温泉好きなら一度は行ってみたい!濃厚すぎて泥が溜まる驚きの硫黄泉【秋田県 泥湯温泉♨️奥山旅館】日本秘湯を守る会
Is this Hell? Or Heaven? A Story of Resurrection : A Hotel Preserving Hidden Hot Springs, Featuring Local Akita Mountain and Sea Delicacies. Doroyu Onsen is a hot spring resort nestled in a small basin nestled in the Kamuro Mountains on the Akita side of Kurikoma Quasi-National Park. Doroyu Onsen’s history dates back to the Heian period, approximately 1,200 years ago, when records show villagers bathing and taking therapeutic baths. During the Edo period, it became a therapeutic hot spring resort, and the first hot spring inn is said to have opened around 1680. Legend has it that a tengu (long-nosed goblin) turned the thick, milky water cloudy so that a sick young woman could bathe in it . However, the Doroyu Onsen area, which is surrounded by place names like “Hell,” is known for its high concentration of hydrogen sulfide gas spewing out. Following a fatal hydrogen sulfide-related accident in 2005 , a no-entry zone has been established. Along the way, you’ll barely be able to pass other visitors… This time, we’ll introduce you to Okuyama Ryokan, Doroyu Onsen, and Akita Prefecture. This video introduces the charms of Okuyama Ryokan, boasting its “mud baths,” including its history and overview, all of its special rooms with attached hot spring baths, and breakfast and dinner meals . Please take your time to enjoy the video, which is packed with highlights. History and Overview: Doroyu Onsen, where hydrogen sulfide steam rises from every nook and cranny. Okuyama Ryokan is a hidden hot spring in a secluded valley surrounded by mountains . Okuyama Ryokan was founded in 1912 (Meiji 45). Doroyu Onsen was once home to four hot spring inns, but now only two, including Okuyama Ryokan, are in operation (one is day-trip only), making it a quiet hot spring resort. At first glance, Okuyama Ryokan appears to be an old-fashioned Japanese-style house, but in 2016, a fire destroyed all four buildings: the main building, annex, and two cabins. While plans to rebuild were nearly abandoned, the current fifth-generation owner and the enthusiasm of those around him allowed the inn to reopen for lodging in 2019. During the reconstruction, an architect specializing in old houses used many antique materials from the Meiji and Showa periods for the structural materials, fixtures, and lighting, recreating the nostalgic atmosphere and warmth of the past. Okuyama Ryokan today is a two-story building with nine rooms. Even now, with only one hot spring inn offering accommodation, it continues to preserve the history of Doroyu Onsen. Okuyama Ryokan is a member of the Japan Society for the Preservation of Hidden Hot Springs. You can earn stamps by booking through the Society’s official website or by calling directly . Collecting 10 stamps entitles you to a free stay at one of the inns—a great deal! 👍 Each inn ‘s stamp is unique and visually appealing, so why not collect them when you stay at a Society for the Preservation of Hidden Hot Springs inn? (Stamp books are available at each inn.) ^^ We’ll show you Okuyama Ryokan’s wonderful stamp at the end of the video. ^^ Okuyama Ryokan is a participating facility of JR East and THE ONSEN, a carefully selected network of traditional hot springs from across eastern Japan . JR East offers limited-time accommodation plans and campaigns at these facilities. From the Kanto region, it’s approximately 100 minutes from the Furukawa Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway! It takes about 45 minutes by Komachi Shuttle or shared taxi from JR Yuzawa Station , and the somewhat steep roads make it a truly remote inn. Enter through the historic entrance, featuring a large thatched roof and reclaimed wood pillars and beams. A large kokeshi (front-hanging plum blossom kokeshi) welcomes you in the front lobby, perfectly recreating the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese inn. The front desk features a transom reminiscent of an old inn, and various payment methods are available . Amenities are available at the front desk. Former Prime Minister Suga, a native of Yuzawa City, has a personalized yukata (a work kimono is available in the rooms). The library features shogi pieces, playing cards, karuta, and other items. The drinks and exhibition corner ( Kawarage Jigoku) is featured at the end of the video. Coffee and tea are free. There are no vending machines, but there are beers and soft drinks available for purchase in the refrigerator. We checked in at the shop next to the front desk , got a mud bath , and