Epic Fail! My Vietnam Bike Tour Isn’t Going As Planned 🇻🇳
Good morning everyone from Lang Son Been here for about 3 days. Nice and rested. It’s time to get back on the
bike and uh do some more cycling. We are going to go I think around
63.8 kilometers to the next town. So the idea is to keep heading towards Hajjang. And so that’s the that’s the end goal. We’ll see if I make it. It’s been a good good two days here. Nice and rested. I had to get some work done on the bike. And so, basically, they were busted. And so, there was a there’s a wire on the bottom
of the bike that had split and busted open. Looked pretty serious. Luckily, there was a guy here
in Langan that took care of me. Uh, honestly saved my Vietnam bike tour. Otherwise, I think I would have had
to go back to Hanoi, get a fix there. But dude, guy took care of me. Very happy. I think this is my Oh, upstairs. I’ll eat outside. Outside. [Music] That looks delicious. Thank you. Mhm. Some fried rice with chicken. Some fresh veggies and soup. Are you kidding me? This is exactly what I need to start my day. Bone appetite. Man, this looks amazing. Try this soup. [Music] Oh yeah. Oh yeah. That’s good. That’s fresh. A little salty. Good. Crunchy bean sprouts. All right. This chicken looks nice. Nice. I think I’m supposed to dip
it in this sauce right here. M. Kind of like a a soy sauce. Soy sauce sauce right here. Soy sauce. All right, let’s try the fried rice. I love it how they cover in all
these fried shallotss right here. Oh, it’s pretty tasty. Oh man, would you look at that. So, I don’t have a drone, so I
got to work for my aerial shots. But, uh, thankfully there’s this small
little mountain right in the middle of town. Huge flag, huge flag pole up there. And yeah, let you get a a nice view of Lan. I believe somewhere off in
that direction would be China. We’re pretty close. And I think we’re heading that way today. Beautiful. Beautiful. All right, the weather looking
kind of eh off in this direction. Looking kind of gray. Hopefully it stays over there. It’s actually kind of chilly in the mornings, too. I’m guessing the higher you go up, obviously
it’s going to get a little more cooler, so nice. Okay, let’s go that way. Um, we’re going to go to I
think Dang Dong or Dong Dang. I’m not really sure, but it’s uh
it’s a city about 15 km that way. It’s right next to China. It borders China actually. You can cross into China if uh
if I had a visa, but I don’t. But we might go check it out. Wow. Welcome to Dang Dong, a major border
crossing between Vietnam and China. You can see how many trucks pass through here. Let’s see what the local dong market looks like. [Music] Yeah, just about every market you
can find live chickens ready to go. And so I don’t know if they’ll
slice them up for you here. I’m sure they will, but doesn’t
get any fresher than that. And then they have just all
the meat out in the open here. Hello. Hello. Hello. Good morning. Hello. Hello. I don’t know. Good morning. Good morning. And I know what you’re thinking. Like, I don’t know if I’d buy any of that. But at the same time, if you plan on
eating at any restaurant here in Vietnam, most likely the meat came from a place like this. So, you’re going to eat it one way or the
other, whether you buy it directly or not. [Music] I don’t need that many bananas, though. Hello. Half. [Laughter] No. No, no, no. No. [Music] Here it is. Right here. These tracks right here will
go all the way into Hanoi. And this way goes into China. I was trying to follow it on Google
Maps and it goes for a really long way. I think uh the biggest town
from here is maybe Naning. It’s a happening little place down here, isn’t it? [Music] Suzuki. All right. I was uh just checking out
Google Maps just to see if there’s anything worth checking
out in this small little town. And uh this might be the only thing. There might be a few other things,
but they’re kind of high up in the mountains and uh I don’t want to go up there. But this one in the middle of town. [Music] off that direction about a 100 meters
is the border between Vietnam and China. And yeah, it’s basically just right on the other side of that very cool
looking mountain right there. Another doggy that needs a nice grooming. All right. And so this right here looks like the
