The Village That Lives Inside the Fog – Madeira’s Hidden Gem

This is one of the most mysterious villages in all of Madeira… and I’m going to show you why! Here’s what awaits you… This village is hidden inside an ancient laurel forest, a place where the fog takes on a life of its own. Here, everything seems to have become softer: the trees are fairy-like, the air is thick. And every step sounds muffled, as if under a blanket. This is a place where the day begins slowly, where the light seeps through the branches so carefully, as if it doesn’t want to wake the forest. They say that Fanal is a forest that breathes. And the village next to it is like the heart of this fog. Here, the fog can disappear in a minute… and return even thicker. Now just relax… let the sound of footsteps, the breath of the fog and the silence of the forest guide you, because what you will see next is a place like no other. A small world that is almost hidden by the clouds. The trees are old laurels: their twisted trunks in moss hold the fog like a blanket. Imagine: these laurel trees are several hundred years old. They have been standing here for so long that the moss on the bark is older than most cities in Europe. Once, millions of years ago, such forests covered almost the entire Earth. Laurel trees were everywhere – from Europe to Asia. And they have survived only here, in Madeira, because the climate is unique: humid, mild and almost unchanged for centuries. And the most interesting thing: in Fanal there is fog for more than 250-300 days a year. It is this that nourishes these trees, envelops them, gives them shade, water and life. Did you like it? Like and subscribe – and let’s move on. Without fog, this forest simply would not exist. And you can constantly hear birds here – like a small choir somewhere in the fog. They appear before you see the trees. And, honestly, I am delighted with this sound. It’s such a soft, natural background that you want to just stand, listen and say nothing. And what natural sound do you like the most – waves, wind, birds or, perhaps, the silence of the forest? And what natural sound do you like the most – waves, wind, birds or, perhaps, the silence of the forest? Here, humidity is felt even in the air – as if the forest touches your skin. Every step is soft, the ground is wet and warm. The fog here is so thick that it seems as if it could be gathered in the palm of your hand. And then I couldn’t help myself and ran into the fog – and at that moment it seemed that the forest was breathing with me. I want you to feel it too… This forest has become incredibly popular – and for good reason. Every step here looks as if you’ve fallen into a frame from a fantasy film. That’s why it produces unique photos that cannot be repeated anywhere else. The fog changes the picture every minute: one moment everything is white, and in a moment the outlines of trees appear… and the frame becomes perfect without any filters. Even the cows here seem to move more slowly – like this whole foggy world. Madeira lies right in the middle of the Atlantic – far from everything, but surprisingly close to nature, which is unique here. Due to its mild climate, it is also called the island of eternal spring. This path leads to Balções – one of the most atmospheric viewing platforms in Madeira, hidden in the fog and the depths of the laurel forest. By the way, cows often graze here – and their tracks will tell you this even in the fog. So look under your feet… because nature here is not only beautiful, but also very honest in its evidence. Just stop for a moment… and feel it. Light air, clouds nearby and peace, which can only be found in places where nature speaks quietly. Here, every step seems to lead deeper into a fairy tale – the fog opens the way only to those who go further. The clouds here run so fast… and everything around is so green and lush. In this forest, from time to time you come across small buildings – old, silent and a little lost among the trees. They appear unexpectedly, as if someone once started a new life here, and then just… moved on. The facades are covered with moss, the doors creak in the wind, and the windows have not seen light for a long time. Some look like hunting lodges, others like warehouses or technical sheds that nature has almost reclaimed. Everything is very quiet here. There are no people or cars – only the smell of wood and the cool, thick air. We are transported to another picturesque village, located right in the center of Madeira Island. Here, in the misty Ribeiro Frio, every step feels like entering another dimension. Ribeiro Frio is a small mountain settlement hidden in the very heart of Madeira, among laurel forests that are over 20 million years old. We go around the village, picking up paths that lead straight into the heart of the fog. Here you can really feel the village. There is silence all around, sometimes interrupted by the soft chirping of birds… The village stands high in the mountains, where cold streams, moisture in the air, and constant fog create its own special microclimate. This is one of those places where nature looks almost the same as it did thousands of years ago — untouched and very alive. I hope you will feel it with me. And suddenly along the path are flowers. Bright, saturated, as if someone took pity on the colors in this foggy world. I don’t know about you, but I am completely delighted with them. They look as if they grew here specifically to color this cold green forest with at least a few warm strokes. There is so much green here that it seems as if the forest simply absorbs everything around. Honestly, sometimes you catch yourself thinking: “Would I like to live here?” There is something very attractive in this peace — no noise, no fuss… just nature breathing nearby. If you like it, like and subscribe. This greenery here is simply incredible, it seems like there is almost too much of it — but that is what makes the place so alive. You look around and catch yourself thinking that the forest here seems to breathe with you. We approach something more interesting… it seems like it is some old farm. And again these flowers… I just can’t help but admire them. I wonder what is behind the fence… it seems like something very old. This path leads to Balções — one of the most atmospheric viewing platforms in Madeira, hidden in the fog and the depths of the laurel forest. And here is the inhabitant of this forest who creates this magical melody. Madeira is generally amazing: nature lives by its own rules here. In this village, greenery seems to sprout from everywhere, even where it shouldn’t have enough space. They say that there are over 700 species of plants in Madeira, and some of them grow only here — nowhere else in the world. Laurel forests are unique in general: they are millions of years old, and they have even survived ice ages. You walk among this greenery and you understand: this is not just a forest, this is a small world that exists by itself. The levadas of Madeira are probably the most interesting thing that man has created here together with nature. These are long narrow channels that stretch through the mountains for tens of kilometers, carrying water from the north of the island to the south. They were once built by hand, cutting a path right into the rocks… and when you walk next to them, you can imagine what kind of work it was. But the coolest thing is the paths along them. They lead to places where you definitely wouldn’t have gotten to without the levadas. Another forest inhabitant. Now we are in the very heart of the Madeira forest. Just stop for a moment, breathe in and feel how this foggy green world envelops you from all sides. And the deeper you go, the more it seems that the forest itself moves. Ferns grow in cascades on the slopes, fog hangs between the branches, and every sound seems to be muffled by this green wall. And as we go further, it becomes clear: Madeira lives on water. Here, around every bend, there is a stream, a small spring or a waterfall, which is hidden between these green slopes. And now we are already on the main road – the same one that runs through the village. And Madeira is also famous for its hydrangeas. There are so many of them that sometimes they grow right in the middle of the forest – like wild bushes. There are few houses in these mountain villages, everything is scattered between greenery and fog. But from time to time you come across such cozy cafes – places where you can rest after the route and hide from the humidity. A small chapel in the middle of the fog, snow-white walls, wooden doors and the smell of a damp forest all around. If you like this atmosphere, subscribe and like. It really means a lot to me . I really liked it here. And what about you? Write your impressions in the comments – and tell me, have you been to Madeira yet? Feel this last minute – the fog, the water and the silence of Madeira. I want to stay here a little longer.