were given an explanation of the building, bath, and room. This plan includes two meals and is available by phone only. It’s a special room with a cypress bath, the only one available. The accommodation fee will be explained in the room introduction section. About the Rooms: There are nine guest rooms in total, eight on the second floor, with river and mountain views. There is one special room with a hot spring on the first floor. All rooms have Japanese-style beds and toilets. They do not have air conditioning, televisions, or refrigerators (these are easily damaged by hydrogen sulfide). Rates are flat-rate, starting at 19,950 yen on weekdays (excluding holidays and peak periods). Single-person plans are also available. Here’s a room review: “Koshiabura” (Koshiabura), a special room with a cypress bath, a closet , and a stylish bath basket. The bath basket (for women) contains a samue (work clothes), towels, Sekkisei women’s cosmetics, tabi socks, and more . The face towel is personalized. The hotel was newly built in 2019, so the entire facility is very new. The bedroom and living room are spacious enough! The sound and view of the Takamatsu River are soothing. The ceiling and beams are made of old wood . The beds are Japanese-style. There were three types of tea and snacks available. There was also a greeting card and postcard from the owner. ^^ There is a fan, but no air conditioner, refrigerator, or TV in the room. Apparently, the strong acidity of hydrogen sulfide easily damages home appliances. 😢 Wi-Fi is available in the room, and cell phone reception is also good. The bathroom, toilet, and bath space include a hair dryer and toothbrush provided in the sink. There’s a curtain at the back, but it’s actually a toilet. ^^ The toilet has a washlet. The cypress bath in the room is truly magnificent . The atmosphere, size, and color of the water are truly amazing. Opening the window creates a semi-open-air atmosphere . The bathtub is made entirely of cypress. The source of the bath is “Tengu no Yu,” a very spacious room . The sulfur smell throughout the inn is so strong that it numbs your nose. ^^ Although it’s diluted, it’s a free-flowing hot spring. The shampoos are DHC. I tried on women’s cosmetics such as cleansing cream and a work kimono ^^ The bath is outside, so the work kimono is good 👍 Now, let’s get started… about the baths . Okuyama Ryokan has three hot springs, and the water is drawn from the springs by taking advantage of the difference in elevation. All of them are “mud baths,” where hot spring deposits accumulate like mud at the bottom of an acidic sulfur spring . Water may be added, but the water is basically directly drawn from the source. I’ll start by introducing the men’s bath in the large public bath. Go outside from the lobby. Change into outdoor shoes and go down the stairs to find the hot spring building. The men’s bath in the hot spring building has Tengu no Yu (pH 3.7, simple sulfur spring, water temperature 72°C) in both the indoor and outdoor baths . There was a Tengu there ^^ The changing area in the men’s bath is small, with only nine rooms. There was a hair dryer in the sink. Men’s Bath The indoor bath has a wonderful atmosphere, with the entire area surrounded by wood . The bath is also large and made of wood, and can comfortably fit 7-8 people. The surrounding area is white with chalk-like deposits. The color of the water is more off-white than milky white. The special feature is… can I scoop it up? (^^♪ I scooped up a lot^^ It’s just like mud!😳 The bottom is fluffy and full of mud😆 The indoor bath is adjusted to a comfortable temperature – a little warmer. The hot spring is free-flowing, but because it’s so high, water is added. It’s murky and you can’t see underneath, so… It’s best to hold onto the handrails when entering. There are plenty of washing areas with showers. The shampoo is DHC. There’s sticky mud splattered on the walls 😆 The floor is slippery with mud so be careful ^^ The stairs also have a nice atmosphere 👍 Mixed outdoor bath The overall wooden atmosphere is wonderful, and there’s a mountain stream flowing on the left side. There are two baths, one above and one below, and they’re the same size. The upper bath seems to be adjusted to be hotter, and the lower one to be lukewarm. The hot spring is hot 😆 Wooden handrails are well provided 👍 At first glance, it’s hard to tell where to walk 😅 They look almost the same, but this one is much warmer This door is a connecting passage from the women’s bath Women can enter but men can’t exit ^^ This is what it looks like when you’re bathing The sound of the stream and the view are wonderful ♪ Next is the women ‘s bath The changing area is the same size but a little different There are lockers with locks. There are also two sinks in the washbasin. Women’s bath The atmosphere of the indoor bath is very nice, just like the men’s bath👍 The bath is made of stone, but it looks like it can comfortably fit 7 or 8 people. The hot water is Tengu no Yu, just like the men’s bath. The washing area is the same. There is DHC shampoo and cleansing products. The women’s only open-air bath is very different from the men’s open-air bath, as it is a rock bath. There is a roof and a screen, but it has a sense of openness♪ The women’s only open-air bath is “Kawa no Yu”, a pH 5.8 simple sulfur spring with a water temperature of 77℃. There are sturdy handrails provided. From this door… you can go to the mixed bathing open-air bath. The large open-air bath is completely independent outside. The entrance has a unique atmosphere . In winter, a fire is lit in the wood stove here. The men’s bath is on the right and the women’s bath is on the left. The large open-air bath is “Shinyu”, a pH 3.8 simple hot spring with a water temperature of 88℃. Large open-air bath Women’s bath Changing space It is a simple changing area, but it is spacious enough. A wonderful bath I’m impressed . A sense of openness It’s amazing! The bathtub is made of stone but is very spacious and seems to be able to fit around 30 people. Shinyu is a simple hot spring, but the colour is similar and, as expected, mud accumulates at the bottom. Next is the men’s bath . The changing area is the same as the women’s bath. Large open-air bath The men’s bath is in a slightly different location so the view is also slightly different. The hot spring can be seen going down the slope in the distance . It is also a large bath and is open-air . There are lots of handprints in the mud on the walls! Both baths are completely open-air baths. Let’s try the bath in our room ^^ You can’t see underneath so you have to be careful when you get in ^^ There is actually a step on the edge so I’m not sure how strong the sulfur smell is from this bath 😅 I think it’s rare to find an inn where you can enjoy such a rich sulfur spring bath in your room. The top of the bathtub is made of wood but the bottom is made of stone. You won’t get any mud in this bath, It may be different depending on the time. The hot spring water is too hot to touch. The room temperature is adjusted to a comfortable temperature. The front desk can help you adjust the temperature. It’s a luxury to be able to enjoy a private bath like this. It’s dinner time♪ We had dinner at a table in the dinner hall on the first floor. Each room has its own seat, and we were seated at the very back. The drink menu is a simple double-page spread. We start off with a toast with an aperitif (Japanese sake), which includes draft beer, local sake, and soft drinks ! Aperitif It’s a luxurious meal with two Dainagawa Tenka hotpots from Yokote City (^^♪ Minase beef rib roast steak Iwate duck hotpot Akita mountain delicacies and seafood I’ll introduce them to you now ♪ Today’s menu Oga turban shells lol They’re so big I was surprised 😳 I removed the liver, but they’re still big enough even without the liver ^^ The sound is amazing 😳 Pumpkin and maitake mushroom chawanmushi This is a sweet chawanmushi from Akita, made with bonito broth and sugar. It contains a large pumpkin . Black soybean natto from the most expensive natto shop in Japan Yamagake This is natto from Fukuya in Yokote City, the most “ambitious” shop in Japan, which is particular about the taste of the beans. It is characterized by the softness of the black beans. It is topped with rice dumplings and grated yam . Bamboo shoots simmered in miso Mizuno knot Matsumae pickles The texture is great when you chew it ~ Boiled fern The long fern is boiled as is ^^ Sorry, that sounds vulgar 😅 It’s not like that at all lol Kombu- jime carp This is farmed carp from Yokobori, Yuzawa City. It looks cherry blossom pink and very beautiful ♪ The texture is soft and has no strong flavor, making it very easy to eat carp sashimi. The flavor of the kombu-jime is also very good ♪ Maitake mushroom, okra, and asparagus tempura Looks freshly fried and delicious ♪ The okra tempura is all crispy and has a great texture ♪ Maitake mushroom tempura Maitake mushroom tempura is a classic ♪ Minase beef rib roast steak It’s piping hot and looks delicious 😋 Minase beef is said to be a mythical