The Village Where Time Stood Still ❄️ | Grimentz, Switzerland 4K Walking Tour

The road to Grimentz was unfamiliar and a bit risky:) The forecast mentioned possible snowfall, and since the village is high up in the mountains, the road could easily get buried. I set off not really knowing what to expect. The drive there went fine, but on the way back the snowstorm hit visibility dropped to almost nothing, and I barely made it to the village of Täsch. Still, I don’t regret it for a second:) It was an unforgettable experience, and I managed to capture the magic of this charming alpine village. Welcome to Grimentz, Switzerland! Today we’re in for a cozy and picturesque walk through a winter village! Grimentz is a small mountain village located in the Val d’Anniviers valley, in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It sits at an elevation of about 1,570 meters (5,150 feet) above sea level. The village is home to around 400 residents. Grimentz is known for their traditional wooden chalets, peaceful alpine atmosphere, and beautiful snowy landscapes in winter. The first mention of Grimentz dates back to the 13th century. At that time, it was a small shepherds’ settlement, isolated high in the mountains – far from major towns and trade routes. People lived from farming, growing rye, keeping livestock, and making cheese. The village belonged to the church feudal lords of Sion, the capital of the canton of Valais, but it existed almost completely on its own. Because of the harsh alpine climate and long winters, the villagers lived for centuries with very little contact with the outside world. The houses were built from larch wood, which darkens beautifully over time to a deep chocolate color, that’s why the old center of the village now looks like an open-air museum. Many of these traditional wooden chalets date back to the 17th and 18th centuries and remain perfectly preserved. Every summer, residents decorate their balconies with red geraniums, a custom that continues today – in summer, the whole village bursts with color. And in winter, Grimentz transforms into a snowy fairytale! Narrow streets, snow-covered roofs, and absolute silence make it feel as if time has stopped. Do you like this place? One of Grimentz’s proudest traditions is its unique wine, Vin du Glacier – the “glacier wine.” It is made according to an ancient method in large wooden barrels stored in attics. Each year, new wine is added but never fully replaced — meaning that some barrels still contain traces of wine over a century old. This drink symbolizes the continuity and enduring spirit of the village. Despite its growing popularity among visitors, the village has managed to keep its authentic character. There are no chain stores, no billboards, no modern concrete buildings. In winter, it attracts those who love skiing and quiet snowy walks. In summer, travelers come to enjoy the pure alpine air, silence, and timeless beauty. Despite being part of wealthy Switzerland, Grimentz didn’t get electricity until the 1940s, and the first road accessible by car was built even later. Before that, the only way to reach the village was on foot or by mule. Grimentz is officially recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. In Grimentz, a strict architectural regulation is in place. New buildings must be constructed only from wood and stone to preserve the village’s historic appearance. Even the windows and roofs are required to match the original 17th-century style. We continue our walk through this historic village. Stay with me and enjoy the atmosphere and the beauty of these winter landscapes!

  2. Amazing how clean and well maintained everything is. If these people can take great care of their village in a cold climate, why is it third world countries do not?