You haven’t seen anything like this. Seriously.
This walk takes you to Madeira — a tiny Portuguese island 🌋 floating in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Here, an ancient laurel forest (fanal forest) breathes with mist, drips with life, and feels straight-up otherworldly. The fog is not a guest — it’s a resident. It rolls in, wraps the trees like a blanket, and turns every step into a scene from a dream 🌫️🌿.

We wander through a living, mossy cathedral of twisted trunks, ferns, and dripping branches. Everything is wet, glossy, and awake — stones, fences, even the air 💧. Sunlight breaks through in soft rays, then disappears again, and the forest changes mood every few minutes. It’s the kind of place that makes you walk slower and whisper.

Then we head to Ribeiro Frio, a mountain village, perched at about 850–900 m above sea level (yes — village!). Same story here: mist curling over ridgelines, bright green walls of vegetation, water everywhere — streams, springs, tiny waterfalls. Raw, lush, crazy beautiful. If “hidden gem” ever meant anything, it’s this little village tucked into the clouds.

This is a walk about a village that lives inside the fog, a forest that never stops breathing, and an island that sits between sky and ocean. Pack a jacket, charge your curiosity — and let’s get lost in the clouds ☁️✨ — village pace, village heart.

  1. Hello Maya, what beautiful weather, what beautiful fog! I'm sure you're enjoying it. I enjoyed it too, although not as much as you. Take care of yourself.🧿

  2. Cristiano Ronaldo was born on the island of Madeira, in the city of Funchal. Look how much he loved football that he was able to leave here.😁

  3. Madeira is gorgeous but the video makes it seem like fanal forest and Ribeiro Frio village are in the same area. Ribeiro Frio is almost on the opposite end of the island and doesn't have nearly as much fog as fanal forest.
