Freshest Seafood & Grilling Experience in Hachinohe, Aomori, JAPAN!
Konnichi- what’s up? Today, we are at Hasshoku Center located in Hachinone, Aomori. My family caught a taxi where we were dropped off at the rear exit. Today, I will be introducing you to Shichirin Mura, an eating facility that’s quite unique. As my family and I enter Hasshoku Center through the rear entrance, you’ll see a store that carries various alcoholic and Japanese liquors that are regional or popular. Further in, you’ll see the vast array of small store selling gifts and food items. At this stand, you’ll see a various Apple products, that Aomori is famous for. Now, we’re at the entrance of Shichirin Mura. In front of one of the entrances, there is a visitor guide written in English for you to follow the instructions and procedures of this eating establishment. Upon entering, the atmosphere is a little smokey, of course, because there is a lot of grilling going on. So, we line up at the register to pay and get our table seating. Looking around, you can see a lot of wooden tables. At the register, there is a sign displaying that this is a cash only business and you have a 2-hour time limit. This is the area you return your cups and trays. So, after we pay, we’re escorted by the staff to our seats located near the back entrance with the grill and items for cooking. It is 400 yen per adult, 150 yen for elementary students, while infants eat for free. Bringing in food not purchased at Hasshoku Center is strictly prohibited. Now that we are set, let’s go shopping for the foods that we want to cook at Shichirin Mura. You’ll need to purchase your actual food items separately so please be aware. Within Hasshoku Center, you will have a choice of variety of seafood including fish, shellfish, fish eggs, and you can even get some wagyu beef for cooking. Just remember to notify the stands that you’ll be eating at Shichirin Mura and they’ll help prepare your items for easier grilling. Hachinohe is well known for having one of the freshest and most variety of seafood. And it exports its items throughout Japan’s restaurants and markets for sale. Hasshoku Center’s seafood is sourced from both the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan, and it arrives straight from the boats docked in the nearby port. Unlike Tokyo’s Tsukiji market, the stores in Hasshoku Center operate all day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. But, please note that the market is closed on Wednesdays. Within Hasshoku Center, there are over 60 shops stocking freshly caught seafood, local fruits and vegetables along with other Aomori specialties. So, even if you’re not in the mood for cooking, you can also enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants located within Hasshoku Center. But for me, the chance to cook and eat fresh seafood and meats is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I’m sure that your mouth and stomach will highly appreciate it and never forget the experience. Here you see various types of fish eggs along with some pickled seafoods and even fresh uni in jars. Here are various types of sashimi, including tuna ahi, salmon, hamachi, amongst others. Can you believe how inexpensive it is? Here are some king crab legs, hairy crabs, shrimp, octopus, and this weird thing is called Hoya in Japanese also known as Sea Pineapple. Although it tastes nothing like a pineapple and has an unusual taste that I don’t really care for. Further down, we have some more varieties of fish, prawns, mussels, clams, and other shellfish. These are some pickled items or ‘tsukemono’ as they’re called in Japanese. This is the uni section where you can enjoy it in different ways and with various sauces. Next to that is various foods that are not meant for cooking but to enjoy together with your foods along with Aomori’s famous apple juice. Here’s some more sashimi that is not only fresh but very inexpensive compared to prices in Hawaii. So, we’re grilling the various seafood that we bought along with rice and sashimi that will also be eaten. Can you believe I was able to get fresh uni for only $3,200 yen or a little over $20? And some sushi, as well! After we finished, my kids and their Grandpa enjoyed ice cream.
