【歴史じっくり紀行】OSHIRO vol.88 雑賀埼城跡 和歌山県和歌山市にある雑賀孫一が築城したと伝わる城跡を訪れた!!【ゆっくり解説】【お城巡り】【日本観光】

Hello everyone. Welcome to OSHIRO. Today, we will be touring castles while taking a peek at historical stories. The castle we will be visiting this time is the ruins of Saikazaki Castle. There is no castle there now, but I think the history surrounding it is very interesting. Let’s go right away. Saikazaki Castle is the remains of a castle in Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture. A lighthouse currently stands there. This place is southwest of Saikazaki, and the cliffs of the cape jutting out into the sea are called “Hawk’s Nest”. The cliffs are 50m high, and crystalline schist known as Kishu blue stone is exposed on the coast. The name comes from the fact that hawks build their nests in the rocks of these cliffs. The builder of Saikazaki Castle was Magoichi Saika. Magoichi Saika was one of the leaders of the Saika clan. Let’s take a look at the background to Magoichi’s succession. Kishu. Present-day Wakayama Prefecture. During the Muromachi period, the Hatakeyama clan served as shugo daimyo. The Hatakeyama clan was one of the three kanrei that supported the Ashikaga shogunate. However, as the divisions and conflicts between the local people of Kishu intensified, the shugo Hatakeyama clan also fell into turmoil due to a struggle for succession. This was the Onin War. As seen in the struggle between the Shugo (Provincial Governor) Hatakeyama clan and the servant Yukawa clan, there were also movements by vassals and local lords to eliminate the Shugo. There were two powers in Kishu: Negoro-ji Temple and the Saika-shu. Negoro- ji Temple was formed when a sect of teachings that had arisen at Mt. Koya separated from Mt. Koya. The Shingi-ha sect, centered around Daidenpoin Temple, moved to Negoro, and the followers of the sect also moved there, and Negoro-ji Temple was established. It had a group of warrior monks. Missionaries observed them during the Sengoku period. Luis Frois points out that their main duty was to devote themselves to military training. The rules of the sect required them to make one arrow every day, and those who made one were considered to have accumulated merit. They wore silk kimonos, and because they had a large income, they walked around with two swords decorated with gold. They were skilled in military affairs, and it seems that they trained regularly, especially in bows and arrows and guns. Japanese warlords and feudal lords would hire these monks for money when they went to war. They would side with the side that offered them favorable terms. Their houses and temples were gorgeous, and pilgrims who visited the area were treated to free meals for two to three days. There were 8,000 to 10,000 warrior monks belonging to Negoro-ji. On the other hand, the Saika-shu were followers of Hongan-ji. Saika was located at the mouth of the Kino River, and many of its residents were followers of Hongan-ji. In addition to farming, they also engaged in water transportation. They seem to have owned armed ships. One of the leaders of the Saika-shu was Dobashi Wakatayu, and there was also a follower of Hongan-ji who was the head of a temple at Negoro-ji. When Oda Nobunaga fought against Ishiyama Hongan-ji , Negoro-ji initially sided with the Oda clan, but eventually joined forces with the Saika-shu. The builder of Saikazaki Castle was a man named Suzuki Magoichi. It is believed that Saikazaki Castle was abandoned in 1585 after Toyotomi Hideyoshi conquered Kishu. There are several people who are said to be Saika Magoichi. They are Suzuki Shigehide, Suzuki Shigeoki, Suzuki Yoshikane, Suzuki Magoichiro, and Suzuki Shigetomo. Magoichi seems to be a name that was passed down. In the Ishiyama Battle, where the Oda clan and Ishiyama Honganji confronted each other, Suzuki Shigehide was the “Suzuki Magoichi” who sided with Honganji and was called “the left and right generals of Osaka.” In the petition for the Ishiyama Battle, there is a federation of four senior retainers of the Saika Ikko sect and seven members of the Saika clan, and Suzuki Magoichi is one of the seven members. He is sometimes called the head of the Saika clan, but he was not the leader who controlled the entire Saika clan, and the Saika clan itself does not seem to have been a controlled organization. Suzuki Shigehide was active in various places. In the Battle of Ishiyama, he opposed Nobunaga with 5,000 guns. He was praised as “the general of Osaka’s left and right sides” along with Shimotsuma Yorichika. He was active everywhere, such as going to Harima Province to arrange for supplies for the Mori army to Hongan-ji Temple, and relieving Araki Murashige, who had rebelled against Nobunaga, at Arioka Castle. In the Battle of Ishiyama, Negoro-ji Temple and the Saika-shu joined forces to resist Nobunaga. However, the Saika-shu split internally. There was a faction led by Hongan-ji Kennyo and another led by his son, Hongan-ji Kyonyo. Kyonyo fought against Oda Nobunaga with his father, Kennyo, in the Battle of Ishiyama (1570-1580), but while Kennyo was in favor of peace with the Oda clan, Kyonyo advocated a fight to the end. As a result, he was disowned by Kennyo and his position within the religious organization became unstable. He was then pursued by Nobunaga. At that time, Kyonyo changed his name to “Yamagami Gendayu” and fled from place to place disguised as a ronin, hiding in Takanosu in Saikazaki. Eventually, he joined the Kennyo faction. Saika Magoichi played an active role as the main force of Hongan-ji Temple, but after the peace treaty, he seems to have approached Nobunaga. There is a natural cave called “Kyonyo Cave” under “Takanosu”, where Saikazaki Castle is located. In 1580 (Tensho 8), Kyonyo, the 12th head priest of Hongan-ji Temple, who was defeated in the Ishiyama Battle with Oda Nobunaga and fled from Ishiyama Hongan-ji Temple in Osaka to Saginomori in Kishu, escaped by boat from Wakaura and hid in this cave to avoid danger. It is said that Kyonyo hid for about 10 days to escape the pursuit of Oda Nobunaga. It is designated as a natural monument of Wakayama Prefecture. Currently, traffic is blocked and it is not possible to enter the cave where Kyonyo hid. There was a path leading to the cave at the ruins of Saikazaki Castle, which I visited this time. It seems that Kyonyo Shonin, who was pursued by Nobunaga, was hidden in this castle for about 10 days. This is a story from the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute in 1584. Many of the Kishu forces, including the Negoro and Saika sects, joined forces with Oda Nobukatsu and Tokugawa Ieyasu and dispatched troops to Izumi. At Komaki and Nagakute, Hideyoshi marched to Inuyama in Aichi Prefecture. He confronted Tokugawa Ieyasu, whose main camp was at Komakiyama. One of his subordinates pointed out that Ieyasu’s home province of Mikawa was completely deserted, and proposed a strategy called “nakairi” (intermediate attack). This was a plan to surprise attack the deserted home province. Hideyoshi appointed his nephew, Hashiba Hidetsugu, as the supreme commander, but Ieyasu noticed and the “nakairi” failed. To turn the tide of the battle in Ieyasu’s favor, Hashiba Hideyoshi attacked Kishu and Ise, the home province of Oda Nobukatsu. While many of the Kishu forces allied with Oda Nobukatsu and Tokugawa Ieyasu and sent troops to Izumi, Suzuki Shigehide sided with Hideyoshi. As mentioned above, the builder of Saikasaki Castle was Suzuki Magoichi. It is believed that Saikasaki Castle was abandoned after Toyotomi Hideyoshi conquered Kishu in 1585.
