in the mountains of Morocco lies a place that few dare to visit just outside the peaceful town of Ifrane there’s a hospital that was once one of the largest in North Africa now it’s a ruin swallowed by time and silence built in the 1940s as a tuberculosis sanatorium it treated hundreds of patient who came here to breathe the pure mountain air but after it closed decades ago stories began to spread of strange noises flickering lights and shadows that move when no one’s there this is the abandoned Bensmim Hospital one of Morocco’s eerier forgotten places hi everyone we’re on the road now on the way to Ifrane which is about an hour away from Fes and it’s also high up in the Middle Atlas Mountains and this place is very clean and it’s a very unusual place in Morocco it’s also known as the mini Switzerland of Africa and you can totally feel that it’s a lot colder here the temperature is dropping a lot while we’re driving ifrane doesn’t look like the rest of Morocco it was built by the French during the protectorate as a mountain resort for colonial officers with its Alpine style houses pine forests and snow in winter it feels more like Europe than North Africa but hidden just outside the city down a narrow forest road stands something completely different a relic of that same colonial era the Ben Smim Hospital a massive hospital complex built by the French in 1948 for tuberculosis patients it once had 400 beds treatment halls gyms and seminar rooms it closed in the 1970s and ever since stories of strange lights slamming doors and unexplained events have circulated we just parked the car on the edge of the forest and we’re now gonna cross the forest to reach the building we’re in the middle of the forest here and there is an old camping commune here that is left that is not in use anymore but you can see these old structures and I think they used to put tents on there maybe or maybe this was for like temporary housing but uh it’s all abandoned now too here are some old houses left from the camping you can see that this has been abandoned for a while because everything is just rusty these goats are making some very creepy sounds from here we can already see the building all the way up there on the mountain in this part of Morocco there are also wolves in the forest um so hope we don’t encounter those I hope they only come out at night but I’m not sure of that this whole region is called the Bensmim community and it connects azrou with the national park of ifrane and I think that most people live here they’re farmers and they are herding the sheep and the goats here and they also live on the land here oh my God look Achraf come here quickly that goat has been following us it’s like the big one with the big horns and it just looking there at us I hope it won’t attack us yeah let’s let’s go bit quicker now these are the old toilets from the camping we have to now go all the way towards that hill there let’s go someone has still made a campfire here recently because I can feel it’s still warm do you have bears in Morocco any other dangerous animals you used to have lions here yeah in this forest well I do not want to encounter them today this is shirt from someone Achraf Achraf Achraf oh here I can see the hospital already better look wow being on that mountain it just looks like that hotel from The Shining it literally has eagles flying over it what what could make it scarier OK this you have to just run a little bit like this look Achraf there’s someone working here look Achraf there’s someone working here really there at the river we’re now at the foot of the hill where the hospital is so from here on up it’s just upwards I can see it Achraf it’s here across the meadows I don’t wanna stay too long in the open because someone might see us here look Achraf over there there’s already a house there was someone moving there wallah I saw someone standing on and there’s a dog there look there’s already a structure here in the forest let’s check out what that is what is this I think this is like a water filter station or something these pipes go very deep let’s go here it is we’re at the front side of the hospital it’s a bone from a a deer maybe or a sheep I think so so scary now we have to look for the way to get in but we have to be very careful because of course these ruins were not made for tourists oh look there’s even a peacock here on the side of the hospital wow these are my favourite animals together with a fox that’s a sign that’s a good sign in some cultures like in the Persian culture I think it brings luck when you see a fox really yeah and a peacock? maybe too let’s just say that it does there’s so much glass laying from all the windows here probably people have broken all the windows and all the shards are laying here someone has also used the opportunity to put beehives here this building is very majestic there’s like a very big hall there in the front and all the windows are blown out let’s see if we can enter somewhere from here maybe we should be able to enter through these windows there is a door there but there’s some obstruction here maybe we can uh enter from here let’s try okay we found the way in we just crawled through all these branches