closest point between Vietnam and China. Just right on the other side of
that huge high rock right there. I bet if you played your music loud enough,
people on the other side could probably hear it. Crazy. Hello. Hello. [Music] Where are you from? I’m from America. Are you from uh are you from here? Dong. Yes. Yes. All right. Damn. That don’t look too bad, does it? I uh pulled off on the side of the road and uh I saw a bunch of people in here
eating soup that look kind of Korean. I mean, look at this bowl. Most Korean thing I’ve seen so far in Vietnam. And this kind of looks like bud. We got some noodles, bean
sprouts, some beef, some hot dogs. Let’s uh let’s see how it tastes. Not that bad. It’s pretty damn good, actually. Still love when I get like a strange look. You catch somebody off guard, they look at
you like, “What the hell are you doing here?” Pretty cool little town. Pretty busy. The rock mountains that
surround it are pretty cool. A lot of honking. Hello. Hello. Hello. How are you? I’m I’m good. I’m fine. YouTube YouTube. Yeah, man. Look at that rock. Hangs over the road right here. You imagine living right there? Right underneath this rock. Crazy. There’s a cave down there. Woo. What a spot. [Music] Good morning from some little
small town in northern Vietnam. I don’t know. That sign might give you an idea where I’m at. Well, change of plans, guys. Change of plans. Welcome to my life. Uh, we’re heading back to Hanoi. First, we’re going to head back to Langan. I, uh, I’m having some trouble with the bike. Um, the gears and the chain. It’s just slipping. Every time I go up a hill, when I put it in the
lowest gears, it just slips and slips and slips. And so, I thought when I got the cables
fixed, it would fix that problem. No, just that was just a separate problem. And so, uh, this is what you kind of get when you get somebody who doesn’t know anything
about bikes but wants to do a bike tour. And so, you got to learn the hard way. And so, this is something I I should
have got fixed a long time ago. It was starting to slip a little
bit when I was in Korea even. And now it’s just really bad. And so, the uh the area that I want
to go to is called the Hajjang Loop. It is like 3 1,500 meter inclines and
I’m like there’s no way I can do it. And so I’m going to go ahead and throw
in the towel here in northern Vietnam, go back to Hanoi, fix the bike up,
you know, get a new chain, get a new uh I think it’s called a cassette,
and then kind of start going south. And so I got a buddy coming to meet me. I’m really excited about that. And so his date is already set. And so I I have about a week from
today to get to where I need to be. So we’re not going to explore more
of North Vietnam, unfortunately. But the Vietnam trip does not end here. Got to get some coffee. I cycled through this little small town
yesterday and I was just struggling up the small hills and I was like,
man, this is not going to work. Uh heading back to Lancong,
basically where I started yesterday. And then um I should be able
to catch a train back to Hanoi. So that’ll be an adventure in itself. So I’ll do uh okay one bomb meat sandwich. I’m sweet little old lady. Okay. Only 10,000. Are you kidding me? With sausage. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Well, that’s going to be 20,000. I think I And cilantro. Cilantro and chili. Yes. Okay. [Music] Love the coffee here. And there she is. My beautiful $8 a night hotel. Can’t beat it. Good morning. Good morning. [Music] Can I have a photo of you and then your baby? Yeah, of course. Yeah. You okay? Oh, with the sign. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Come here. Come here. [Music] Oh, perfect. Perfect. You’re just putting your head
right on my shoulder now. This it. Okay. Okay. Okay. All right. Got to figure out how to get the bike on here. Okay. Bye. Bye. Bye. Okay. [Music] All right. All right. Come on. Thank you. All right, we on the bus. We are on a bus. Yeah, it worked out. There’s actually uh some storage. Not a whole lot, but at the rear end of the
bus on the bottom, plenty of space for my bike. Oh yeah. Jump up here to the front. That’s where the action is. [Music] Of course.
