This time, I visited a World Heritage site surrounded by mountains at an altitude of about 800 meters. Enjoy the world of one of Japan’s major Buddhist sacred sites. The journey starts at Osaka Namba Station. This time, we’re heading to Mount Koya in Wakayama Prefecture, next to Osaka. For the trip to Mount Koya, I recommend a reserved seat on the limited express train. Today, I’m boarding the limited express train “Koya.” Its retro look is adorable. All seats on the limited express train are reserved. With the limited express, you’re guaranteed a seat and don’t need to switch trains. This is my seat! Now, let’s begin the approximately 1 hour and 30 minute train ride. The best season to visit Mount Koya is early November. Autumn is when the leaves on Mount Koya are at their most beautiful, so I’m really looking forward to it. After the train ride, we’ll transfer to the Mount Koya Cable Car. The cable car covers a height difference of 328 meters in about 5 minutes. Since it’s the best season, the car is packed. Arriving at Mount Koya Station. At this altitude, the surroundings are shrouded in mist! It’s pretty cold! To reach the center of Mount Koya, we need to take a bus from here. The bus ride takes about 20 minutes. Getting to Mount Koya from Namba Station feels like a mini-trip! It takes quite a bit of time. I can see the town coming into view! Mount Koya is a sacred Buddhist site with over 1,200 years of history. It houses around 117 temples, making it a World Heritage site rich in religious history. Out of these 117 temples, 52 offer lodging for general visitors. The temple lodge I’m staying at is about a 5-minute walk from Senjuinbashi Station. Mount Koya Ichijoin Temple. I chose a lodging plan that accommodates solo travelers this time. As I proceed through the solemn and majestic entrance, I can see the temple I’ll be staying in. Check-in is at 3:00 p.m. At the Nokyojo, they sell items related to Mount Koya, such as books, amulets, and incense. The lodging includes an “upper tier room” designed for feudal lords to stay in. You’re free to enter and look around. Photography was not allowed in the main hall this time, but permission was granted for other areas. I’ll be staying in a single-occupancy room named “Sara.” Wow! It’s beautiful! The room is 8 tatami mats in size (about 12–15 square meters). From the large windows, you can enjoy the seasonal views of the fountain garden. It’s such a luxury to have this space all to myself. Koi fish are swimming gracefully. So cute… There’s an extra futon in the closet. There’s also a refrigerator and a safe. The entrance includes a sink and a toilet. Since Kobo Daishi Kukai founded it as a Shingon Buddhism training site, Mount Koya has developed into Japan’s largest religious city over 1,200 years. The room has books that contain the teachings of Kukai. Applications for offerings and prayers can be submitted from the room. The shelf next to the hanging scroll has tea, a hot water pot, and a drink menu. Making tea with a teapot feels very Japanese and lovely. They also sell beverages for a fee. You can purchase local sake from Wakayama and soft drinks made with fruits. There were two types of sweets on the table. “Miroku Stone” by Kasakuni, a long-established Japanese confectionery store in Koyasan with over 150 years of history. It’s filled with sweet bean paste! Delicious! Next, a cracker called “Koya Rokki.” It has a crispy texture and melts in your mouth. Hmm, dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. They seem to have Facebook and Instagram accounts. On the table, there’s an information guide about Ichijoin and Mount Koya. Since there’s a bit of time before dinner, I think I’ll take a slow stroll around the facility. Unfortunately, photography was not allowed inside the main hall. There’s also a Buddhist ritual tool called “Gomagi,” used for offering prayers, for sale within the hall. As I wandered around, I arrived at a spot with a beautiful garden spread out before me. It’s such a peaceful and reassuring atmosphere. There’s also a nostalgic payphone and vending machines inside. Very retro! The three main sightseeing spots at Mount Koya are Danjo Garan, Kongobuji Temple, and Okunoin Temple. Since Danjo Garan, a popular spot at Mount Koya, is near the lodging, I decided to visit. At the entrance of Danjo Garan is the central gate, called “Chumon.” The giant 16-meter-tall gate has statues of the Four Heavenly Kings installed. Whoa… They look pretty scary. Even though I haven’t done anything wrong, I feel like apologizing. After passing through Chumon, I arrive at the famous “Danjo Garan.” Danjo Garan is the first site developed by Kukai when he opened Mount Koya. Established in 817 with his disciples, it took over ten to twenty years to complete. I came to enjoy the autumn leaves at Mount Koya, but they’ve only just started to turn this year. Maybe I came a bit too early? Walking in the ancient natural surroundings clears my mind and makes me feel refreshed. The time is 5:30 p.m. Dinner is brought to my room. Each dish is carefully and beautifully arranged. Dinner is a vegetarian Buddhist cuisine called “Shojin Ryori,” with no meat or fish. “Shojin” means to abstain from evil, do good, and diligently pursue virtue. In the Shojin Ryori at Ichijoin, they actively use vegetables grown without fertilizers or pesticides, called “natural farming.” In Buddhism, food is considered a form of training. It looks beautiful and luxurious, despite having no meat or fish. Here is Yuba sashimi. Its smooth texture and refined taste are exquisite. Ichijoin’s Shojin Ryori incorporates vegetables grown using “natural farming” without fertilizers or pesticides. The dishes flavored with kombu dashi are delicate and delicious. Perfect for autumn: tempura of autumn leaves. And here’s a sesame-dressed dish with abalone mushroom and seri greens. Speaking of Mount Koya, there’s goma (sesame) tofu. It’s creamy and super delicious. The texture is like pudding. While eating, I received steamed and fried dishes. The steamed dish is kabocha bun, and the fried one is a croquette of soy milk cheese and mushrooms. White rice is provided upon request. The kabocha bun is chewy and so tasty. As you can see, it has a nice, bouncy texture. The sauce is maitake mushroom-based. The croquette, of course, doesn’t contain meat. The soy milk cheese is creamy and delicious! The noodle dish is Yuba somen. Whoa! Such a big Yuba! I’ll enjoy it with komatsuna, pickled plum, and tororo kombu. It warms both my stomach and heart. For dessert, grapes and pear. It was a satisfying, delicious, and healthy meal! In November, the night temperature at Mount Koya drops to 9°C. I’m heading to the bath. The room has a yukata, towel, and toothbrush. Ichijoin’s large bath uses precious spring water from Mount Koya, heated for bathing. When I returned to the room, the futon had already been prepared. Goodnight… Good morning, everyone. It’s 7:00 a.m., time for breakfast. The breakfast is also lavish. There’s also a hot pot with yuba, lettuce, mushrooms, and mochi. Seeing a hot pot at a ryokan, cooking on the table, is exciting, isn’t it? The soup is already flavored, so there’s no need for extra sauce. Breakfast is also a luxurious Shojin Ryori meal. There’s rice, miso soup, and several side dishes. Rice is prepared in an ohitsu, allowing you to eat as much as you want. I’m already full from breakfast. After a few minutes, the hot pot is ready. The ingredients are simple, but very delicious. The mochi is a bit hard to grab… Shojin Ryori is made from grains, beans, vegetables, and other plant-based ingredients. Here’s a dish called ganmodoki, made to resemble meat or fish. The dessert is a pear compote. With such delicious and luxurious meals, I could eat this every day. Check-out is at 10:00 a.m. Staying at a temple lodge at Mount Koya, surrounded by tranquility and nature, was a precious experience that allowed me to forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life and truly relax. Where should I go next? Thank you for watching until the end!