no one saw us and now we can explore wow this looks so big wow look at this, this is an old elevator shaft oh and the elevator is still in there if this falls down now you have this final destination scene where your head is decapitated oh my God when it was built this hospital was one of the first of its kind and it was one of the most modern hospitals in the world at the time wow oh I think I think this is the theatre hall cause I read that they used to have a cinema here yeah cause it’s also some sort of a sanatorium so people that had tuberculosis would come here and then they also had like retreats and stuff here wow look at the star in 1956 this hospital was also visited by the king uh Muhammad the fifth and that’s actually very interesting because this place was also used by dissidents who were planning an attack on the king before the king Hassan the second they were trying to assassinate him and they would convene these quarters in secret to plan that this hospital has more than 400 rooms so it’s very easy to get lost in there’s dining halls here and kitchens and morgues and of course patient halls and a cinema so much here wow look at all these mattresses here that are left here maybe this is a this is probably from the patients that died here maybe but what’s that this is where I heard something these patients at least had a good view let’s go to the top floor this place has been looted entirely because it has been empty for many years oh my God I could I swear to God there was a door that opened there all the way in the end see see look the all the way in the back I wanna go oh my God wow I think this is either where they did surgeries or this must have been a morgue what all the stop it all the lights used to be in here and then maybe this is where they put a body in no that’s as big as a panini well I thought maybe like oh yes it’s an airtight door do not have any bacteria coming I wonder what this is I think this must have been used maybe on the side to like as a sort of a storage for patients oh my God what let’s go up here let’s go here let’s go here this is the top floor I think these uh because these rooms are next to the rooms where the surgeries happened so I think this is a room where a patient was waiting for recovery yeah it’s very warm in here oh my God it’s dark in here wow this is the elevator like don’t step in there because this is just going all the way down so that if you probably like put some force in there then this might fall all the way down this is the one that we saw from down as well here’s the rooftop wow I can just walk through the window can still get a bit higher by going on these ladders look from here you can even see a tower from the airport so there is an old military airport there and even this site in the 80s was used as a military site it’s really weird that they built this hospital here in the middle of this there’s just only forest around there was a church and a mosque inside this hospital and I think that this one here is the church wow maybe this one is the mosque then I think it’s underneath there watch out because this is the elevator on the top don’t go stand on that you can see all the way down into the shaft it’s not officially known but it’s supposed that this hospital closed because the amount of tuberculosis patients in the country decreased and these days more and more people have asked for the hospital to reopen because in this region that could be very well used and if not as a hospital then as a hotel to show the history this is like a double wall here wow this goes all the way down here did you hear any stories about this place online the legends and the facts blur some say the building is cursed others say it’s simply abandoned and neglected either way the weight of what it was lingers what does this say Satan we love Satan did you hear that uh huh this is the church he hath come to the bosom what? de la santé publique this was 3 October 1996 Bensmim 51,000 franc look there could have been a picture of a child here still 1956 huh what yeah me too so they also go to the mosque I think this leads to the basement oh yeah here’s the basement look here are all the mattresses laying from everyone too from all the people that died they just threw their mattress here there’s even like look underneath here you wanna go in there all the heating let’s see what’s here what is this you can look inside here these are like oh my God I know what this is this is probably the morgue like where they maybe this is where they would burn the bodies maybe not I don’t know because this feels like an oven it’s not that big Jonathan where did you learn anatomy this was a storage place when this hospital just closed there were so many people that came here to just steal the equipment and take it with them but these days there’s not much left you just find like broken toilet pots an old comb here someone left their shoe here yeah I wonder if there have ever been any accidents here or like any public investigations with disappearances or people that would live here and stay here illegally it’s very dark here wow look at all these decomposing mattresses from the people makes it feel that there was a lot of