That’s freaking delicious. Sweet. Okay. Come on. Sweet. And I got a bag that’s already cut. Sweet. Even better. [Music] [Music] Not a bad snack. They’re really good. Check it out. The beautiful Langan Station. Doesn’t look like there are
any trains to Hanoi, though. I came here and the guys over here looked
at me like, “What you doing here, man?” Uh, I think the bus is going to be the
only option, but let’s go check it out. Let’s go see what a rural
Vietnamese train station looks like. One doesn’t take any passengers to Hanoi. Yeah, it doesn’t look like it’s
been in service for a while. It’s pretty pretty empty. Nobody. Come on. No trains to Hanoi. Hello. I mean, you can walk just right out here. And uh I guess that’s it. Maybe these guys will know. Is it possible to take a
train from here into Hanoi? No. No. Only bus. Bus. Okay. Oh man. Just slapped my head on that right there. Oh god. Oh man, ain’t no tall people
here in Vietnam, I guess. Oh, took one step off, had the head down, and bam. Oh, man. [Music] Uh, oh, Hanoi. and erased Hanoi for whatever reason. So I was like, I want to take a
bus and she’s like to where dude, perfect. Just put the whole thing on there. Don’t have to take the back off or nothing. Oh, hello. Hello. Smells good. Stuffed with all those herbs and spices. That is freaking delicious, too. Riding this beauty all the way to Hanoi. cut off a huge slab and take it home. That’s wild. [Music] Fantastic, man. Got to get some to go. That just looks too good. Come on. Thank you. Good. Sorry. So juicy. Good. Wow. [Music] All right, guys. We made it. Welcome back to Hanoi. Welcome back to the jungle. First stop, the bike.
Doing my best to reach Ha Giang, but things haven’t gone as planned. A lot of it comes down to me shooting myself in the foot and not preparing properly for a ride this demanding. I should have checked my bike more carefully and fixed it before taking on such a tough challenge. Because of that, I have to turn back and head to Hanoi to get things sorted.
In the end though, it’s all part of the adventure, and I still get to experience another side of Vietnam.
Dream big and live on!

Thank you for the video, Nick! I was worried you might have been hurt or stranded by the typhoons. One last thing you need for the bus ride — a crying baby, haha. I hope your bike can be repaired once you get to Hanoi.
How come a few ladies set up their food stands right in the middle of the 3 way road? Only happens in Vietnam.
It's OK Nick. You're not the first or the only foreigners that have to throw in the towel against VN 😆😆😆 Just kidding, had to throw that into the comment as a compliment towards the Vietnamese.
Hello mr, big stick? 😂😂😂😂 are you healthy?
Nick, go home
I know i should feel bad but i cant help but laughed so hard when you explained how you got slapped by the wall 😂😭
Hey Nick! Looks like your Marin’s got some transmission issues. You’re the engine, the drivetrain’s the transmission — don’t cheap out on it! Stick with the original cassette or better, and get a top-quality chain since 100km a day will stretch it fast and wreck the new $200 cassette quick. Your 11-speed SRAM derailleur’s probably getting tired too.
While you’re at it, check your bottom bracket bearings, hub bearings, and spokes too. I would replace all the cables and housing. Take care of your bike, and it’ll take care of you.
벳남 전도로가 난장판인데 자전거여행 악몽,
Watch your head ! You are too tall guy
16:40 저거 진짜 생각 못하다가 박으면 엄청 아픈데 ㅜㅜ ㅋㅋ 혹은 안났나요 닉 ?? ㅋㅋ 조심하세요 !!!!
No worries, repairs to the bike make the series even more realistic, luckily you’re okay except for the bump. Is that why you put the hat for ?
What are you doing out there? Come back to S.K.—you know you want to!
A head bang, that seems pretty painful. Hope it didn't leave a bruise and you've healed by now. I hope the bike got properly fixed and you're on your merry way to wherever you're heading at this moment. Always take care and safe travels, Nick!
닉, 가을 단풍을 즐기며 자전거여행할 가정적기인데 😂

Be careful where you walk in the future!
Giving up on going north and returning to Hanoi to repair your bicycle was a wise decision!
Take good care! Happy travels! 👍🥰🙏
Ha Giang is truly beautiful. If you love untouched nature, ancient villages, and ethnic cultures, you should definitely try to explore it. After that, you can visit Ta Xua, Cao Bang, and Ban Gioc Waterfall — all of them are around the Ha Giang area.
I hope you always have a safe trip. 😌👍
Are you will be going to thailand-cambodia border's mas nick?
