center, and it’s a beautifully maintained pedestrian space. On the left side is Saikaya department store. It has various shops including Yamada Denki’s LABI and KALDI. The large building on the right is Bic Camera Fujisawa Store. The 7th and 8th floors house Junkudo Bookstore. Junkudo Fujisawa Store is quite large with a two-floor layout. The 7th floor has specialized books like medical books, art books, language, humanities, and science books lined up. The 8th floor has magazines, comics, literature, children’s books, and other general publications. It’s rare to have a bookstore of this scale in the Shonan area. With everything from specialized books to general books, it’s quite a large bookstore. There’s quite a bit of foot traffic even on a Saturday morning. You can also see ODAKYU Shonan GATE on the south side from the pedestrian deck. The 2nd floor of Shonan GATE is directly connected to the Enoden ticket gates. The 6th floor has a library, and there’s a futsal court on the rooftop. Both the North Exit and South Exit have high-convenience buildings clustered together. Let’s take the escalator down from the pedestrian deck to ground level and head toward Fujisawa City Hall. Fujisawa City is a large city within Kanagawa Prefecture with a population of about 440,000. It faces Sagami Bay and is characterized by its location blessed with natural mountains and sea. While it encompasses tourist destinations like Enoshima and Shonan Coast, it has also developed as a commuting zone to Tokyo. So it’s a city with both tourism and residential aspects. It’s also convenient that the city hall is only about a 3-minute walk from the station. When you need to go to city hall for various procedures, it’s helpful that it’s easily accessible by train. The main city hall building was completed in 2017. It’s underground 1 floor, above ground 9 floors, with a total construction cost of 18.8 billion yen. The 5th floor has an observation garden, and the 9th floor has an observation deck. Both the 5th and 8th floors are very spacious with apparently great views. However, since it’s Saturday morning and before opening hours, we couldn’t go inside. Looking back after researching it later, I think it was a shame we didn’t stop by. By the way, this area around the station is surprisingly quiet and has a pleasant walking atmosphere. There’s a convenience store right next to the government building, so it seems convenient for stopping by while running errands. Now let’s go through the underground passage to head to the South Exit side. Fujisawa Station’s underground passage connects north and south and is very convenient. It was recently renovated and has become a very bright and beautiful corridor. There are stairs and slopes, so it’s safe even on days with lots of luggage or with strollers. There’s a Mister Donut right after exiting the underground passage. There’s a line even though it’s before opening time… Could this be a line for “Mocchyrin”? To have this many people lined up from Saturday morning, it must be a popular product! Mister Donut’s new products do tend to create quite a buzz on release days. Thank you for your patience, everyone who’s been waiting since morning! The Odakyu Enoshima Line ticket gates are the only ones on ground level 1st floor, so let’s check them out. While Fujisawa Station has three lines, only this Odakyu line has gates at ground level. The Odakyu Enoshima Line connects Shinjuku to Fujisawa. From Fujisawa, it extends to Katase-Enoshima Station, making it an important line as the gateway to Enoshima tourism. It’s about 1 hour from Shinjuku to Fujisawa, and about 6 minutes from Fujisawa to Katase-Enoshima. I think it’s the most convenient line for going to Enoshima. With the ongoing Fujisawa Station redevelopment, this Odakyu ticket gate is also scheduled to move to the 2nd floor. Scheduled for completion in March 2028, all ticket gates for the three lines – JR, Odakyu, and Enoden – will be on the same 2nd floor. Since it will become an elevated station building, you can only see the current ground-level 1st floor Odakyu gates for now. Now let’s go up the stairs to the 2nd floor aerial corridor. We’ve climbed the stairs to the 2nd floor aerial corridor. From here, we’ll go through the pedestrian deck to the Enoshima Electric Railway ticket gates on the South Exit side. From the aerial corridor, you can get a good view of the Fujisawa Station area. Having a roof is convenient since you can move without getting wet even on rainy days. The Enoden ticket gates are on the 2nd floor of Shonan GATE. They’re directly connected from the South Exit adjacent to JR gates via the pedestrian deck. Enoshima Electric Railway is affectionately known by its nickname “Enoden.” It connects Fujisawa Station to Kamakura Station