patients here wow I wonder what it was in all these boxes oh I see this I think this is like this look here’s bottles shine here don’t touch them just this might be maybe for like a chloroform or something or like medical alcohol that’s a lot of medicines I think this is a bed for children Aspirina so these are all orders from medicines and then someone’s autograph oh there’s still a bottle here that is just entirely full and it says it says here what is in there Chloride sodium oh you hang this upside down and then you can put like a the tubes on there to put in your veins what was that I saw a bat oh my god what oh my God it flew at my hair okay let’s walk because it’s flying in these are all the pillows from the people yeah this door is broken open what is this room oh my God Achraf oh my God oh my God let me just shine in there it’s like a tunnel or something where does this go I I don’t go deep I just go a bit hello Jonathan come shh shh shh shh what’s that sound Jonathan let’s go Jonathan let’s go let’s go the door just pushed on its own oh okay we can go back up there’s some very old bizarre paintings on the wall here what is this it’s like some uh surrealistic cubistic thing but these are like small clouds and then very big buildings it’s like Soviet blocks I think here was the back entrance but everything is now barricaded from this side so you cannot get in or get out I think the way out was there wow what is this maybe these are these hot baths yeah that could be maybe this door no this is all tight there’s also a door here it’s also locked maybe we can just get through these windows here oh no this also goes down here here was the exit it’s locked here we can exit again we just have to lift this up and then we can open the door what do you feel after going out relieved my God you don’t see that there’s all of that inside of this in the forest surrounding the hospital there’s also a lot of other abandoned buildings I think they also were maybe storage places or maybe uh places where doctors or nurses used to live I’m not sure but yes you can see not much of it is left what a lot of people also do not know is that right next to the hospital is a water source and they make water here that a lot of people in Morocco drink it’s from this brand we have a bottle of it it’s called ain ifrane and it says like this exact name from this province which is Ben smim and it says here just like source Ben smim which is actually the same name of the hospital it shows that this region still has some importance and I do think that they should really fix the hospital because right now it’s just left in decay and that’s very sad inshallah inshallah yeah the hospital stands as a Monument of forgotten hopes when a building designed to save lives is left to decay who cares for its stories in Morocco’s forest among the pines and the silence the past still visits and if you listen carefully you might just feel it one of the scariest forests I’ve ever been in goats that sound like the gates of hell being cold, crows god, where are we going to? Maleficent? no we used to some people still say that lions didn’t go extinct and they still live here yeah they went extinct because of the French but some people still say we saw some we have to pick a stick or a big rock yeah my stick looks very mystical oh my God that’s a jinn fucking hell I have tuberculosis after this really what the fuck is this is a deer this big? I can see why I don’t ask about your opinions or religion but about what you suffer from I’m running late fucking hell why did you do that shouldn’t this be burned? fucking hell it’s like five floors here there it says I k***ed him here there’s a lot of bird poop here that door is opening on it’s own see you know that in Islam when your heart hurts or like head tightens that means there’s a a presence this looks like a surgery more than a morgue there’s still a light that’s still intact I think this is where people would watch their loved ones getting operated and it’s so warm don’t do that what is this yeah, not only online but also in real life people have a lot to say about this place people usually think that people who come here never make it back because like they think that this place is haunted it’s like one of the most notorious places that are abandoned in morocco it says fuite d’eau le 23-3-62 like there’s been water leakage on 1962 I did there was a lot going on there maybe someone is living here because it smells like pee this is the mosque yeah for wudu some papers this is food, confiture biscuit Laabassi Ahmed I’m getting some very uncomfortable ringing in my ear did you know that ghosts can also pray and they also have different religions that they follow yes oh all these pipes came down no thank you look here it goes more down human bodies are not that small forbidden entry this room is full of boxes I saw a bat I don’t wanna go there what is that? maybe it’s a sewer system don’t say that it says here eating human m*** the phone died you know when you said hello when you were in that place the door it’s like someone banged it and there’s no wind there to make it seem like they were outside when they were sick maybe it’s maybe the cafeteria