beef because of the small number of shipments. First, salt it and slice it thick, but it’s soft and crispy 👍 Iwate duck hotpot It also contains lots of vegetables Shunzodo, Yuzawa City Inaniwa Udon Shunzodo’s Inaniwa Udon There are many brands of Inaniwa Udon The thin, soft noodles go down smoothly and are refreshing. Grilled Salt Trout A large trout with a chunk of salt on it ^^ First, I eat the tail It makes a huge noise 😳 Should I remove the tail or eat it as is… I decided to remove it ^^ The freshly grilled trout is perfectly salted and delicious! Sasaichi’s Akita Komachi, Naratake miso soup “Black bean natto from the most expensive natto shop in Japan” that I had left over , instead of nameko mushrooms, I used Naratake In Akita, it’s called “Motashi (Modashi)”. Today’s gelato was miso caramel flavoured 😳 The local Akita produce, both mountain and sea, was amazing 🤗 The tea was self-service and we enjoyed the sencha and roasted green tea 🙏 Night view Indoor bath Mixed outdoor bath Large outdoor bath From the large outdoor bath we could see the starry sky 👍 Time lapse footage from our room Good night~ Zzz Coffee available from 7am What a great start to the day ♪ Mud smeared on my face this morning 🤗 It’s time for breakfast . Breakfast is served in the same venue. A truly luxurious breakfast! Grilled salmon, green beans with miso, bracken , boiled cucumber, okra, pickles, natto, miso soup, and mud bath. ^^ lol Now, let’s eat! ^^ The rice was served in an Akita bento box. 👍 The rice was Akita Komachi rice, piping hot and looked delicious. 😋 The salad was free to refill . The dressing was original, with smoked daikon radish tartar sauce and carrots. The smoked daikon radish tartar sauce was rich. ^^ Next was the carrot dressing, which was also rich. 👍 Steamed daikon radish with sweet miso sauce. ♪ The miso soup was topped with daikon radish and deep-fried tofu. Freshly baked bread was brought out. ^^ Aikawa Farm Tadashi’s rice flour bread was toasted in the toaster. ♪ The jam was blueberry and cherry, also original. 👍 Freshly baked bread. ♪ Wow, this looks delicious! 😋 I ‘ll have grilled salmon with fluffy cherry jam, green beans with miso, bracken, and a soft-boiled egg . There was a little bit of everything, and it was great. I ate it all~^^ Breakfast was also packed with mountain delicacies, and there was a wide variety, so I was very satisfied♪ I’ll finish off today with some green tea . Thank you for the meal🙏 Check-out: Okuyama Ryokan, Doroyu Onsen , Akita Prefecture. What did you think? It was a wonderful stay, a once-in-a-lifetime experience, enjoying the rich mud hot springs and local Akita ingredients . I received a secret hot spring stamp♪ After checking out… I headed up the inner road… and arrived at Kawarage Jigoku, about a five-minute drive away. A truly hellish scene unfolded before my eyes . Kawarage Jigoku is considered one of Japan’s three most sacred places, alongside Mount Osore in Aomori and Mount Tateyama in Toyama, and is also visited by many tourists. It is said to have a total of 136 hells, including a paradise. This time, I’ll walk to Kawarage Oyutaki Falls. Walking sticks were available for borrowing. ^^ A man and woman in their 50s were already feeling uneasy. lol The smell of sulfur wafted through the air . Hydrogen sulfide smoke was spewing out along the way. Light clothing was fine, but the footing was rough, so caution was required. After about 15 minutes of walking, taking breaks along the way, a parking lot came into view in the distance . If you’re just going to Kawarage Jizo Bosatsu Oyutaki Falls, it’s recommended to drive to this parking lot and walk there. Kawarage Onsen is highly acidic with a pH of 1.4. ^^ The river along the way is a hot spring. The road along the way is quite steep 😱 If you go down from here… you can see it in the distance… an amazing view spreads before you (^^/ All the water flowing from the waterfall is an inspiring view that makes you forget the hardships of getting to the hot spring 😭 At around 40°C, it’s just the right temperature for a soak (^^♪ There are many people in swimsuits in the water. The water is a pale green and very beautiful. There are also proper changing rooms available. Now it’s time to head home 😅 The way back is mostly uphill ^^ We took a break along the way… lol I received a great quote ^^ I survived hell ~ (^^/ It’s close to Okuyama Ryokan, so please do check it out ^^ Food, drinks, and services may be subject to change, so please check the official website for the latest information before heading out