with 14 stations in about 37 minutes. Along the way, it passes through tourist destinations like Enoshima Station, Kamakura-kokomae Station, Hase Station, and Kamakura Station. It’s an essential line for Shonan and Kamakura tourism. ODAKYU Shonan GATE, where the Enoden gates are located, is a commercial facility that opened in March 2019. The building was renovated from what used to be Odakyu Department Store. It spans from basement 1st floor to above ground 7th floor, and there’s even a futsal court on the rooftop. It houses a wide range of shops including restaurants, fashion, and miscellaneous goods. The 6th floor also has a library, and being so close to the station, it offers high convenience. It’s convenient to have a library inside a commercial facility. You can borrow books while doing shopping. Shonan GATE, befitting the gateway to Shonan, features bright interiors that evoke the sea. Now let’s actually go see the Enoden ticket gates. The Enoden ticket gates are adjacent to the 2nd floor of Shonan GATE. From here, you can depart to tourist destinations like Enoshima and Kamakura. In addition to PASMO and Suica, you can also use credit card contactless payment. With increasing foreign tourists, being able to ride with credit cards is surely helpful. Let’s go back a bit to the aerial corridor and look at that Fujisawa Meiten Building. Fujisawa Meiten Building is a long-established commercial building at Fujisawa Station’s South Exit. The 1st floor to basement has restaurants, and the upper floors include Yurindo bookstore. Actually, a large-scale redevelopment is planned for the area including this Fujisawa Meiten Building. It’s the “Fujisawa Station South Exit Area 391 District Urban Redevelopment Project,” whose urban plan was decided in June 2023. The plan is to rebuild three buildings – Fujisawa Meiten Building, Diamond Building, and CD Building – into a new complex building. Since the buildings’ aging had progressed, the redevelopment is being led by private initiative. Since there hadn’t been any major rebuilding of commercial buildings in front of the station before, this redevelopment is expected to revitalize the entire surrounding area. The current buildings will end operations in summer 2027. The new complex building is scheduled for completion in autumn 2031. It will be 17 floors above ground, 2 floors below ground, with total floor area of about 36,200 square meters. Floors 1-6 will be stores, floors 7-10 will be offices, floor 12 will be a multipurpose hall, and floors 13 and up will be a hotel. The basement will have parking. Development around Fujisawa Station is progressing in order from the North Exit, with plans eventually including the South Exit station square development. As the gateway to Shonan, it looks like it will become an even more attractive city. Now let’s walk eastward from Fujisawa Station’s South Exit. This is a street called Miyamae-dori. Since it’s early morning, there aren’t many people yet. But during the day, this street gets very crowded. The sidewalk is narrow, so it’s a bit difficult to walk. It would be even more challenging during busy hours. The area around Fujisawa Station has developed as a commercial district, so it gets quite bustling on weekday afternoons and holidays. Being able to walk during the quiet morning hours might be precious. Indeed, since shops aren’t open yet at this time, the city has a different atmosphere. Oh, there’s a Cafe Veloce! Since it’s still early morning and other shops aren’t open yet, Veloce was operating. It’s helpful that it’s open from morning. We were getting tired from walking, so let’s take a little break. Veloce is a chain store that operates from early morning to late night, so it’s reliable even at times like this. The interior has a calm atmosphere, and there were only a few customers. It’s a quiet space where you can relax. I ordered an iced coffee. Well, it tastes pretty standard. It has the stable taste characteristic of chain stores. Just right for a break during our morning exploration. After resting at Veloce, we came to our target Chinese restaurant “Chuka Taishin.” We arrived exactly at the 11 AM opening time, but there’s already a line! Established in 1973, this is a long-established Chinese restaurant in Fujisawa with over 50 years of history. It’s located on the 2nd floor of Rokko Kaikan, a 2-minute walk from Fujisawa Station’s South Exit. It’s so beloved by locals that it’s called “Fujisawa’s soul food.” It was even featured on the TV program “Matsuko’s Unknown World.” After waiting about 10 minutes, we got counter seats. The interior has a somewhat Showa-era atmosphere. It’s amazing that the operating hours are from 11 AM to 4 AM the next morning. It’s a renowned restaurant also used as the final stop after