Start from Guillaumes (≈800 m / 2,625 ft) Alpine village in the upper Var valley, starting point of the climb toward the mountains. Route des Grandes Alpes – We follow the famous tourist road created in the early 1900s to cross all the French Alps on panoramic passes. Villeneuve-d’Entraunes – Small mountain hamlet in the upper Var valley, transition area between inhabited zones and high mountain. Saint-Martin-d’Entraunes Rural alpine area, approaching the National Park of Mercantour and leaving the denser settlements behind. Tunnel – Short rock tunnel protecting the road from falling rocks and winter conditions on this narrow mountain road. Entraunes Last real village before high altitude. From here we get closer to the Var’s sources and the landscape opens. Another protected section carved into the rock, typical of high mountain roads in the southern French Alps. Estenc – High valley area with larches and alpine meadows, perfect for autumn colors and the first feeling of altitude. Mercantour National Park – Refuge de la Cantonnière – Entrance to the protected area of National Park OF Mercantour The Mercantour National Park is one of France’s most biodiverse mountain areas, sitting between the Alps and the Mediterranean. It was created in 1979 to protect high-altitude valleys, larch forests, and wildlife like chamois, ibex, and even wolves which naturally returned here in the 1990 Final tunnel before the last hairpins leading to the pass. That dude was in a rush 🏍 Thanks for the great autumn drive, beautiful colors! This road is definitely worth driving. Love to go there someday. From what it seems, it was too cold for cyclists. And the road of course is not really cycle friendly at the higher altitude sections.