1:08 – nice editing touch – too few people give a clearer view/more info like this.
Thank you for a wonderful video! Such a lovely and peaceful stay.

Thank you for a lovely video. Please do more like this. It's so lovely to see tradition and customs.

I'm From India😊😊
That was a beautiful video.
Thanks for you videos!
i keep waiting for a video 😁
Japan 🇯🇵 is an amazing and inspiring country 😺👍.
And this channel deserves a new subscriber from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮 😺👍.
Thank you 😸😺👍.
When I was a kid we lived along the Nankai Rail Koya line before moving to US. The Hawks baseball stadium was right near Namba terminal (the start of the video)
Thanks for the nostalgia. (although it looks nothing like I remember).
This place looks so cool 😮
👍👍👍👍👍
That looked so tranquil and relaxing
❤ from the UK
Citadina carina koyasan❤❤
Camera e giardino in stile giapponese sono stupendi
Davero una localita stupenda imersa in una natutra altretanto bella ❤❤ e buonissimo cibo vegetariano😊😊
What a stunning place with a long history. ❤
I visited Koyasan and stayed in temple lodgings back in 2000. It was a wonderful visit; a very special place. I enjoyed watching this and being reminded of it.

Great Video… as always. Iove your vids. Thank you 👍👍👍
Honestly, I would be bored, and isn't that how life is? Though it is a nice pace.
I remember Koyasan as very tranquil and healing. Oku no In was especially magnificent, and a slightly frightening place. I certainly believed in spirits when visited.
Just gotten back from Japan yesterday! Wished I've seen your video earlier, as I was in Osaka for 4nights, before flying off to Fukuoka for anotger 4nights..guess, I'll have more excuses for another trip next year to Japan ❤
Always delightful Someday!

Text and unnecessary black background is WAY too big.