nightlife. We ordered the signature menu item “Taishin Ramen.” It’s an ankake (thick sauce) ramen with plenty of sauce made with ground meat and shiitake mushrooms. It features ultra-thin noodles with thick sauce, containing pickled mustard tuber, ground meat, bamboo shoots, and more. It looks delicious already! The sauce is generously poured over, and it’s incredibly hot. This sauce is incredibly delicious. It’s full of ground meat and has such rich flavor. The compatibility with ultra-thin noodles is perfect. It’s a slightly sweet soy sauce-based soup, and the sauce clings well, so you can taste the umami in every bite. Also, it comes with a perforated spoon. With this, you can scoop up the remaining ingredients at the end and eat without waste. As expected from a restaurant that’s been loved locally for over 50 years, it was truly delicious. We’d like to eat here again when we come to Fujisawa Station. After Chuka Taishin, we head to explore the North Exit area. We’ll go through the underground passage next to Fujisawa Meiten Building to move to the North Exit side. Fujisawa Station’s underground passage began in 1965 when the north-south connecting passage opened. Later in 1977, the east-west passage was completed, creating the current underground passage. So it has about 50 years of history. This underground passage has been used for a long time, but due to aging, it underwent major renovation in April 2022. The wall design expresses the waves hitting Shonan’s coast in geometric patterns. While it used to have a dim impression, now natural light enters through skylights in the atrium sections. Bright lighting is installed throughout, making it easy to walk. Barrier-free features are also well-developed, with tactile paving for the visually impaired and guidance signs. At about 90 meters long and 7 meters wide, it’s quite spacious. The North Exit underground plaza has benches and projectors installed. Even though it’s an underground passage, it has become a comfortable space. The projectors display municipal information and seasonal images of the surrounding area. During events, floor projection mapping also operates. We came up to ground level from beside Saikaya. Let’s continue exploring in the northwest direction. What kind of cityscape does the North Exit side have? Fujisawa has a history of developing as the central city of the Shonan region. Its role as the gateway to the sea for Enoshima and Kamakura areas is also significant. It has the atmosphere of a livable city where residential areas and commercial districts are in harmony. It feels like a diverse city where university students, tourists, and locals interact. While being within commuting distance to Tokyo, it’s also close to the sea and rich in nature. That’s why it’s understandably popular as a place people want to live. There are many shopping streets and individual shops, and the old-fashioned city atmosphere remains. The charm is in how newly redeveloped areas coexist with good old parts. We’ve returned to the station area. There’s some kind of event happening at Sun Pearl Plaza. People are already gathering, but since it’s still before noon, there will probably be even more later. Sun Pearl Plaza at Fujisawa Station’s North Exit is a place where events are frequently held. It’s utilized as a place for regional revitalization and citizen interaction. It’s nice that the station square serves as a gathering place for citizens like this. So this concludes our exploration around Fujisawa Station. Starting from 7 AM, we were able to visit various places. We fully experienced the charm of Fujisawa Station where three lines – JR Tokaido Line, Odakyu Enoshima Line, and Enoshima Electric Railway – meet. It was a station area worthy of being called the gateway to Shonan. Station area redevelopment is progressing, with the North Exit pedestrian deck and underground passage renovations making it more convenient. Future plans include South Exit redevelopment and elevating the Odakyu ticket gates, making it even more attractive. The transportation access is also excellent. About 50 minutes from Tokyo Station on the JR Tokaido Line, about 1 hour from Shinjuku on the Odakyu Line. It’s convenient both as a tourist hub for Enoshima and Kamakura and for commuting to Tokyo. Shopping, dining, tourism, living environment – it’s an attractive city with everything. We clearly understood why it’s popular both as a gateway to tourist destinations like Enoshima and Kamakura and as a place people want to live. It has the multifaceted charm of a central city in Shonan, surrounded by sea and mountains. Since this was on a Saturday morning, we’d like to see the Fujisawa Station area during weekdays and at night next time. Well then, thank you for watching until the end.
